    Understanding the IKEA Warehouse Processes and Modeling using Modular Petri Nets

    Nowadays, large warehouses handle a huge number of products. Handling the enormity and different types of (range) products also demand complex warehouse processes. In this paper, the IKEA warehouse in Stavanger, Norway, is taken as an example, which stores, manages, and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances and home accessories. The focus of this paper is to understand the warehouse processes that make the warehouse popular with the customers. Petri net is used to model the processes, and by simulation, the effect of the processes are understood. This paper shows how the processes integrate the large range of products, customer service, and the supply chain. The logistics flow is represented with a modular Petri Net model using the tool known as the General-purpose Petri Net Simulator (GPenSim).     An approach to open virtual commissioning for component-based automation

    Increasing market demands for highly customised products with shorter time-to-market and at lower prices are forcing manufacturing systems to be built and operated in a more efficient ways. In order to overcome some of the limitations in traditional methods of automation system engineering, this thesis focuses on the creation of a new approach to Virtual Commissioning (VC). In current VC approaches, virtual models are driven by pre-programmed PLC control software. These approaches are still time-consuming and heavily control expertise-reliant as the required programming and debugging activities are mainly performed by control engineers. Another current limitation is that virtual models validated during VC are difficult to reuse due to a lack of tool-independent data models. Therefore, in order to maximise the potential of VC, there is a need for new VC approaches and tools to address these limitations. The main contributions of this research are: (1) to develop a new approach and the related engineering tool functionality for directly deploying PLC control software based on component-based VC models and reusable components; and (2) to build tool-independent common data models for describing component-based virtual automation systems in order to enable data reusability.     Backpack Journalism in Television Newsgathering: Audience Perceptions of Quality

    The purpose of this study was to explore preferences by younger news audiences of backpack journalism in local television news. Local television news has to compete with Internet and other media to attract viewers. The theoretical foundation for this study, uses and gratifications, proposes audience members will actively seek news information using television as a primary source. The focus of the study centered around technology’s influence on television newsgathering techniques and if the techniques delineated the quality of journalistic presentation. Four hundred and ninety three college students were surveyed about their media use, news gratification, and preferences of production quality criteria associated with news stories produced by traditional two person crews and backpack journalists. Respondents were shown eight randomly selected videotaped news stories from a television market that employed both traditional two person news crews and backpack journalists. Four stories were chosen by each newsgathering method. Each news story was judged on perceptions of pacing, camera composition, lighting, voice narration, interviews selected, and script production. Findings suggested that younger audience members indicated a preference toward newsgathering methods by traditional news crews rather than backpack journalists. Anecdotal evidence suggests a shift in the newsgathering paradigm is currently taking place in the local television news. However, the results of this study propose the audience acceptance of this newsgathering technique is slow to be accepted by the younger news audience

    A methodology for the distributed and collaborative management of engineering knowledge

    The problems of collaborative engineering design and management at the conceptual stage in a large network of dissimilar enterprises was investigated. This issue in engineering design is a result of the supply chain and virtual enterprise (VE) oriented industry that demands faster time to market and accurate cost/manufacturing analysis from conception. Current tools and techniques do not completely fulfil this requirement due to a lack of coherent inter-enterprise collaboration and a dearth of manufacturing knowledge available at the concept stage. Client-server and peer to peer systems were tested for communication, as well as various techniques for knowledge management and propagation including Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and expert systems. As a result of system testing, and extensive literature review, several novel techniques were proposed and tested to improve the coherent management of knowledge and enable inter-enterprise collaboration. The techniques were trialled on two engineering project examples. An automotive Tier-1 supplier which designs products whose components are sub­contracted to a large supply chain and assembled for an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) was used as a test scenario. The utility of the systems for integrating large VEs into a coherent project with unified specifications were demonstrated in a simple example, and problems associated with engineering document management overcome via re-usable, configurable, object oriented ontologies propagated throughout the VE imposing a coherent nomenclature and engineering product definition. All knowledge within the system maintains links from specification - concept - design - testing through to manufacturing stages, aiding the participating enterprises in maintaining their knowledge and experience for future projects. This potentially speeds the process of innovation by enabling companies to concentrate on value-added aspects of designs whilst ‘bread-and-butter’ expertise is reused. The second example, a manufacturer of rapid-construction steel bridges, demonstrated the manufacturing dimension of the methodology, where the early stage of design, and the generation of new concepts by reusing existing manufacturing knowledge bases was demonstrated. The solution consisted of a de-centralised super-peer net architecture to establish and maintain communications between enterprises in a VE. The enterprises are able to share knowledge in a common format and nomenclature via the building-block shareable super-ontology that can be tailored on a project by project basis, whilst maintaining the common nomenclature of the ‘super-ontology’ eliminating knowledge interpretation issues. The two-tier architecture developed as part of the solution glues together the peer-peer and super-ontologies to form a coherent system for internal knowledge management and product development as well as external virtual enterprise product development and knowledge management. In conclusion, the methodology developed for collaboration and knowledge management was shown to be more appropriate for use by smaller enterprises collaborating in a large Virtual Enterprise than PLM technology in terms of: usability, configurability, cost of system and individual control over intellectual property rights

    Milliseconds matters, when they’re counted. If we consider the life of the universe into one single year, then on 31 December at 11:59:59.5 PM, “speed” was transportation’s concern, and now after 500 milliseconds it is web’s, and no one knows whose concern it would be in coming milliseconds, but at this very moment; this thesis proposes an optimization method, mainly for content delivery on slow connections. The method utilizes a proxy as a middle box to fetch the content; requested by a client, from a single or multiple web servers, and bundles all of the fetched image content types that fits into the bundling policy; inside a JavaScript file in Base64 format. This optimization method reduces the number of HTTP requests between the client and multiple web servers as a result of its proposed bundling solution, and at the same time optimizes the HTTP compression efficiency as a result of its proposed method of aggregative textual content compression. Page loading time results of the test web pages; which were specially designed and developed to capture the optimum benefits of the proposed method; proved up to 81% faster page loading time for all connection types. However, other tests in non-optimal situations such as webpages which use “Lazy Loading” techniques, showed just 35% to 50% benefits, that is only achievable on 2G and 3G connections (0.2 Mbps – 15 Mbps downlink) and not faster connections

    A critical literature review of security and privacy in smart home healthcare schemes adopting IoT & blockchain: problems, challenges and solutions

    Protecting private data in smart homes, a popular Internet-of-Things (IoT) application, remains a significant data security and privacy challenge due to the large-scale development and distributed nature of IoT networks. Recently, smart healthcare has leveraged smart home systems, thereby compounding security concerns in terms of the confidentiality of sensitive and private data and by extension the privacy of the data owner. However, PoA-based Blockchain DLT has emerged as a promising solution for protecting private data from indiscriminate use and thereby preserving the privacy of individuals residing in IoT-enabled smart homes. This review elicits some concerns, issues, and problems that have hindered the adoption of blockchain and IoT (BCoT) in some domains and suggests requisite solutions using the aging-in-place scenario. Implementation issues with BCoT were examined as well as the combined challenges BCoT can pose when utilised for security gains. The study discusses recent findings, opportunities, and barriers, and provide recommendations that could facilitate the continuous growth of blockchain application in healthcare. Lastly, the study then explored the potential of using a PoA-based permission blockchain with an applicable consent-based privacy model for decision-making in the information disclosure process, including the use of publisher-subscriber contracts for fine-grained access control to ensure secure data processing and sharing, as well as ethical trust in personal information disclosure, as a solution direction. The proposed authorisation framework could guarantee data ownership, conditional access management, scalable and tamper-proof data storage, and a more resilient system against threat models such as interception and insider attacks
