    Robust P2P Live Streaming

Aware of this, we are developing a project named Trilogy leaded by the i2CAT Foundation, which has as main pillar the study, development and evaluation of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Live streaming architectures for the distribution of high-quality media contents. In this context, this work concretely covers media coding aspects and proposes the use of Multiple Description Coding (MDC) as a flexible solution for providing robust and scalable live streaming over P2P networks. This work describes current state of the art in media coding techniques and P2P streaming architectures, presents the implemented prototype as well as its simulation and validation results

    Video-on-Demand over Internet: a survey of existing systems and solutions

    Video-on-Demand is a service where movies are delivered to distributed users with low delay and free interactivity. The traditional client/server architecture experiences scalability issues to provide video streaming services, so there have been many proposals of systems, mostly based on a peer-to-peer or on a hybrid server/peer-to-peer solution, to solve this issue. This work presents a survey of the currently existing or proposed systems and solutions, based upon a subset of representative systems, and defines selection criteria allowing to classify these systems. These criteria are based on common questions such as, for example, is it video-on-demand or live streaming, is the architecture based on content delivery network, peer-to-peer or both, is the delivery overlay tree-based or mesh-based, is the system push-based or pull-based, single-stream or multi-streams, does it use data coding, and how do the clients choose their peers. Representative systems are briefly described to give a summarized overview of the proposed solutions, and four ones are analyzed in details.     Unbalanced Quantized Multi-State Video Coding

    Multi-State Video Coding (MSVC) is a multiple description scheme based on frame-wise splitting of the video sequence into two or more subsequences. Each subsequence is encoded separately to generate descriptions which can be decoded independently. Due to subsequence splitting the prediction gain decreases. but since reconstruction capabilities improves, error resilience of the system increases. Our focus is on Multi-State Video Coding with unbalanced quantized descriptions, which is particularly interesting for video streaming applications over heterogeneous networks where path diversity is used and transmission channels have varying transmission characteristics. The total bitrate is kept constant while the subsequences are quantized with different step sizes depending on the sequence as well as on the transmission conditions. Our goal is to figure out under which transmission conditions unbalanced bitstreams lead to good system performance in terms of the average reconstructed PSNR. Besides, we investigate the effects of intra-coding on the error resilience of the system and show that the sequence characteristics, and in particular the degree of motion in the sequence, have an important impact on the decoding performance. Finally, we propose a distortion model that is the core of an optimized rate allocation strategy, which is dependent on the network characteristics and status as well as on the video sequence characteristics

    A Survey of multimedia streaming in wireless sensor networks: progress, issues and design challenges

    Advancements in Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology have enabled Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to gather, process and transport multimedia (MM) data as well and not just limited to handling ordinary scalar data anymore. This new generation of WSN type is called Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs). Better and yet relatively cheaper sensors that are able to sense both scalar data and multimedia data with more advanced functionalities such as being able to handle rather intense computations easily have sprung up. In this paper, the applications, architectures, challenges and issues faced in the design of WMSNs are explored. Security and privacy issues, over all requirements, proposed and implemented solutions so far, some of the successful achievements and other related works in the field are also highlighted. Open research areas are pointed out and a few solution suggestions to the still persistent problems are made, which, to the best of my knowledge, so far have not been explored yet

    Multiple description image and video coding for P2P transmissions

    Peer-to-Peer (P2P) media streaming is, nowadays, a very attractive topic due to the bandwidth available to serve demanding content scales. A key challenge, however, is making content distribution robust to peer transience. Multiple description coding (MDC) has, indeed, proven to be very effective with problems concerning the packets’ losses, since it generates several descriptions and may reconstruct the original information with any number of descriptions that may reach the decoder. Therefore multiple descriptions may be effective for robust peer-to-peer media streaming. In this dissertation, it will not only be showed that, but also that varying the redundancy level of description on the fly may lead to a better performance than the one obtained without varying this parameter. Besides that, it is shown, as well, that varying the Bitrate on the fly outperforms the redundancy on it. Furthermore, the redundancy and the Bitrate were varied simultaneously. Thus, it is shown that this variation is more efficient when the packet loss is high. The experiments reported above were done using an experimental test bed developed for this purpose at the NMCG lab of the University of Beira Interior. It was also used the REGPROT, a video encoder developed by our research team, to splitted the video into multiple descriptions, which were, later, distributed among the peers in the test bed.     Graded quantization for multiple description coding of compressive measurements

    Compressed sensing (CS) is an emerging paradigm for acquisition of compressed representations of a sparse signal. Its low complexity is appealing for resource-constrained scenarios like sensor networks. However, such scenarios are often coupled with unreliable communication channels and providing robust transmission of the acquired data to a receiver is an issue. Multiple description coding (MDC) effectively combats channel losses for systems without feedback, thus raising the interest in developing MDC methods explicitly designed for the CS framework, and exploiting its properties. We propose a method called Graded Quantization (CS-GQ) that leverages the democratic property of compressive measurements to effectively implement MDC, and we provide methods to optimize its performance. A novel decoding algorithm based on the alternating directions method of multipliers is derived to reconstruct signals from a limited number of received descriptions. Simulations are performed to assess the performance of CS-GQ against other methods in presence of packet losses. The proposed method is successful at providing robust coding of CS measurements and outperforms other schemes for the considered test metrics

    Scalable Multiple Description Coding and Distributed Video Streaming over 3G Mobile Networks

    In this thesis, a novel Scalable Multiple Description Coding (SMDC) framework is proposed. To address the bandwidth fluctuation, packet loss and heterogeneity problems in the wireless networks and further enhance the error resilience tools in Moving Pictures Experts Group 4 (MPEG-4), the joint design of layered coding (LC) and multiple description coding (MDC) is explored. It leverages a proposed distributed multimedia delivery mobile network (D-MDMN) to provide path diversity to combat streaming video outage due to handoff in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The corresponding intra-RAN (Radio Access Network) handoff and inter-RAN handoff procedures in D-MDMN are studied in details, which employ the principle of video stream re-establishing to replace the principle of data forwarding in UMTS. Furthermore, a new IP (Internet Protocol) Differentiated Services (DiffServ) video marking algorithm is proposed to support the unequal error protection (UEP) of LC components of SMDC. Performance evaluation is carried through simulation using OPNET Modeler 9. 0. Simulation results show that the proposed handoff procedures in D-MDMN have better performance in terms of handoff latency, end-to-end delay and handoff scalability than that in UMTS. Performance evaluation of our proposed IP DiffServ video marking algorithm is also undertaken, which shows that it is more suitable for video streaming in IP mobile networks compared with the previously proposed DiffServ video marking algorithm (DVMA)
