    Multimedia Correlation Analysis in Unstructured Peer-to-Peer Network

    Recent years saw the rapid development of peer-topeer (P2P) networks in a great variety of applications. However, similarity-based k-nearest-neighbor retrieval (k-NN) is still a challenging task in P2P networks due to the multiple constraints such as the dynamic topologies and the unpredictable data updates. Caching is an attractive solution that reduces network traffic and hence could remedy the technological constraints of P2P networks. However, traditional caching techniques have some major shortcomings that make them unsuitable for similarity search, such as the lack of semantic locality representation and the rigidness of exact matching on data objects. To facilitate the efficient similarity search, we propose semantic-aware caching scheme (SAC) in this paper. The proposed scheme is hierarchy-free, fully dynamic, non-flooding, and do not add much system overhead. By exploring the content distribution, SAC drastically reduces the cost of similarity-based k-NN retrieval in P2P networks. The performance of SAC is evaluated through simulation study and compared against several search schemes as advanced in the literature

    Nomadic fog storage

    Mobile services incrementally demand for further processing and storage. However, mobile devices are known for their constrains in terms of processing, storage, and energy. Early proposals have addressed these aspects; by having mobile devices access remote clouds. But these proposals suffer from long latencies and backhaul bandwidth limitations in retrieving data. To mitigate these issues, edge clouds have been proposed. Using this paradigm, intermediate nodes are placed between the mobile devices and the remote cloud. These intermediate nodes should fulfill the end users’ resource requests, namely data and processing capability, and reduce the energy consumption on the mobile devices’ batteries. But then again, mobile traffic demand is increasing exponentially and there is a greater than ever evolution of mobile device’s available resources. This urges the use of mobile nodes’ extra capabilities for fulfilling the requisites imposed by new mobile applications. In this new scenario, the mobile devices should become both consumers and providers of the emerging services. The current work researches on this possibility by designing, implementing and testing a novel nomadic fog storage system that uses fog and mobile nodes to support the upcoming applications. In addition, a novel resource allocation algorithm has been developed that considers the available energy on mobile devices and the network topology. It also includes a replica management module based on data popularity. The comprehensive evaluation of the fog proposal has evidenced that it is responsive, offloads traffic from the backhaul links, and enables a fair energy depletion among mobiles nodes by storing content in neighbor nodes with higher battery autonomy.Os serviços móveis requerem cada vez mais poder de processamento e armazenamento. Contudo, os dispositivos móveis são conhecidos por serem limitados em termos de armazenamento, processamento e energia. Como solução, os dispositivos móveis começaram a aceder a estes recursos através de nuvens distantes. No entanto, estas sofrem de longas latências e limitações na largura de banda da rede, ao aceder aos recursos. Para resolver estas questões, foram propostas soluções de edge computing. Estas, colocam nós intermediários entre os dispositivos móveis e a nuvem remota, que são responsáveis por responder aos pedidos de recursos por parte dos utilizadores finais. Dados os avanços na tecnologia dos dispositivos móveis e o aumento da sua utilização, torna-se cada mais pertinente a utilização destes próprios dispositivos para fornecer os serviços da nuvem. Desta forma, o dispositivo móvel torna-se consumidor e fornecedor do serviço nuvem. O trabalho atual investiga esta vertente, implementado e testando um sistema que utiliza dispositivos móveis e nós no “fog”, para suportar os serviços móveis emergentes. Foi ainda implementado um algoritmo de alocação de recursos que considera os níveis de energia e a topologia da rede, bem como um módulo que gere a replicação de dados no sistema de acordo com a sua popularidade. Os resultados obtidos provam que o sistema é responsivo, alivia o tráfego nas ligações no core, e demonstra uma distribuição justa do consumo de energia no sistema através de uma disseminação eficaz de conteúdo nos nós da periferia da rede mais próximos dos nós consumidores

    Structured Peer-to-Peer Overlay Deployment on MANET: A Survey

    There are many common characteristics between Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks and Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET). Self-organization, decentralization, dynamicity and changing topology are the most shared features. Furthermore, when used together, the two approaches complement each other. P2P overlays provide data storage/retrieval functionality, and their routing information can complement that of MANET. MANET provides wireless connectivity between clients without depending on any pre-existing infrastructure. The aim of this paper is to survey current P2P over MANET systems. Specifically, this paper focuses on and investigates structured P2P over MANET. Overall, more than thirty distinct approaches have been classified into groups and introduced in tables providing a structured overview of the area. The survey addresses the identified approaches in terms of P2P systems, MANET underlay systems and the performance of the reviewed systems

First, it gives more insight into traditional Content Distribution Networks (CDN), their requirements and open issues. Second, it discusses Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems as a cheap and scalable alternative for CDN and extracts their design challenges. Finally, it evaluates the existing P2P systems dedicated for content distribution according to the identied requirements and challenges

    Quantitative evaluation of atlas-based highdensity diffuse optical tomography for imaging of the human visual cortex

    Image recovery in diffuse optical tomography (DOT) of the human brain often relies on accurate models of light propagation within the head. In the absence of subject specific models for image reconstruction, the use of atlas based models are showing strong promise. Although there exists some understanding in the use of some limited rigid model registrations in DOT, there has been a lack of a detailed analysis between errors in geometrical accuracy, light propagation in tissue and subsequent errors in dynamic imaging of recovered focal activations in the brain. In this work 11 different rigid registration algorithms, across 24 simulated subjects, are evaluated for DOT studies in the visual cortex. Although there exists a strong correlation (R(2) = 0.97) between geometrical surface error and internal light propagation errors, the overall variation is minimal when analysing recovered focal activations in the visual cortex. While a subject specific mesh gives the best results with a 1.2 mm average location error, no single algorithm provides errors greater than 4.5 mm. This work demonstrates that the use of rigid algorithms for atlas based imaging is a promising route when subject specific models are not available

The set of these measurement-based techniques composes the Internet Measurements area of research. This overview paper covers the Internet Measurements area by presenting measurement-based tools and methods that directly influence other conventional areas, such as network design and planning, traffic engineering, quality of service, and network management

    Enabling Large-Scale Peer-to-Peer Stored Video Streaming Service with QoS Support

    This research aims to enable a large-scale, high-volume, peer-to-peer, stored-video streaming service over the Internet, such as on-line DVD rentals. P2P allows a group of dynamically organized users to cooperatively support content discovery and distribution services without needing to employ a central server. P2P has the potential to overcome the scalability issue associated with client-server based video distribution networks; however, it brings a new set of challenges. This research addresses the following five technical challenges associated with the distribution of streaming video over the P2P network: 1) allow users with limited transmit bandwidth capacity to become contributing sources, 2) support the advertisement and discovery of time-changing and time-bounded video frame availability, 3) Minimize the impact of distribution source losses during video playback, 4) incorporate user mobility information in the selection of distribution sources, and 5) design a streaming network architecture that enables above functionalities.To meet the above requirements, we propose a video distribution network model based on a hybrid architecture between client-server and P2P. In this model, a video is divided into a sequence of small segments and each user executes a scheduling algorithm to determine the order, the timing, and the rate of segment retrievals from other users. The model also employs an advertisement and discovery scheme which incorporates parameters of the scheduling algorithm to allow users to share their life-time of video segment availability information in one advertisement and one query. An accompanying QoS scheme allows reduction in the number of video playback interruptions while one or more distribution sources depart from the service prematurely.The simulation study shows that the proposed model and associated schemes greatly alleviate the bandwidth requirement of the video distribution server, especially when the number of participating users grows large. As much as 90% of load reduction was observed in some experiments when compared to a traditional client-server based video distribution service. A significant reduction is also observed in the number of video presentation interruptions when the proposed QoS scheme is incorporated in the distribution process while certain percentages of distribution sources depart from the service unexpectedly
