    Properties of M31. II: A Cepheid disk sample derived from the first year of PS1 PAndromeda data

    We present a sample of Cepheid variable stars towards M31 based on the first year of regular M31 observations of the PS1 survey in the r_P1 and i_P1 filters. We describe the selection procedure for Cepheid variable stars from the overall variable source sample and develop an automatic classification scheme using Fourier decomposition and the location of the instability strip. We find 1440 fundamental mode (classical \delta) Cep stars, 126 Cepheids in the first overtone mode, and 147 belonging to the Population II types. 296 Cepheids could not be assigned to one of these classes and 354 Cepheids were found in other surveys. These 2009 Cepheids constitute the largest Cepheid sample in M31 known so far and the full catalog is presented in this paper. We briefly describe the properties of our sample in its spatial distribution throughout the M31 galaxy, in its age properties, and we derive an apparent period-luminosity relation (PLR) in our two bands. The Population I Cepheids nicely follow the dust pattern of the M31 disk, whereas the 147 Type II Cepheids are distributed throughout the halo of M31. We outline the time evolution of the star formation in the major ring found previously and find an age gradient. A comparison of our PLR to previous results indicates a curvature term in the PLR

    Non-linear Min protein interactions generate harmonics that signal mid-cell division in Escherichia coli

The Min protein system creates a dynamic spatial pattern in Escherichia coli cells where the proteins MinD and MinE oscillate from pole to pole. MinD positions MinC, an inhibitor of FtsZ ring formation, contributing to the mid-cell localization of cell division. In this paper, Fourier analysis is used to decompose experimental and model MinD spatial distributions into time-dependent harmonic components. In both experiment and model, the second harmonic component is responsible for producing a mid-cell minimum in MinD concentration. The features of this harmonic are robust in both experiment and model. Fourier analysis reveals a close correspondence between the time-dependent behaviour of the harmonic components in the experimental data and model. Given this, each molecular species in the model was analysed individually. This analysis revealed that membrane-bound MinD dimer shows the mid-cell minimum with the highest contrast when averaged over time, carrying the strongest signal for positioning the cell division ring. This concurs with previous data showing that the MinD dimer binds to MinC inhibiting FtsZ ring formation. These results show that non-linear interactions of Min proteins are essential for producing the mid-cell positioning signal via the generation of second-order harmonic components in the time-dependent spatial protein distribution

    Regulators of Bacterial Cell Division: Investigations of Min Oscillation and FtsA Activity

    Cytokinesis is a fundamental process that is essential for bacterial proliferation. The cytokinetic machinery in bacteria is termed the “divisome”. The divisome is a complex of proteins that forms a ring at midcell over dividing nucleoids. In order for daughter cells to form, the divisome must constrict. As constriction occurs, two new cell poles are formed, one for each daughter cell. The first step in divisome formation is the assembly of FtsZ into a Z ring. The work presented in this dissertation focuses on two proteins that regulate the Z ring: MinD, which is a part of the Min system and important for positioning of the divisome; and FtsA, involved in early and late stages of divisome formation with a speculated role in regulating its constriction and disassembly. In E. coli the Min proteins oscillate from pole-to-pole to prevent Z ring formation at the cell poles. I found that MinD oscillation becomes irregular as cell length increases, and that it starts to pause frequently at each side of the developing septum. Eventually this irregular pattern switches to a doubled, regular pattern that is maintained in newly born daughter cells. I suggest this may be the mechanism by which Min proteins are equally distributed in daughter cells. My studies of FtsA show that ATP binding is important for its function in vivo, affecting its ability to interact with FtsZ and possibly with itself and other division proteins. I also show for the first time that E. coli FtsA can hydrolyze ATP

    Distributed allocation of mobile sensing swarms in gyre flows

    We address the synthesis of distributed control policies to enable a swarm of homogeneous mobile sensors to maintain a desired spatial distribution in a geophysical flow environment, or workspace. In this article, we assume the mobile sensors (or robots) have a "map" of the environment denoting the locations of the Lagrangian coherent structures or LCS boundaries. Based on this information, we design agent-level hybrid control policies that leverage the surrounding fluid dynamics and inherent environmental noise to enable the team to maintain a desired distribution in the workspace. We establish the stability properties of the ensemble dynamics of the distributed control policies. Since realistic quasi-geostrophic ocean models predict double-gyre flow solutions, we use a wind-driven multi-gyre flow model to verify the feasibility of the proposed distributed control strategy and compare the proposed control strategy with a baseline deterministic allocation strategy. Lastly, we validate the control strategy using actual flow data obtained by our coherent structure experimental testbed.Comment: 10 pages, 14 Figures, added reference

This paper considers pattern formation and reconfigurability in a multi-robot system using bifurcating potential fields. It is shown how various patterns can be achieved through a simple free parameter change. In addition the stability of the system of robots is proven to ensure that desired behaviours always occur

    Verifiable control of a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles

    This article considers the distributed control of a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) investigating autonomous pattern formation and reconfigurability. A behaviour-based approach to formation control is considered with a velocity field control algorithm developed through bifurcating potential fields. This new approach extends previous research into pattern formation using potential field theory by considering the use of bifurcation theory as a means of reconfiguring a swarm pattern through a free parameter change. The advantage of this kind of system is that it is extremely robust to individual failures, is scalpable, and also flexible. The potential field consists of a steering and repulsive term with the bifurcation of the steering potential resulting in a change of the swarm pattern. The repulsive potential ensures collision avoidance and an equally spaced final formation. The stability of the system is demonstrated to ensure that desired behaviours always occur, assuming that at large separation distances the repulsive potential can be neglected through a scale separation that exists between the steering and repulsive potential. The control laws developed are applied to a formation of ten UAVs using a velocity field tracking approach, where it is shown numerically that desired patterns can be formed safely ensuring collision avoidance

    The Shape and Figure Rotation of NGC 2915's Dark Halo

    NGC 2915 is a blue compact dwarf galaxy with a very extended HI disk showing a short central bar and extended spiral arms, both reaching far beyond the optical component. We use Tremaine & Weinberg (1984) method to measure the pattern speed of the bar from HI radio synthesis data. Our measurements yield a pattern speed of 0.21+/-0.06 km/s/arcsec (8.0+/-2.4 km/s/kpc for D=5.3 Mpc), in disagreement with the general view that corotation in barred disks lies just outside the end of the bar, but consistent with recent models of barred galaxies with dense dark matter halos. Our adopted bar semi-length puts corotation at more than 1.7 bar radii. The existence of the pattern is also problematic. Because NGC 2915 is isolated, interactions cannot account for the structure observed in the HI disk. We also demonstrate that the low observed disk surface density and the location of the pseudo-rings make it unlikely that swing amplification or bar-driven spiral arms could explain the bar and spiral pattern. Based on the similarity of the dark matter and HI surface density profiles, we discuss the possibility of dark matter distributed in a disk and following closely the HI distribution. The disk then becomes unstable and can naturally form a bar and spiral pattern. However, this explanation is hard to reconcile with some properties of NGC 2915. We also consider the effect of a massive and extended triaxial dark matter halo with a rotating figure. The existence of such halos is supported by CDM simulations showing strongly triaxial dark halos with slow figure rotation. The observed structure of the HI disk can then arise through forcing by the rotating triaxial figure. We associate the measured pattern speed in NGC 2915 with the figure rotation of its dark halo.Comment: 37 pages, including 8 figures and 2 tables (AASTeX, aaspp4.sty). Fig.1 and 2 available as jpg.     A Reaction Diffusion Model Of Pattern Formation In Clustering Of Adatoms On Silicon Surfaces

    We study a reaction diffusion model which describes the formation of patterns on surfaces having defects. Through this model, the primary goal is to study the growth process of Ge on Si surface. We consider a two species reaction diffusion process where the reacting species are assumed to diffuse on the two dimensional surface with first order interconversion reaction occuring at various defect sites which we call reaction centers. Two models of defects, namely a ring defect and a point defect are considered separately. As reaction centers are assumed to be strongly localized in space, the proposed reaction-diffusion model is found to be exactly solvable. We use Green's function method to study the dynamics of reaction diffusion processes. Further we explore this model through Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to study the growth processes in the presence of a large number of defects.     Pattern transition in spacecraft formation flying via the artificial potential field method and bifurcation theory

    In recent years many new and exciting space concepts have developed around spacecraft formation flying. This form of distributed system has the advantages of being extremely flexible and robust. This paper considers the development of new control methodologies based on the artificial potential function method and extends previous research in this area by considering bifurcation theory as a means of controlling the transition between different formations. For real, safety critical applications it is important to prove the stability of the system. This paper therefore aims to replace algorithm validation with mathematical proof through dynamical systems theory. Finally we consider the transition of formations at the Sun-Earth L2 point
