A universal space-time architecture for multiple-antenna aided systems
In this tutorial, we first review the family of conventional multiple-antenna techniques, and then we provide a general overview of the recent concept of the powerful Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) family based on a universal Space-Time Shift Keying (STSK) philosophy. When appropriately configured, the proposed STSK scheme has the potential of outperforming conventional MIMO arrangements
Coherent multiple-antenna block-fading channels at finite blocklength
In this paper we consider a channel model that is often used to describe the
mobile wireless scenario: multiple-antenna additive white Gaussian noise
channels subject to random (fading) gain with full channel state information at
the receiver. Dynamics of the fading process are approximated by a
piecewise-constant process (frequency non-selective isotropic block fading).
This work addresses the finite blocklength fundamental limits of this channel
model. Specifically, we give a formula for the channel dispersion -- a quantity
governing the delay required to achieve capacity. Multiplicative nature of the
fading disturbance leads to a number of interesting technical difficulties that
required us to enhance traditional methods for finding channel dispersion.
Alas, one difficulty remains: the converse (impossibility) part of our result
holds under an extra constraint on the growth of the peak-power with
blocklength.
Our results demonstrate, for example, that while capacities of and antenna configurations coincide (under fixed received
power), the coding delay can be quite sensitive to this switch. For example, at
the received SNR of dB the system achieves capacity with
codes of length (delay) which is only of the length required for the
system. Another interesting implication is that for the MISO
channel, the dispersion-optimal coding schemes require employing orthogonal
designs such as Alamouti's scheme -- a surprising observation considering the
fact that Alamouti's scheme was designed for reducing demodulation errors, not
improving coding rate. Finding these dispersion-optimal coding schemes
naturally gives a criteria for producing orthogonal design-like inputs in
dimensions where orthogonal designs do not exist
Decision Fusion in Space-Time Spreading aided Distributed MIMO WSNs
In this letter, we propose space-time spreading (STS) of local sensor
decisions before reporting them over a wireless multiple access channel (MAC),
in order to achieve flexible balance between diversity and multiplexing gain as
well as eliminate any chance of intrinsic interference inherent in MAC
scenarios. Spreading of the sensor decisions using dispersion vectors exploits
the benefits of multi-slot decision to improve low-complexity diversity gain
and opportunistic throughput. On the other hand, at the receive side of the
reporting channel, we formulate and compare optimum and sub-optimum fusion
rules for arriving at a reliable conclusion.Simulation results demonstrate gain
in performance with STS aided transmission from a minimum of 3 times to a
maximum of 6 times over performance without STS.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Reduced-Complexity Noncoherently Detected Differential Space-Time Shift Keying
Motivated by the recent development of Spatial Modulation (SM) and Differential Space-Time Shift Keying (DSTSK), we propose a reduced-complexity Conventional Differential Detector (CDD) as well as its reduced-complexity Multiple-Symbol Differential Sphere Detector (MSDSD) counterpart for DSTSK. Both schemes operate on a symbol-by-symbol basis in order to reduce the complexity of the classic block-by-block-based CDD and MSDSD, whilst still approaching the optimum performance of the full-search-based Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector. More explicitly, we carefully consider the objective function to be used for decoding the index of the specific antenna activated by taking into account the particular modulation scheme employed. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CDD and MSDSD designed for DSTSK guarantee a significant complexity reduction compared to the classic block-based decoders, especially for high-rate DSTSK schemes, which is achieved without a performance penalty
Space-Time-Frequency Shift Keying for Dispersive Channels
Inspired by the concept of the Space-Time Shift Keying (STSK) modulation, in this paper we proposed the Space-Frequency Shift Keying (SFSK) modulation as well as the Space-Time-Frequency Shift Keying (STFSK) concept which spreads the transmit signal not only across the space and time domains, but also the frequency domain. The performance of STSK modulation is degraded by about 2 dB, when the channel changes from uncorrelated frequency-flat fading to the frequency-selective environment of the 6-tap COST207 model. By contrast, as a benefit of Frequency Shift keying, the SFSK and STFSK schemes are capable of maintaining their performance also in frequency-selective fading environments. Finally, we demonstrate that the STSK and SFSK schemes constitute special cases of the STFSK modulatio
Design guidelines for spatial modulation
A new class of low-complexity, yet energyefficient Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission techniques, namely the family of Spatial Modulation (SM) aided MIMOs (SM-MIMO) has emerged. These systems are capable of exploiting the spatial dimensions (i.e. the antenna indices) as an additional dimension invoked for transmitting information, apart from the traditional Amplitude and Phase Modulation (APM). SM is capable of efficiently operating in diverse MIMO configurations in the context of future communication systems. It constitutes a promising transmission candidate for large-scale MIMO design and for the indoor optical wireless communication whilst relying on a single-Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Moreover, SM may also be viewed as an entirely new hybrid modulation scheme, which is still in its infancy. This paper aims for providing a general survey of the SM design framework as well as of its intrinsic limits. In particular, we focus our attention on the associated transceiver design, on spatial constellation optimization, on link adaptation techniques, on distributed/ cooperative protocol design issues, and on their meritorious variants
Dispensing with Channel Estimation…
In this article, we investigate the feasibility of noncoherent detection schemes in wireless communication systems as a low-complexity alternative to the family of coherent schemes. The noncoherent schemes require no channel knowledge at the receiver for the detection of the received signal, while the coherent schemes require channel inherently complex estimation, which implies that pilot symbols have to be transmitted resulting in a wastage of the available bandwidth as well as the transmission power
Structured Dispersion Matrices From Division Algebra Codes for Space-Time Shift Keying
We propose a novel method of constructing Dispersion Matrices (DM) for Coherent Space-Time Shift Keying (CSTSK) relying on arbitrary PSK signal sets by exploiting codes from division algebras. We show that classic codes from Cyclic Division Algebras (CDA) may be interpreted as DMs conceived for PSK signal sets. Hence various benefits of CDA codes such as their ability to achieve full diversity are inherited by CSTSK. We demonstrate that the proposed CDA based DMs are capable of achieving a lower symbol error ratio than the existing DMs generated using the capacity as their optimization objective function for both perfect and imperfect channel estimation
Single-RF spatial modulation requires single-carrier transmission: frequency-domain turbo equalization for dispersive channels
In this paper, we propose a broadband single-carrier (SC) spatial-modulation (SM) based multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) architecture relying on a soft-decision (SoD) frequency-domain equalization (FDE) receiver. We demonstrate that conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based broadband transmissions are not readily suitable for the single–radio frequency (RF) assisted SM-MIMO schemes, since this scheme does not exhibit any substantial performance advantage over single-antenna transmissions. To circumvent this limitation, a low-complexity soft-decision (SoD) FDE algorithm based on the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion is invoked for our broadband SC-based SM-MIMO scheme, which is capable of operating in a strongly dispersive channel having a long channel impulse response (CIR) at a moderate decoding complexity. Furthermore, our SoD FDE attains a near-capacity performance with the aid of a three-stage concatenated SC-based SM architecture
Coherent versus non-coherent decode-and-forward relaying aided cooperative space-time shift keying
Motivated by the recent concept of Space-Time Shift Keying (STSK), we propose a novel cooperative STSK family, which is capable of achieving a flexible rate-diversity tradeoff, in the context of cooperative space-time transmissions. More specifically, we first propose a Coherent cooperative STSK (CSTSK) scheme, where each Relay Node (RN) activates Decode-and-Forward (DF) transmissions, depending on the success or failure of Cyclic Redundancy Checking (CRC). We invoke a bitto- STSK mapping rule, where according to the input bits, one of the Q pre-assigned dispersion vectors is activated to implicitly convey log2(Q) bits, which are transmitted in combination with the classic log2(L)-bit modulated symbol. Additionally, we introduce a beneficial dispersion vector design, which enables us to dispense with symbol-level Inter-Relay Synchronization (IRS). Furthermore, the Destination Node (DN) is capable of jointly detecting the signals received from the source-destination and relay-destination links, using a low-complexity single-stream-based Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector, which is an explicit benefit of our Inter-Element Interference (IEI)-free system model. More importantly, as a benefit of its design flexibility, our cooperative CSTSK arrangement enables us to adapt the number of the RNs, the transmission rate as well as the achievable diversity order. Moreover, we also propose a Differentially-encoded cooperative STSK (DSTSK) arrangement, which dispenses with CSI estimation at any of the nodes, while retaining the fundamental benefits of the cooperative CSTSK scheme
