Algorithms for Rapidly Dispersing Robot Swarms in Unknown Environments
We develop and analyze algorithms for dispersing a swarm of primitive robots
in an unknown environment, R. The primary objective is to minimize the
makespan, that is, the time to fill the entire region. An environment is
composed of pixels that form a connected subset of the integer grid.
There is at most one robot per pixel and robots move horizontally or
vertically at unit speed. Robots enter R by means of k>=1 door pixels
Robots are primitive finite automata, only having local communication, local
sensors, and a constant-sized memory.
We first give algorithms for the single-door case (i.e., k=1), analyzing the
algorithms both theoretically and experimentally. We prove that our algorithms
have optimal makespan 2A-1, where A is the area of R.
We next give an algorithm for the multi-door case (k>1), based on a
wall-following version of the leader-follower strategy. We prove that our
strategy is O(log(k+1))-competitive, and that this bound is tight for our

Towards homeostatic architecture: simulation of the generative process of a termite mound construction
This report sets out to the theme of the generation of a ‘living’,
homeostatic and self-organizing architectural structure. The main research
question this project addresses is what innovative techniques of design,
construction and materials could prospectively be developed and eventually
applied to create and sustain human-made buildings which are mostly
adaptive, self-controlled and self-functioning, without option to a vast supply
of materials and peripheral services. The hypothesis is that through the
implementation of the biological building behaviour of termites, in terms of
collective construction mechanisms that are based on environmental stimuli,
we could achieve a simulation of the generative process of their adaptive
structures, capable to inform in many ways human construction. The essay
explicates the development of the 3-dimensional, agent-based simulation of
the termite collective construction and analyzes the results, which involve
besides physical modelling of the evolved structures. It finally elucidates the
potential of this emerging and adaptive architectural performance to be
translated to human practice and thus enlighten new ecological engineering
and design methodologies
Spatio-Temporal Patterns act as Computational Mechanisms governing Emergent behavior in Robotic Swarms
open access articleOur goal is to control a robotic swarm without removing its swarm-like nature. In other words, we aim to intrinsically control a robotic swarm emergent behavior. Past attempts at governing robotic swarms or their selfcoordinating emergent behavior, has proven ineffective, largely due to the swarm’s inherent randomness (making it difficult to predict) and utter simplicity (they lack a leader, any kind of centralized control, long-range communication, global knowledge, complex internal models and only operate on a couple of basic, reactive rules). The main problem is that emergent phenomena itself is not fully understood, despite being at the forefront of current research. Research into 1D and 2D Cellular Automata has uncovered a hidden computational layer which bridges the micromacro gap (i.e., how individual behaviors at the micro-level influence the global behaviors on the macro-level). We hypothesize that there also lie embedded computational mechanisms at the heart of a robotic swarm’s emergent behavior. To test this theory, we proceeded to simulate robotic swarms (represented as both particles and dynamic networks) and then designed local rules to induce various types of intelligent, emergent behaviors (as well as designing genetic algorithms to evolve robotic swarms with emergent behaviors). Finally, we analysed these robotic swarms and successfully confirmed our hypothesis; analyzing their developments and interactions over time revealed various forms of embedded spatiotemporal patterns which store, propagate and parallel process information across the swarm according to some internal, collision-based logic (solving the mystery of how simple robots are able to self-coordinate and allow global behaviors to emerge across the swarm)
Metastable Clusters and Channels Formed by Active Particles with Aligning Interactions
We introduce a novel model for active particles with short-range aligning
interactions and study their behaviour in crowded environments using numerical
simulations. When only active particles are present, we observe a transition
from a gaseous state to the emergence of metastable clusters as the level of
orientational noise is reduced. When also passive particle are present, we

Evolution of Swarm Robotics Systems with Novelty Search
Novelty search is a recent artificial evolution technique that challenges
traditional evolutionary approaches. In novelty search, solutions are rewarded
based on their novelty, rather than their quality with respect to a predefined
objective. The lack of a predefined objective precludes premature convergence
caused by a deceptive fitness function. In this paper, we apply novelty search
combined with NEAT to the evolution of neural controllers for homogeneous
swarms of robots. Our empirical study is conducted in simulation, and we use a
common swarm robotics task - aggregation, and a more challenging task - sharing
of an energy recharging station. Our results show that novelty search is
unaffected by deception, is notably effective in bootstrapping the evolution,
can find solutions with lower complexity than fitness-based evolution, and can
find a broad diversity of solutions for the same task. Even in non-deceptive
setups, novelty search achieves solution qualities similar to those obtained in
traditional fitness-based evolution. Our study also encompasses variants of
novelty search that work in concert with fitness-based evolution to combine the
exploratory character of novelty search with the exploitatory character of
objective-based evolution. We show that these variants can further improve the
performance of novelty search. Overall, our study shows that novelty search is

Evolution of collective behaviors for a real swarm of aquatic surface robots
Swarm robotics is a promising approach for the coordination of large numbers of robots. While previous studies have shown that evolutionary robotics techniques can be applied to obtain robust and efficient self-organized behaviors for robot swarms, most studies have been conducted in simulation, and the few that have been conducted on real robots have been confined to laboratory environments. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time a swarm robotics system with evolved control successfully operating in a real and uncontrolled environment. We evolve neural network-based controllers in simulation for canonical swarm robotics tasks, namely homing, dispersion, clustering, and monitoring. We then assess the performance of the controllers on a real swarm of up to ten aquatic surface robots. Our results show that the evolved controllers transfer successfully to real robots and achieve a performance similar to the performance obtained in simulation. We validate that the evolved controllers display key properties of swarm intelligence-based control, namely scalability, flexibility, and robustness on the real swarm. We conclude with a proof-of-concept experiment in which the swarm performs a complete environmental monitoring task by combining multiple evolved controllers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Route Swarm: Wireless Network Optimization through Mobility
In this paper, we demonstrate a novel hybrid architecture for coordinating
networked robots in sensing and information routing applications. The proposed
INformation and Sensing driven PhysIcally REconfigurable robotic network
(INSPIRE), consists of a Physical Control Plane (PCP) which commands agent
position, and an Information Control Plane (ICP) which regulates information
flow towards communication/sensing objectives. We describe an instantiation
where a mobile robotic network is dynamically reconfigured to ensure high
quality routes between static wireless nodes, which act as source/destination
pairs for information flow. The ICP commands the robots towards evenly
distributed inter-flow allocations, with intra-flow configurations that
maximize route quality. The PCP then guides the robots via potential-based
control to reconfigure according to ICP commands. This formulation, deemed
Route Swarm, decouples information flow and physical control, generating a
feedback between routing and sensing needs and robotic configuration. We
demonstrate our propositions through simulation under a realistic wireless
