A distributed directory scheme for information access in mobile computers
In this paper, we discuss the design aspects of a dynamic distributed directory scheme (DDS) to facilitate efficient and transparent access to information files in mobile environments. The proposed directory interface enables users of mobile computers to view a distributed file system on a network of computers as a globally shared file system. In order to counter some of the limitations of wireless communications, we propose improvised invalidation schemes that avoid false sharing and ensure uninterrupted usage under disconnected and low bandwidth conditions
Document Archiving, Replication and Migration Container for Mobile Web Users
With the increasing use of mobile workstations for a wide variety of tasks
and associated information needs, and with many variations of available
networks, access to data becomes a prime consideration. This paper discusses
issues of workstation mobility and proposes a solution wherein the data
structures are accessed in an encapsulated form - through the Portable File
System (PFS) wrapper. The paper discusses an implementation of the Portable
File System, highlighting the architecture and commenting upon performance of
an experimental system. Although investigations have been focused upon mobile
access of WWW documents, this technique could be applied to any mobile data

Designing a commutative replicated data type
Commuting operations greatly simplify consistency in distributed systems.
This paper focuses on designing for commutativity, a topic neglected
previously. We show that the replicas of \emph{any} data type for which
concurrent operations commute converges to a correct value, under some simple
and standard assumptions. We also show that such a data type supports
transactions with very low cost. We identify a number of approaches and
techniques to ensure commutativity. We re-use some existing ideas
(non-destructive updates coupled with invariant identification), but propose a
much more efficient implementation. Furthermore, we propose a new technique,
background consensus. We illustrate these ideas with a shared edit buffer data
type
The 3DMA Middleware for Mobile Applications
Mobile devices have received much research interest in re- cent years. Mobility raises new issues such as more dynamic context, limited computing resources, and frequent disconnections. To handle these issues, we propose a middleware, called 3DMA, which introduces three requirements, 1) distribution, 2) decoupling and 3) decomposition. 3DMA uses a space based middleware approach combined with a set of workers which are able to act on the users behalf either to reduce load on the mobile device, or to support disconnected behavior. Online Collaborative Editor
“Online collaborative editor” is a node.js based browser application that provides real time collaborative editing of files and improves pair programming. Current real time editors fail to provide simultaneous viewing and editing of files within the server and results in a complex version controlling system. Such systems are also vulnerable to deadlocks and race conditions. This project provides a platform for real time collaborative editors, which can support simultaneous editing and viewing of files and handle concurrency problems by using locking mechanism. The experiment results showed that node.js platform provides good performance for collaborative editing
DIAMOnDS - DIstributed Agents for MObile & Dynamic Services
Distributed Services Architecture with support for mobile agents between
services, offer significantly improved communication and computational
flexibility. The uses of agents allow execution of complex operations that
involve large amounts of data to be processed effectively using distributed
resources. The prototype system Distributed Agents for Mobile and Dynamic
Services (DIAMOnDS), allows a service to send agents on its behalf, to other
services, to perform data manipulation and processing. Agents have been
implemented as mobile services that are discovered using the Jini Lookup
mechanism and used by other services for task management and communication.
Agents provide proxies for interaction with other services as well as specific
GUI to monitor and control the agent activity. Thus agents acting on behalf of
one service cooperate with other services to carry out a job, providing
inter-operation of loosely coupled services in a semi-autonomous way. Remote
file system access functionality has been incorporated by the agent framework
and allows services to dynamically share and browse the file system resources
of hosts, running the services. Generic database access functionality has been
implemented in the mobile agent framework that allows performing complex data
mining and processing operations efficiently in distributed system. A basic
data searching agent is also implemented that performs a query based search in
a file system. The testing of the framework was carried out on WAN by moving
Connectivity Test agents between AgentStations in CERN, Switzerland and NUST,

The LCG POOL Project, General Overview and Project Structure
The POOL project has been created to implement a common persistency framework
for the LHC Computing Grid (LCG) application area. POOL is tasked to store
experiment data and meta data in the multi Petabyte area in a distributed and
grid enabled way. First production use of new framework is expected for summer
2003. The project follows a hybrid approach combining C++ Object streaming
technology such as ROOT I/O for the bulk data with a transactionally safe
relational database (RDBMS) store such as MySQL. POOL is based a strict
component approach - as laid down in the LCG persistency and blue print RTAG
documents - providing navigational access to distributed data without exposing
details of the particular storage technology. This contribution describes the
project breakdown into work packages, the high level interaction between the
