    The health sector is facing increasing pressure to provide effective, efficient, and affordable care to the population it serves. The National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom (UK) has regularly faced scrutiny with NHS England being issued a number of challenges in recent years to improve operational efficiency, reduce wasted space, and cut expenditure. The most recent challenge issued to NHS England has seen a requirement to save £5bn per annum by 2020, while reducing wasted space from 4.4% to 2.5% across the NHS estate. Similarly, satisfaction in the health service is also under scrutiny as staff retention and patient experiences are used in determining the performance of facilities. [Continues.

    Autonomous indoor wayfinding for individuals with cognitive impairments

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A challenge to individuals with cognitive impairments in wayfinding is how to remain oriented, recall routines, and travel in unfamiliar areas in a way relying on limited cognitive capacity. While people without disabilities often use maps or written directions as navigation tools or for remaining oriented, this cognitively-impaired population is very sensitive to issues of abstraction (e.g. icons on maps or signage) and presents the designer with a challenge to tailor navigation information specific to each user and context.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This paper describes an approach to providing distributed cognition support of travel guidance for persons with cognitive disabilities. A solution is proposed based on passive near-field RFID tags and scanning PDAs. A prototype is built and tested in field experiments with real subjects. The unique strength of the system is the ability to provide unique-to-the-user prompts that are triggered by context. The key to the approach is to spread the context awareness across the system, with the context being flagged by the RFID tags and the appropriate response being evoked by displaying the appropriate path guidance images indexed by the intersection of specific end-user and context ID embedded in RFID tags.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that passive RFIDs generally served as good context for triggering navigation prompts, although individual differences in effectiveness varied. The results of controlled experiments provided more evidence with regard to applicabilities of the proposed autonomous indoor wayfinding method.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our findings suggest that the ability to adapt indoor wayfinding devices for appropriate timing of directions and standing orientation will be particularly important.</p

    RFID-based Danger Prevention for Home Safety

    [[abstract]]Certain locations and objects at home can easily cause dangerous situations for elders over 65 and kids under 14. It is desired that the caregiver is warned when elders or kids get close to these locations or objects to prevent dangerous situations. In this research, we developed a system for such a purpose. An active RFID tag is attached to each location and each object. The elder or kid carries an RFID reader which detects the signal strengths (RSSI values) of all tags and transmits them to the system in a computer in real time. The system issues a warning to the caregiver when the dangerous degree is above the predefined threshold. A dangerous situation can be prevented if the caregiver watches out beforehand. The dangerous degree is determined through fuzzy inference on RSSI values and the user age. A feedback mechanism is also designed to provide personalized services.     Personalize Wayfinding Information for Fire Responders based on Virtual Reality Training Data

    Modern buildings with increasing complexity can cause serious difficulties for first responders in emergency wayfinding. While real-time data collection and information analytics become easier in indoor wayfinding, a new challenge has arisen: cognitive overload due to information redundancy. Standardized and universal spatial information systems are still widely used in emergency wayfinding, ignoring first responders’ individual difference in information intake. This paper proposes and tests the theoretical framework of a spatial information systems for first responders, which reflects their individual difference in information preference and helps reduce the cognitive load in line of duty. The proposed method includes the use of Virtual Reality (VR) experiments to simulate real world buildings, and the modeling of first responders’ reactions to different information formats and contents in simulated wayfinding tasks. This work is expected to set a foundation of future spatial information system that correctly and effectively responds to first responders’ needs

    Design criteria for Indoor Positioning Systems in hospitals using technological, organizational and individual perspectives

    This dissertation considers three different studies that handle Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) in hospitals. Study 1 uses the Reasoned Action Approach by questioning hospital visitors and employees about their intention to use IPS in hospitals. Study 2 reviews IPS in hospitals. Study 3 is based on the results of the first two studies. It handles expert interviews that were conducted with different hospitals and IPS developers to evaluate the determined propositions. Then, the insights were used to conduct and evaluate experiments by testing an ultrasound-based IPS for hospitals
