    Animation, Simulation, and Control of Soft Characters using Layered Representations and Simplified Physics-based Methods

    Realistic behavior of computer generated characters is key to bringing virtual environments, computer games, and other interactive applications to life. The plausibility of a virtual scene is strongly influenced by the way objects move around and interact with each other. Traditionally, actions are limited to motion capture driven or pre-scripted motion of the characters. Physics enhance the sense of realism: physical simulation is required to make objects act as expected in real life. To make gaming and virtual environments truly immersive,it is crucial to simulate the response of characters to collisions and to produce secondary effects such as skin wrinkling and muscle bulging. Unfortunately, existing techniques cannot generally achieve these effects in real time, do not address the coupled response of a character's skeleton and skin to collisions nor do they support artistic control. In this dissertation, I present interactive algorithms that enable physical simulation of deformable characters with high surface detail and support for intuitive deformation control. I propose a novel unified framework for real-time modeling of soft objects with skeletal deformations and surface deformation due to contact, and their interplay for object surfaces with up to tens of thousands of degrees of freedom.I make use of layered models to reduce computational complexity. I introduce dynamic deformation textures, which map three dimensional deformations in the deformable skin layer to a two dimensional domain for extremely efficient parallel computation of the dynamic elasticity equations and optimized hierarchical collision detection. I also enhance layered models with responsive contact handling, to support the interplay between skeletal motion and surface contact and the resulting two-way coupling effects. Finally, I present dynamic morph targets, which enable intuitive control of dynamic skin deformations at run-time by simply sculpting pose-specific surface shapes. The resulting framework enables real-time and directable simulation of soft articulated characters with frictional contact response, capturing the interplay between skeletal dynamics and complex,non-linear skin deformations

    Projective Dynamics: Fusing Constraint Projections for Fast Simulation

    We present a new method for implicit time integration of physical systems. Our approach builds a bridge between nodal Finite Element methods and Position Based Dynamics, leading to a simple, efficient, robust, yet accurate solver that supports many different types of constraints. We propose specially designed energy potentials that can be solved efficiently using an alternating optimization approach. Inspired by continuum mechanics, we derive a set of continuumbased potentials that can be efficiently incorporated within our solver. We demonstrate the generality and robustness of our approach in many different applications ranging from the simulation of solids, cloths, and shells, to example-based simulation. Comparisons to Newton-based and Position Based Dynamics solvers highlight the benefits of our formulation

    Statistical and Directable Methods for Large-Scale Rigid Body Simulation

    This dissertation describes several techniques to improve performance and controllability of large-scale rigid body simulations. We first describe a statistical simulation method that replaces certain stages of rigid body simulation with a statistically- based approximation. We begin by collecting statistical data regarding changes in linear and angular momentum for collisions of a given object. From the data, we extract a statistical ”signature” for the object, giving a compact representation of the object’s response to collision events. During object simulation, both the collision detection and the collision response calculations are replaced by simpler calculations based on the statistical signature. In addition, based on our statistical simulator, we develop a mixed rigid body simulator that combines an impulse-based with a statistically-based collision response method. This allows us to maintain high accuracy in important parts of the scene while achieving greater efficiency by simplifying less important parts of the simulation. The resulting system gives speedups of more than an order of magnitude on several large rigid body simulations while maintaining high accuracy in key places and capturing overall statistical behavior in other places. Also, we introduce two methods for directing pile behavior to form the desired shapes. To fill up the space inside the desired shapes and maintain the stability of the desired pile shapes, our methods analyze the configurations and status of all objects and properly select some candidates to have their degrees of freedom (DOFs) reduced. Our first method utilizes the idea of angles of repose to perform the analysis. According to the desired angle of repose, we create an additional spatial structure to track the piling status and select suitable objects to reduce their DOFs. In our second method, we adapt equilibrium analysis in a local scheme to find “stable” objects of the stacking structure. Then, we restrict their DOFs by adding constraints on them for stabilizing the structure. Overall, our directing methods generate a wider variety of piled structures than possible with strict physically-based simulation

    Fast Simulation of Mass-Spring Systems

    We describe a scheme for time integration of mass-spring systems that makes use of a solver based on block coordinate descent. This scheme provides a fast solution for classical linear (Hookean) springs. We express the widely used implicit Euler method as an energy minimization problem and introduce spring directions as auxiliary unknown variables. The system is globally linear in the node positions, and the non-linear terms involving the directions are strictly local. Because the global linear system does not depend on run-time state, the matrix can be pre-factored, allowing for very fast iterations. Our method converges to the same final result as would be obtained by solving the standard form of implicit Euler using Newton’s method. Although the asymptotic convergence of Newton’s method is faster than ours, the initial ratio of work to error reduction with our method is much faster than Newton’s. For real-time visual applications, where speed and stability are more important than precision, we obtain visually acceptable results at a total cost per timestep that is only a fraction of that required for a single Newton iteration. When higher accuracy is required, our algorithm can be used to compute a good starting point for subsequent Newton’s iteration

    Asynchronous Variational Contact Mechanics

    An asynchronous, variational method for simulating elastica in complex contact and impact scenarios is developed. Asynchronous Variational Integrators (AVIs) are extended to handle contact forces by associating different time steps to forces instead of to spatial elements. By discretizing a barrier potential by an infinite sum of nested quadratic potentials, these extended AVIs are used to resolve contact while obeying momentum- and energy-conservation laws. A series of two- and three-dimensional examples illustrate the robustness and good energy behavior of the method

    Enhancing Mesh Deformation Realism: Dynamic Mesostructure Detailing and Procedural Microstructure Synthesis

    Propomos uma solução para gerar dados de mapas de relevo dinâmicos para simular deformações em superfícies macias, com foco na pele humana. A solução incorpora a simulação de rugas ao nível mesoestrutural e utiliza texturas procedurais para adicionar detalhes de microestrutura estáticos. Oferece flexibilidade além da pele humana, permitindo a geração de padrões que imitam deformações em outros materiais macios, como couro, durante a animação. As soluções existentes para simular rugas e pistas de deformação frequentemente dependem de hardware especializado, que é dispendioso e de difícil acesso. Além disso, depender exclusivamente de dados capturados limita a direção artística e dificulta a adaptação a mudanças. Em contraste, a solução proposta permite a síntese dinâmica de texturas que se adaptam às deformações subjacentes da malha de forma fisicamente plausível. Vários métodos foram explorados para sintetizar rugas diretamente na geometria, mas sofrem de limitações como auto-interseções e maiores requisitos de armazenamento. A intervenção manual de artistas na criação de mapas de rugas e mapas de tensão permite controle, mas pode ser limitada em deformações complexas ou onde maior realismo seja necessário. O nosso trabalho destaca o potencial dos métodos procedimentais para aprimorar a geração de padrões de deformação dinâmica, incluindo rugas, com maior controle criativo e sem depender de dados capturados. A incorporação de padrões procedimentais estáticos melhora o realismo, e a abordagem pode ser estendida além da pele para outros materiais macios.We propose a solution for generating dynamic heightmap data to simulate deformations for soft surfaces, with a focus on human skin. The solution incorporates mesostructure-level wrinkles and utilizes procedural textures to add static microstructure details. It offers flexibility beyond human skin, enabling the generation of patterns mimicking deformations in other soft materials, such as leater, during animation. Existing solutions for simulating wrinkles and deformation cues often rely on specialized hardware, which is costly and not easily accessible. Moreover, relying solely on captured data limits artistic direction and hinders adaptability to changes. In contrast, our proposed solution provides dynamic texture synthesis that adapts to underlying mesh deformations. Various methods have been explored to synthesize wrinkles directly to the geometry, but they suffer from limitations such as self-intersections and increased storage requirements. Manual intervention by artists using wrinkle maps and tension maps provides control but may be limited to the physics-based simulations. Our research presents the potential of procedural methods to enhance the generation of dynamic deformation patterns, including wrinkles, with greater creative control and without reliance on captured data. Incorporating static procedural patterns improves realism, and the approach can be extended to other soft-materials beyond skin

    Modeling and estimation of internal friction in cloth

    Force-deformation measurements of cloth exhibit significant hysteresis, and many researchers have identified internal friction as the source of this effect. However, it has not been incorporated into computer animation models of cloth. In this paper, we propose a model of internal friction based on an augmented reparameterization of Dahl's model, and we show that this model provides a good match to several important features of cloth hysteresis even with a minimal set of parameters. We also propose novel parameter estimation procedures that are based on simple and inexpensive setups and need only sparse data, as opposed to the complex hardware and dense data acquisition of previous methods. Finally, we provide an algorithm for the efficient simulation of internal friction, and we demonstrate it on simulation examples that show disparate behavior with and without internal friction

    dissertationPhysics-based animation has proven to be a powerful tool for creating compelling animations for film and games. Most techniques in graphics are based on methods developed for predictive simulation for engineering applications; however, the goals for graphics applications are dramatically different than the goals of engineering applications. As a result, most physics-based animation tools are difficult for artists to work with, providing little direct control over simulation results. In this thesis, we describe tools for physics-based animation designed with artist needs and expertise in mind. Most materials can be modeled as elastoplastic: they recover from small deformations, but large deformations permanently alter their rest shape. Unfortunately, large plastic deformations, common in graphical applications, cause simulation instabilities if not addressed. Most elastoplastic simulation techniques in graphics rely on a finite-element approach where objects are discretized into a tetrahedral mesh. Using these approaches, maintaining simulation stability during large plastic flows requires remeshing, a complex and computationally expensive process. We introduce a new point-based approach that does not rely on an explicit mesh and avoids the expense of remeshing. Our approach produces comparable results with much lower implementation complexity. Points are a ubiquitous primitive for many effects, so our approach also integrates well with existing artist pipelines. Next, we introduce a new technique for animating stylized images which we call Dynamic Sprites. Artists can use our tool to create digital assets that interact in a natural, but stylized, way in virtual environments. In order to support the types of nonphysical, exaggerated motions often desired by artists, our approach relies on a heavily modified deformable body simulator, equipped with a set of new intuitive controls and an example-based deformation model. Our approach allows artists to specify how the shape of the object should change as it moves and collides in interactive virtual environments. Finally, we introduce a new technique for animating destructive scenes. Our approach is built on the insight that the most important visual aspects of destruction are plastic deformation and fracture. Like with Dynamic Sprites, we use an example-based model of deformation for intuitive artist control. Our simulator treats objects as rigid when computing dynamics but allows them to deform plastically and fracture in between timesteps based on interactions with the other objects. We demonstrate that our approach can efficiently animate the types of destructive scenes common in film and games. These animation techniques are designed to exploit artist expertise to ease creation of complex animations. By using artist-friendly primitives and allowing artists to provide characteristic deformations as input, our techniques enable artists to create more compelling animations, more easily
