Digital library is a very complex system. A digital library can have multi-tier architecture. Different digital libraries follow different architectures and models. This paper discusses the basic concepts and principles involved in its design and architecture. It further presents an evaluative account of various digital library architectures

Academic digital library in Malaysia: A case study on the status of digital reference services

    Get PDF
This paper highlights the current status of digital library services provided by selected public academic libraries in Malaysia. The drift from traditional library to digital library architecture has set drastic changes in favor of adopting knowledge-gain mechanisms via the use of networked and digital environments. With diversity of functions, academic digital library is seen the most awaiting proxy in changing the information culture among academic users. This paper in general attempts to highlight the phenomena of using digital library system in public universities in Malaysia. The focal of the discussion is on digital reference services of academic digital library

Metadata Architecture for Digital Libraries: Conceptual framework for Indian Digital Libraries

    Get PDF
This paper describes approach of development of Metadata solution for digital library architecture for resource description and retrieval. This deals with the concept of Metadata [2], the different Metadata standards (Dublin core in particular [5]), Digital library environment, computer network capabilities etc. This paper also discusses two of the Digital Library architecture protocols, for resource description and retrieval. They are STARTS (Stanford Protocol Proposal for Internet Retrieval and Search) [8] and SODA (Smart Objects and Dump Archives)[13] architecture to arrive at a possible protocol that would help to build Indian Digital Libraries [5]. While proposing the new architecture the existing Indian environment with respect to information sources and user's query of the information sources [5.1], which are feasible for launch of this protocol for information processing and retrieval has been dealt with. This is a pilot study which the author has done while doing his Fulbright fellowship in the College of Library Information Studies, University of Maryland, College Park, MD during 1999-2000

Scholarly Very Large Data: Challenges for Digital Libraries (White Paper)

    Get PDF
The volume of scholarly data has been growing exponentially over the last 50 years. The total size of the open access documents is estimated to be 35 million by 2022. The total amount of data to be handled, including crawled documents, production repository, metadata, extracted content, and their replications, can be as high as 350TB. Academic digital library search engines face signi!cant challenges in maintaining sustainable services. We discuss these challenges and propose feasible solutions to key modules in the digital library architecture including the document storage, data extraction, database and index. We use CiteSeerX as a case study

LibraRing: An Architecture for Distributed Digital Libraries Based on DHTs

Abstract. We present a digital library architecture based on distributed hash tables. We discuss the main components of this architecture and the protocols for offering information retrieval and information filtering functionality. We present an experimental evaluation of our proposals.

Delivering the Maori-language newspapers on the Internet

Although any collection of historical newspapers provides a particularly rich and valuable record of events and social and political commentary, the content tends to be difficult to access and extremely time-consuming to browse or search. The advent of digital libraries has meant that for electronically stored text, full-text searching is now a tool readily available for researchers, or indeed anyone wishing to have asscess to specific information in text. Text in this form can be readily distributed via CD-ROM or the Internet, with a significant impact on accessibility over traditional microfiche or hard-copy distribution. For the majority of text being generated de nouveau, availability in electronic form is standard, and hence the increasing use of full-text search facilities. However, for legacy text available only in printed form, the provision of these electronic search tools is dependent on the prior electronic capture of digital facsimile images of the printed text, followed by the conversion of these images to electronic text through the process of optical character recognition (OCR). This article describes a project undertaken at the University of Waikato over the period 1999 to 2001 to produce a full-text searchable version of the Niupepa or Maori- language newspaper collection for delivery over the Internet
