Secure and Reconfigurable Network Design for Critical Information Dissemination in the Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT)
The Internet of things (IoT) is revolutionizing the management and control of
automated systems leading to a paradigm shift in areas such as smart homes,
smart cities, health care, transportation, etc. The IoT technology is also
envisioned to play an important role in improving the effectiveness of military
operations in battlefields. The interconnection of combat equipment and other
battlefield resources for coordinated automated decisions is referred to as the
Internet of battlefield things (IoBT). IoBT networks are significantly
different from traditional IoT networks due to the battlefield specific
challenges such as the absence of communication infrastructure, and the
susceptibility of devices to cyber and physical attacks. The combat efficiency
and coordinated decision-making in war scenarios depends highly on real-time
data collection, which in turn relies on the connectivity of the network and
the information dissemination in the presence of adversaries. This work aims to
build the theoretical foundations of designing secure and reconfigurable IoBT
networks. Leveraging the theories of stochastic geometry and mathematical
epidemiology, we develop an integrated framework to study the communication of
mission-critical data among different types of network devices and consequently
design the network in a cost effective manner.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Interconnecting IoT devices to improve the QoL of elderly people
Es un borrador de: Flores-Martin, D., PĂ©rez-Vereda, A., Berrocal, J., Canal, C., & Murillo, J. M. (2020). Interconnecting IoT Devices to Improve the QoL of Elderly People. In Mendes, D., Fonseca, C., Lopes, M. J., GarcĂa-Alonso, J., & Murillo, J. M. (Ed.), Exploring the Role of ICTs in Healthy Aging (pp. 148-165). IGI Global. http://doi:10.4018/978-1-7998-1937-0.ch009The rate at which the Internet is growing is unstoppable due to the large number of connected smart devices. Manufacturers often develop specific protocols for their own devices that do not usually follow any standards. This hinders the interconnection and coordination of devices from different manufacturers, limiting the number of daily activities that can be supported. Some works are proposing different techniques to reduce this barrier and avoid the vendor lock-in issue. Nevertheless, this interconnection should also depends on the context. In this chapter, the authors propose a system to dynamically identify the interconnections required each specific situation depending on the context. This proposal has been tested in case studies focused in elderly people with the aim of automating their daily tasks and improving their quality of life. Further, in a world with an accelerated population aging, there is an increasing interest on developing solutions for the elderly living assistance through IoT systems. This work was supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by 4IE project (0045-4IE-4-P) funded by the Interreg V-A España-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020 program, by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through project RTI2018-094591-B-I00 (MINECO/FEDER, UE) and by the Department of Economy and Infrastructure of the Government of Extremadura (GR18112, IB18030)
Enabling stream processing for people-centric IoT based on the fog computing paradigm
The world of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is gradually moving from vertical single purpose solutions to multi-purpose and collaborative applications interacting across industry verticals, organizations and people - A world of Internet of Things (IoT). The dominant approach for delivering IoT applications relies on the development of cloud-based IoT platforms that collect all the data generated by the sensing elements and centrally process the information to create real business value. In this paper, we present a system that follows the Fog Computing paradigm where the sensor resources, as well as the intermediate layers between embedded devices and cloud computing datacenters, participate by providing computational, storage, and control. We discuss the design aspects of our system and present a pilot deployment for the evaluating the performance in a real-world environment. Our findings indicate that Fog Computing can address the ever-increasing amount of data that is inherent in an IoT world by effective communication among all elements of the architecture
Interoperability in IoT
Interoperability refers to the ability of IoT systems and components to communicate and share information among them. This crucial feature is key to unlock all of the IoT paradigm´s potential, including immense technological, economic, and social benefits. Interoperability is currently a major challenge in IoT, mainly due to the lack of a reference standard and the vast heterogeneity of IoT systems. IoT interoperability has also a significant importance in big data analytics because it substantively eases data processing. This chapter analyzes the critical importance of IoT interoperability, its different types, challenges to face, diverse use cases, and prospective interoperability solutions. Given that it is a complex concept that involves multiple aspects and elements of IoT, for a deeper insight, interoperability is studied across different levels of IoT systems. Furthermore, interoperability is also re-examined from a global approach among platforms and systems.González-Usach, R.; Yacchirema-Vargas, DC.; Julián-SeguĂ, M.; Palau Salvador, CE. (2019). Towards In-Transit Analytics for Industry 4.0
Industry 4.0, or Digital Manufacturing, is a vision of inter-connected
services to facilitate innovation in the manufacturing sector. A fundamental
requirement of innovation is the ability to be able to visualise manufacturing
data, in order to discover new insight for increased competitive advantage.
This article describes the enabling technologies that facilitate In-Transit
Analytics, which is a necessary precursor for Industrial Internet of Things
(IIoT) visualisation.Comment: 8 pages, 10th IEEE International Conference on Internet of Things
