    Analysis Of A Dual Scissored-Pair,variable-Speed, Control Moment Gyroscope Driven Spherical Robot

    The objective of this research is to compare barycenter offset based designs of spherical robots to control moment gyroscope (CMG) based designs in order to determine which approach is most effective. The first objective was to develop a list of current state of the art designs in order to gain an overall understanding of what the obstacles in this area of research were. The investigation showed that barycenter offset designs can produce a low, continuous output torque, whereas CMG based designs can usually only produce a high, momentary output torque. The second objective was to develop a CMG based design that has the potential to outperform current state barycenter offset based designs. A design consisting of a dual, scissored-pair CMG (DSP-VSCMG) configuration was proposed and the dynamics derived from first principles. The third objective was to develop a set of equations that can describe performance characteristics of spherical robots . The equations that were modeled were power consumption, translational velocity, maximum incline plane, step size from rest, as well as CMG inertias and geometries. The fourth objective was to perform a series of parametric analysis using the developed equation set to compare barycenter and DSP-VSCMG based designs in a controlled environment. The analysis showed that DSP-VSCMG based designs can be more agile than barycenter designs, but require more power to do so

    Dynamic model of a spherical robot from first principles

Starting from first principles, a mathematical model for this spherical robot rolling on flat ground was developed in order to determine if this unique behavior was inherent to spherical robots in general or simply peculiar to this prototype. The complete equations of motion were found using Lagrangian methods, and numerically integrated using computer tools. A 3D simulation program was written to animate the results of integrating the equations. The dynamics apparent in the simulations were found to closely match the observed dynamics of the physical prototype

    Support polygon in the hybrid legged-wheeled CENTAURO robot: modelling and control

    Search for the robot capable to perform well in the real-world has sparked an interest in the hybrid locomotion systems. The hybrid legged-wheeled robots combine the advantages of the standard legged and wheeled platforms by switching between the quick and efficient wheeled motion on the flat grounds and the more versatile legged mobility on the unstructured terrains. With the locomotion flexibility offered by the hybrid mobility and appropriate control tools, these systems have high potential to excel in practical applications adapting effectively to real-world during locomanipuation operations. In contrary to their standard well-studied counterparts, kinematics of this newer type of robotic platforms has not been fully understood yet. This gap may lead to unexpected results when the standard locomotion methods are applied to hybrid legged-wheeled robots. To better understand mobility of the hybrid legged-wheeled robots, the model that describes the support polygon of a general hybrid legged-wheeled robot as a function of the wheel angular velocities without assumptions on the robot kinematics or wheel camber angle is proposed and analysed in this thesis. Based on the analysis of the developed support polygon model, a robust omnidirectional driving scheme has been designed. A continuous wheel motion is resolved through the Inverse Kinematics (IK) scheme, which generates robot motion compliant with the Non-Sliding Pure-Rolling (NSPR) condition. A higher-level scheme resolving a steering motion to comply with the non-holonomic constraint and to tackle the structural singularity is proposed. To improve the robot performance in presence to the unpredicted circumstances, the IK scheme has been enhanced with the introduction of a new reactive support polygon adaptation task. To this end, a novel quadratic programming task has been designed to push the system Support Polygon Vertices (SPVs) away from the robot Centre of Mass (CoM), while respecting the leg workspace limits. The proposed task has been expressed through the developed SPV model to account for the hardware limits. The omnidirectional driving and reactive control schemes have been verified in the simulation and hardware experiments. To that end, the simulator for the CENTAURO robot that models the actuation dynamics and the software framework for the locomotion research have been developed

    Modeling, Analysis, and Control of a Mobile Robot for \u3ci\u3eIn Vivo\u3c/i\u3e Fluoroscopy of Human Joints during Natural Movements

    In this dissertation, the modeling, analysis and control of a multi-degree of freedom (mdof) robotic fluoroscope was investigated. A prototype robotic fluoroscope exists, and consists of a 3 dof mobile platform with two 2 dof Cartesian manipulators mounted symmetrically on opposite sides of the platform. One Cartesian manipulator positions the x-ray generator and the other Cartesian manipulator positions the x-ray imaging device. The robotic fluoroscope is used to x-ray skeletal joints of interest of human subjects performing natural movement activities. In order to collect the data, the Cartesian manipulators must keep the x-ray generation and imaging devices accurately aligned while dynamically tracking the desired skeletal joint of interest. In addition to the joint tracking, this also requires the robotic platform to move along with the subject, allowing the manipulators to operate within their ranges of motion. A comprehensive dynamic model of the robotic fluoroscope prototype was created, incorporating the dynamic coupling of the system. Empirical data collected from an RGB-D camera were used to create a human kinematic model that can be used to simulate the joint of interest target dynamics. This model was incorporated into a computer simulation that was validated by comparing the simulation results with actual prototype experiments using the same human kinematic model inputs. The computer simulation was used in a comprehensive dynamic analysis of the prototype and in the development and evaluation of sensing, control, and signal processing approaches that optimize the subject and joint tracking performance characteristics. The modeling and simulation results were used to develop real-time control strategies, including decoupling techniques that reduce tracking error on the prototype. For a normal walking activity, the joint tracking error was less than 20 mm, and the subject tracking error was less than 140 mm

    Robot Assisted Shoulder Rehabilitation: Biomechanical Modelling, Design and Performance Evaluation

    The upper limb rehabilitation robots have made it possible to improve the motor recovery in stroke survivors while reducing the burden on physical therapists. Compared to manual arm training, robot-supported training can be more intensive, of longer duration, repetitive and task-oriented. To be aligned with the most biomechanically complex joint of human body, the shoulder, specific considerations have to be made in the design of robotic shoulder exoskeletons. It is important to assist all shoulder degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) when implementing robotic exoskeletons for rehabilitation purposes to increase the range of motion (ROM) and avoid any joint axes misalignments between the robot and human’s shoulder that cause undesirable interaction forces and discomfort to the user. The main objective of this work is to design a safe and a robotic exoskeleton for shoulder rehabilitation with physiologically correct movements, lightweight modules, self-alignment characteristics and large workspace. To achieve this goal a comprehensive review of the existing shoulder rehabilitation exoskeletons is conducted first to outline their main advantages and disadvantages, drawbacks and limitations. The research has then focused on biomechanics of the human shoulder which is studied in detail using robotic analysis techniques, i.e. the human shoulder is modelled as a mechanism. The coupled constrained structure of the robotic exoskeleton connected to a human shoulder is considered as a hybrid human-robot mechanism to solve the problem of joint axes misalignments. Finally, a real-scale prototype of the robotic shoulder rehabilitation exoskeleton was built to test its operation and its ability for shoulder rehabilitation

    Stability analysis of non-holonomic inverted pendulum system

    The inverted pendulum is doubtlessly one of the most famous control problems found in most control text books and laboratories worldwide. This popularity comes from the fact that the inverted pendulum exhibits nonlinear, unstable and non-minimum phase dynamics. The basic control objective of the study is to design a controller in order to maintain the upright position of the pendulum while also controlling the position of the cart. In our study we explored the relationship that the tuning parameters (weight on the position of the car and the angle that the pendulum makes with the vertical) of a classical inverted pendulum on a cart has on the pole placement and hence on the stability of the system. We then present a family of curves showing the local root-locus and develop relationships between the weight changes and the system performance. We describe how these locus trends provide insight that is useful to the control designer during the effort to optimize the system performance. Finally, we use our general results to design an effective feedback controller for a new system with a longer pendulum, and present experiment results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our analysis. We then designed a simulation-based study to determine the stability characteristics of a holonomic inverted pendulum system. Here we decoupled the system using geometry as two independent one dimensional inverted pendulum and observed that the system can be stabilized using this method successfully with and without noise added to the system. Next, we designed a linear system for the highly complex inverted pendulum on a non-holonomic cart system. Overall, the findings will provide valuable input to the controller designers for a wide range of applications including tuning of the controller parameters to design of a linear controller for nonlinear systems
