Parallel machine architecture and compiler design facilities
The objective is to provide an integrated simulation environment for studying and evaluating various issues in designing parallel systems, including machine architectures, parallelizing compiler techniques, and parallel algorithms. The status of Delta project (which objective is to provide a facility to allow rapid prototyping of parallelized compilers that can target toward different machine architectures) is summarized. Included are the surveys of the program manipulation tools developed, the environmental software supporting Delta, and the compiler research projects in which Delta has played a role
Improvements in estimating proportions of objects from multispectral data
Methods for estimating proportions of objects and materials imaged within the instantaneous field of view of a multispectral sensor were developed further. Improvements in the basic proportion estimation algorithm were devised as well as improved alien object detection procedures. Also, a simplified signature set analysis scheme was introduced for determining the adequacy of signature set geometry for satisfactory proportion estimation. Averaging procedures used in conjunction with the mixtures algorithm were examined theoretically and applied to artificially generated multispectral data. A computationally simpler estimator was considered and found unsatisfactory. Experiments conducted to find a suitable procedure for setting the alien object threshold yielded little definitive result. Mixtures procedures were used on a limited amount of ERTS data to estimate wheat proportion in selected areas. Results were unsatisfactory, partly because of the ill-conditioned nature of the pure signature set

Exploiting a perdurantist foundational ontology and graph database for semantic data integration
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University London.The view of reality that is inherent to perdurantist philosophical ontologies, often termed four dimensional (4D) ontologies, has not been widely adopted within the mainstream of information system design practice. However, as the closed world of enterprise systems is opened to Internet scale Semantic Web and Open Data information sources, there is a need to better understand the semantics of both internal and external data and how they can be integrated. Philosophical foundational ontologies can help establish this understanding and there is, therefore, an emerging need to research how they can be applied to the problem of semantic data integration. Therefore, a prime objective of this research was to develop a framework through which to apply a 4D foundational ontology and a graph database to the problem of semantic data integration, and to assess the effectiveness of the approach. The research employed design science, a methodology which is applicable to undertaking research within information systems as it encompasses methods through which the research can be undertaken and the resultant artefacts evaluated. This methodology has a number of discrete stages: problem awareness; a core design-build-evaluate iterative cycle through which the research is conducted; and a conclusion stage. The design science research was conducted through the development of a number of artefacts, the prime being the 4D-Semantic Extract Load (4D-SETL) framework. The effectiveness of the framework was assessed by applying it to semantically interpret and integrate a number of large scale datasets and to instantiate a prototype graph database warehouse to persist the resultant ontology. A series of technical experiments confirmed that directly reflecting the model patterns of 4D ontology within a prototype data warehouse proved an effective means of both structuring and semantically integrating complex datasets and that the artefacts produced by 4D-SETL could function at scale. Through illustrative scenario, the effectiveness of the approach is described in relation to the ability of the framework to address a number of weaknesses in current approaches. Furthermore the major advantages of the 4D-SETL are elaborated; which include ability of the framework is to combine foundational, domain and instance level ontological models in a single coherent system that dispensed with much of the translation normally undertaken between conceptual, logical and physical data models. Approaches to High-Level Programming and Prototyping of Concurrent Applications
Concurrent programming is conceptually harder to undertake and to understand than sequential programming, because a programmer has to manage the coexistence and coordination of multiple concurrent activities. To alleviate this task several high-level approaches to concurrent programming have been developed. For some high-level programming approaches, prototyping for facilitating early evaluation of new ideas is a central goal. Prototyping is used to explore the essential features of a proposed system through practical experimentation before its actual implementation to make the correct design choices early in the process of software development. Approaches to prototyping concurrent applications with very high-level programming systems intend to alleviate the development of parallel algorithms in quite different ways. Early experimentation with alternate design choices or problem decompositions for concurrent applications is suggested to make concurrent programming easier. This paper presents a survey of approaches to high-level programming and prototyping of concurrent applications to review the state of the art in this area.
