    Advances in Human-Robot Interaction

    Rapid advances in the field of robotics have made it possible to use robots not just in industrial automation but also in entertainment, rehabilitation, and home service. Since robots will likely affect many aspects of human existence, fundamental questions of human-robot interaction must be formulated and, if at all possible, resolved. Some of these questions are addressed in this collection of papers by leading HRI researchers

    Enhancing tele-operation - Investigating the effect of sensory feedback on performance

    The decline in the number of healthcare service providers in comparison to the growing numbers of service users prompts the development of technologies to improve the efficiency of healthcare services. One such technology which could offer support are assistive robots, remotely tele-operated to provide assistive care and support for older adults with assistive care needs and people living with disabilities. Tele-operation makes it possible to provide human-in-the-loop robotic assistance while also addressing safety concerns in the use of autonomous robots around humans. Unlike many other applications of robot tele-operation, safety is particularly significant as the tele-operated assistive robots will be used in close proximity to vulnerable human users. It is therefore important to provide as much information about the robot (and the robot workspace) as possible to the tele-operators to ensure safety, as well as efficiency. Since robot tele-operation is relatively unexplored in the context of assisted living, this thesis explores different feedback modalities that may be employed to communicate sensor information to tele-operators. The thesis presents research as it transitioned from identifying and evaluating additional feedback modalities that may be used to supplement video feedback, to exploring different strategies for communicating the different feedback modalities. Due to the fact that some of the sensors and feedback needed are not readily available, different design iterations were carried out to develop the necessary hardware and software for the studies carried out. The first human study was carried out to investigate the effect of feedback on tele-operator performance. Performance was measured in terms of task completion time, ease of use of the system, number of robot joint movements, and success or failure of the task. The effect of verbal feedback between the tele-operator and service users was also investigated. Feedback modalities have differing effects on performance metrics and as a result, the choice of optimal feedback may vary from task to task. Results show that participants preferred scenarios with verbal feedback relative to scenarios without verbal feedback, which also reflects in their performance. Gaze metrics from the study also showed that it may be possible to understand how tele-operators interact with the system based on their areas of interest as they carry out tasks. This findings suggest that such studies can be used to improve the design of tele-operation systems.The need for social interaction between the tele-operator and service user suggests that visual and auditory feedback modalities will be engaged as tasks are carried out. This further reduces the number of available sensory modalities through which information can be communicated to tele-operators. A wrist-worn Wi-Fi enabled haptic feedback device was therefore developed and a study was carried out to investigate haptic sensitivities across the wrist. Results suggest that different locations on the wrist have varying sensitivities to haptic stimulation with and without video distraction, duration of haptic stimulation, and varying amplitudes of stimulation. This suggests that dynamic control of haptic feedback can be used to improve haptic perception across the wrist, and it may also be possible to display more than one type of sensor data to tele-operators during a task. The final study carried out was designed to investigate if participants can differentiate between different types of sensor data conveyed through different locations on the wrist via haptic feedback. The effect of increased number of attempts on performance was also investigated. Total task completion time decreased with task repetition. Participants with prior gaming and robot experience had a more significant reduction in total task completion time when compared to participants without prior gaming and robot experience. Reduction in task completion time was noticed for all stages of the task but participants with additional feedback had higher task completion time than participants without supplementary feedback. Reduction in task completion time varied for different stages of the task. Even though gripper trajectory reduced with task repetition, participants with supplementary feedback had longer gripper trajectories than participants without supplementary feedback, while participants with prior gaming experience had shorter gripper trajectories than participants without prior gaming experience. Perceived workload was also found to reduce with task repetition but perceived workload was higher for participants with feedback reported higher perceived workload than participants without feedback. However participants without feedback reported higher frustration than participants without feedback.Results show that the effect of feedback may not be significant where participants can get necessary information from video feedback. However, participants were fully dependent on feedback when video feedback could not provide requisite information needed.The findings presented in this thesis have potential applications in healthcare, and other applications of robot tele-operation and feedback. Findings can be used to improve feedback designs for tele-operation systems to ensure safe and efficient tele-operation. The thesis also provides ways visual feedback can be used with other feedback modalities. The haptic feedback designed in this research may also be used to provide situational awareness for the visually impaired

    Cognitive-developmental learning for a humanoid robot : a caregiver's gift

The humanoid robot therefore sees the world through the caregiver's eyes. Building an artificial humanoid robot's brain, even at an infant's cognitive level, has been a long quest which still lies only in the realm of our imagination. Our efforts towards such a dimly imaginable task are developed according to two alternate and complementary views: cognitive and developmental.The goal of this work is to build a cognitive system for the humanoid robot, Cog, that exploits human caregivers as catalysts to perceive and learn about actions, objects, scenes, people, and the robot itself. This thesis addresses a broad spectrum of machine learning problems across several categorization levels. Actions by embodied agents are used to automatically generate training data for the learning mechanisms, so that the robot develops categorization autonomously. Taking inspiration from the human brain, a framework of algorithms and methodologies was implemented to emulate different cognitive capabilities on the humanoid robot Cog. This framework is effectively applied to a collection of AI, computer vision, and signal processing problems. Cognitive capabilities of the humanoid robot are developmentally created, starting from infant-like abilities for detecting, segmenting, and recognizing percepts over multiple sensing modalities. Human caregivers provide a helping hand for communicating such information to the robot. This is done by actions that create meaningful events (by changing the world in which the robot is situated) thus inducing the "compliant perception" of objects from these human-robot interactions. Self-exploration of the world extends the robot's knowledge concerning object properties. This thesis argues for enculturating humanoid robots using infant development as a metaphor for building a humanoid robot's cognitive abilities. A human caregiver redesigns a humanoid's brain by teaching the humanoid robot as she would teach a child, using children's learning aids such as books, drawing boards, or other cognitive artifacts.     Electromyography Based Human-Robot Interfaces for the Control of Artificial Hands and Wearable Devices

    The design of robotic systems is currently facing human-inspired solutions as a road to replicate the human ability and flexibility in performing motor tasks. Especially for control and teleoperation purposes, the human-in-the-loop approach is a key element within the framework know as Human-Robot Interface. This thesis reports the research activity carried out for the design of Human-Robot Interfaces based on the detection of human motion intentions from surface electromyography. The main goal was to investigate intuitive and natural control solutions for the teleoperation of both robotic hands during grasping tasks and wearable devices during elbow assistive applications. The design solutions are based on the human motor control principles and surface electromyography interpretation, which are reviewed with emphasis on the concept of synergies. The electromyography based control strategies for the robotic hand grasping and the wearable device assistance are also reviewed. The contribution of this research for the control of artificial hands rely on the integration of different levels of the motor control synergistic organization, and on the combination of proportional control and machine learning approaches under the guideline of user-centred intuitiveness in the Human-Robot Interface design specifications. From the side of the wearable devices, the control of a novel upper limb assistive device based on the Twisted String Actuation concept is faced. The contribution regards the assistance of the elbow during load lifting tasks, exploring a simplification in the use of the surface electromyography within the design of the Human-Robot Interface.     The Effects of Visual Affordances and Feedback on a Gesture-based Interaction with Novice Users

    This dissertation studies the roles and effects of visual affordances and feedback in a general-purpose gesture interface for novice users. Gesture interfaces are popularly viewed as intuitive and user-friendly modes of interacting with computers and robots, but they in fact introduce many challenges for users not already familiar with the system. Affordances and feedback – two fundamental building blocks of interface design – are perfectly suited to address the most important challenges and questions for novices using a gesture interface: what can they do? how do they do it? are they being understood? has anything gone wrong? Yet gesture interfaces rarely incorporate these features in a deliberate manner, and there are presently no well-adopted guidelines for designing affordances and feedback for gesture interaction, nor any clear understanding of their effects on such an interaction. A general-purpose gesture interaction system was developed based on a virtual touchscreen paradigm, and guided by a novel gesture interaction framework. This framework clarifies the relationship between gesture interfaces and the application interfaces they support, and it provides guidance for selecting and designing appropriate affordances and feedback. Using this gesture system, a 40-person (all novices) user study was conducted to evaluate the effects on interaction performance and user satisfaction of four categories of affordances and feedback. The experimental results demonstrated that affordances indicating how to do something in a gesture interaction are more important to interaction performance than affordances indicating what can be done, and also that system status is more important than feedback acknowledging user actions. However, the experiments also showed unexpectedly high interaction performance when affordances and feedback were omitted. The explanation for this result remains an open question, though several potential causes are analyzed, and a tentative interpretation is provided. The main contributions of this dissertation to the HRI and HCI research communities are 1) the design of a virtual touchscreen-based interface for general-purpose gesture interaction, to serve as a case study for identifying and designing affordances and feedback for gesture interfaces; 2) the method and surprising results of an evaluation of distinct affordance and feedback categories, in particular their effects on a gesture interaction with novice users; and 3) a set of guidelines and insights about the relationship between a user, a gesture interface, and a generic application interface, centered on a novel interaction framework that may be used to design and study other gesture systems. In addition to the intellectual contributions, this work is useful to the general public because it may influence how future assistive robots are designed to interact with people in various settings including search and rescue, healthcare and elderly care
