    A new rotary actuator capable of rapid motion using an antagonistic cam mechanism

    Animals can achieve agile behaviors such as jumping and throwing in addition to flexible behaviors with the same musculoskeletal systems, and those movements can extend the range of their activities. We have been working on actuators capable of rapid and flexible motions learning the musculoskeletal systems. In this paper, we propose a new rotary actuator using a pair of motors, springs, and cams to perform three functions, namely, normal motion, rapid or instantaneous motion, and rigidity control using an antagonistic cam mechanism, and describe the operating principle of the proposed mechanism, the mathematical model of the mechanism during rapid motion, and the design principle of the cam, which is a key mechanical element in this mechanism. Finally, we present an analysis of the error between the theoretical the measurement results during rapid motion

    Impact Testing of Different Materials on Wheels Used in Throwable Unmanned Ground Vehicles

    Throwable Unmanned Ground Vehicles are light weight, small size, easily deployable and impact resistive vehicles mainly used in domestic as well as in military purposes where human life is compromised such as inspection of sewage pipes, and search and rescue operations etc. Main challenge while considering a Throwable UGV is its impact absorption capability which is seen through its material properties. Wheels of Throwable UGV absorb most of the impact without harming the internal structure. To solve this problem a honeycomb structured wheel is designed and simulated in ANSYS Workbench. Vulcanized rubber and Plastic composite PCTPE material wheels were impact tested using explicit dynamic analysis tool in ANSYS workbench. Total deformation, equivalent stress and strain results are tested in ANSYS under impact testing of wheel which is dropped from 10 meter height with velocity of 14m/s in a concrete surface. A plastic composite material PCTPE was 3D-printed and was used in Throwable Unmanned Ground Vehicle

    Support polygon in the hybrid legged-wheeled CENTAURO robot: modelling and control

    Search for the robot capable to perform well in the real-world has sparked an interest in the hybrid locomotion systems. The hybrid legged-wheeled robots combine the advantages of the standard legged and wheeled platforms by switching between the quick and efficient wheeled motion on the flat grounds and the more versatile legged mobility on the unstructured terrains. With the locomotion flexibility offered by the hybrid mobility and appropriate control tools, these systems have high potential to excel in practical applications adapting effectively to real-world during locomanipuation operations. In contrary to their standard well-studied counterparts, kinematics of this newer type of robotic platforms has not been fully understood yet. This gap may lead to unexpected results when the standard locomotion methods are applied to hybrid legged-wheeled robots. To better understand mobility of the hybrid legged-wheeled robots, the model that describes the support polygon of a general hybrid legged-wheeled robot as a function of the wheel angular velocities without assumptions on the robot kinematics or wheel camber angle is proposed and analysed in this thesis. Based on the analysis of the developed support polygon model, a robust omnidirectional driving scheme has been designed. A continuous wheel motion is resolved through the Inverse Kinematics (IK) scheme, which generates robot motion compliant with the Non-Sliding Pure-Rolling (NSPR) condition. A higher-level scheme resolving a steering motion to comply with the non-holonomic constraint and to tackle the structural singularity is proposed. To improve the robot performance in presence to the unpredicted circumstances, the IK scheme has been enhanced with the introduction of a new reactive support polygon adaptation task. To this end, a novel quadratic programming task has been designed to push the system Support Polygon Vertices (SPVs) away from the robot Centre of Mass (CoM), while respecting the leg workspace limits. The proposed task has been expressed through the developed SPV model to account for the hardware limits. The omnidirectional driving and reactive control schemes have been verified in the simulation and hardware experiments. To that end, the simulator for the CENTAURO robot that models the actuation dynamics and the software framework for the locomotion research have been developed

    Rapid acceleration of legged robots: a pneumatic approach

    For robotics to be useful to the public in a multifaceted manner, they need to be both legged and agile. The legged constraint arises as many environments and systems in our world are tailored to ablebodied adults. Therefore, a practically useful robot would need to have the same morphology for maximum efficacy. For robots to be useful in these environments, they need to perform at least as well as humans, therefore presenting the agility constraint. These requirements have been out of reach of the field until recently. The aim of this thesis was to design a planar monopod robot for rapid acceleration manoeuvres, that could later be expanded to a planar quadruped robot. This was achieved through a hybrid electric and pneumatic actuation system. To this end, modelling schemes for the pneumatic cylinder were investigated and verified with physical experiments. This was done to develop accurate models of the pneumatic system that were later used in simulation to aid in the design of the platform. The design of the platform was aided through the use of Simulink to conduct iterative testing and multivariate evaluations using Monte Carlo simulation methods. Once the topology of the leg was set, the detail design was conducted in Solidworks and validated with its built in simulation functions. In addition to the mechanical design of the platform, a specialist boom was designed. The design needed to compensate for the forces the robot exerts on the boom as well as the material constraints on the boom. This resulted in the development of a cable-stayed, four bar mechanism boom system. An embedded operating system was created to control the robot and take in and fuse sensor inputs. This was run using multiple sensors, sub-controllers and microcontrollers. Sensor fusion for the system was done using a Kalman Filter to improve readings and estimate unmeasured states of the robot. This Kalman Filter took LiDAR and accelerometer readings as inputs to the system to produce a subcentimetre accurate position measure for the system. Finally, the completed platform was validated using fixed-body forward hopping tests. These tests showed a significant degree of similarity to the simulated results and therefore validated the design process

    A Biologically Inspired Jumping and Rolling Robot

    Mobile robots for rough terrain are of interest to researchers as their range of possible uses is large, including exploration activities for inhospitable areas on Earth and on other planets and bodies in the solar system, searching in disaster sites for survivors, and performing surveillance for military applications. Nature generally achieves land movement by walking using legs, but additional modes such as climbing, jumping and rolling are all produced from legs as well. Robotics tends not to use this integrated approach and adds additional mechanisms to achieve additional movements. The spherical device described within this thesis, called Jollbot, integrated a rolling motion for faster movement over smoother terrain, with a jumping movement for rougher environments. Jollbot was developed over three prototypes. The first achieved pause-and-leap style jumps by slowly storing strain energy within the metal elements of a spherical structure using an internal mechanism to deform the sphere. A jump was produced when this stored energy was rapidly released. The second prototype achieved greater jump heights using a similar structure, and added direction control to each jump by moving its centre of gravity around the polar axis of the sphere. The final prototype successfully combined rolling (at a speed of 0.7 m/s, up 4° slopes, and over 44 mm obstacles) and jumping (0.5 m cleared height), both with direction control, using a 0.6 m spherical spring steel structure. Rolling was achieved by moving the centre of gravity outside of the sphere’s contact area with the ground. Jumping was achieved by deflecting the sphere in a similar method to the first and second prototypes, but through a larger percentage deflection. An evaluation of existing rough terrain robots is made possible through the development of a five-step scoring system that produces a single numerical performance score.     Bioinspired Jumping Locomotion for Miniature Robotics

    In nature, many small animals use jumping locomotion to move in rough terrain. Compared to other modes of ground locomotion, jumping allows an animal to overcome obstacles that are relatively large compared to its size. In this thesis we outline the main design challenges that need to be addressed when building miniature jumping robots. We then present three novel robotic jumpers that solve those challenges and outperform existing similar jumping robots by one order of magnitude with regard to jumping height per size and weight. The robots presented in this thesis, called EPFL jumper v1, EPFL jumper v2 and EPFL jumper v3 have a weight between 7g and 14.3g and are able to jump up to 27 times their own size, with onboard energy and control. This high jumping performance is achieved by using the same mechanical design principles as found in jumping insects such as locusts or fleas. Further, we present a theoretical model which allows an evaluation whether the addition of wings could potentially allow a jumping robot to prolong its jumps. The results from the model and the experiments with a winged jumping robot indicate that for miniature robots, adding wings is not worthwhile when moving on ground. However, when jumping from an elevated starting position, adding wings can lead to longer distances traveled compared to jumping without wings. Moreover, it can reduce the kinetic energy on impact which needs to be absorbed by the robot structure. Based on this conclusion, we developed the EPFL jumpglider, the first miniature jumping and gliding robot that has been presented so far.
