    The use of Natural Language Processing techniques to support Health Literacy: an evidence-based review

    Background and objectives: To conduct a literature search and analysis of the existing research using natural language processing for improving or helping health literacy, as well as to discuss the importance and potentials of addressing both fields in a joint manner. This review targets researchers who are unfamiliar with natural language processing in the field of health literacy, and in general, any researcher, regardless of his or her background, interested in multi-disciplinary research involving technology and health care. Methods: We introduce the concepts of health literacy and natural language processing. Then, a thorough search is performed using relevant databases and well-defined criteria. We review the existing literature addressing these topics, both in an independent and joint manner, and provide an overview of the state of the art using natural language processing in health literacy. We additionally discuss how the different issues in health literacy that are related to the comprehension of specialised health texts can be improved using natural language processing techniques, and the challenges involved in these processes. Results: The search process yielded 235 potential relevant references, 49 of which fully fulfilled the established search criteria, and therefore they were later analysed in more detail.     The Effect of Digital Media on Emergent Literacy Skills: A Systematic Review

    This review examines the effectiveness of digital media on emergent literacy skills, specifically alphabet knowledge, print awareness, and phonological awareness, on children birth to four. A systematic search of the literature identified 13 studies that met the pre-determined inclusion criteria. Two independent raters evaluated each study for methodological quality and assigned appropriate levels of evidence based on ASHA levels of evidence. Results found that specific features of digital media can lead to positive effects on emergent literacy skills. A checklist with the highlighted features was created to guide clinicians, parents, and others in making decisions about the true educational quality of various screen media

    A Health eLearning Ontology and Procedural Reasoning Approach for Developing Personalized Courses to Teach Patients about Their Medical Condition and Treatment

    We propose a methodological framework to support the development of personalized courses that improve patients’ understanding of their condition and prescribed treatment. Inspired by Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs), the framework uses an eLearning ontology to express domain and learner models and to create a course. We combine the ontology with a procedural reasoning approach and precompiled plans to operationalize a design across disease conditions. The resulting courses generated by the framework are personalized across four patient axes—condition and treatment, comprehension level, learning style based on the VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/write, Kinesthetic) presentation model, and the level of understanding of specific course content according to Bloom’s taxonomy. Customizing educational materials along these learning axes stimulates and sustains patients’ attention when learning about their conditions or treatment options. Our proposed framework creates a personalized course that prepares patients for their meetings with specialists and educates them about their prescribed treatment. We posit that the improvement in patients’ understanding of prescribed care will result in better outcomes and we validate that the constructs of our framework are appropriate for representing content and deriving personalized courses for two use cases: anticoagulation treatment of an atrial fibrillation patient and lower back pain management to treat a lumbar degenerative disc condition. We conduct a mostly qualitative study supported by a quantitative questionnaire to investigate the acceptability of the framework among the target patient population and medical practitioners

    Evaluation of an eBook for Oral Health Literacy© to Promote Child Health: Readability, Suitability, Understandability, Actionability, and Gist-Based Message

    The purpose of the study was to evaluate an oral health curriculum called an eBook for Oral Health Literacy© to determine its effectiveness for promoting child health. A secondary purpose was to describe and explain the design characteristics of readability, suitability, understandability, and actionability of the 17 chapters of the eBook. A third purpose was to conduct evaluations on verbatim representations (or literal facts) that are presented in the eBook chapters, including the gist representations that are not explicitly presented but inferred by the reader from the chapter information. Results found that the eBook for Oral Health Literacy© had acceptable, and in many cases, favorable scores, for the five design elements of readability, suitability, understandability, actionability, and gist comprehension. Ongoing dissemination of the eBook for Oral Health Literacy© curriculum has the potential to boost children who are “learning to read” and “reading to learn” about oral health hygiene and nutrition. Future studies should use one or more chapters from the curriculum as an intervention to test this educational premise as an explanatory basis for functional health literacy

    PROGRAM EVALUATION OF READING PLUS : STUDY OF THE IMPACT ON READING ACHIEVEMENT FOR NINTH-GRADE STUDENTS IN MOORE COUNTY SCHOOLS

    The following is a program evaluation of the Reading Plus program in Moore County Schools from southern North Carolina and its impact on reading achievement for ninth-grade students. Reading Plus is a valuable asset that may be utilized to increase student ability to read. The Reading Plus program increases the degree of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, reading stamina, comprehension, character recognition and recall, vocabulary acquisition skills, and Lexile levels of students when the program is implemented with fidelity. The results of this study show that students who spent sufficient time on task, with each component of the program, demonstrated growth in all the areas mentioned above. Teachers who implemented this pilot were overwhelmingly pleased with the student outcomes and the program itself. The outcomes of this program evaluation were so impressive that the Reading Plus program is now being implemented at Riverside High School in Durham Public Schools, located in central North Carolina
