Facial Asymmetry Analysis Based on 3-D Dynamic Scans
Facial dysfunction is a fundamental symptom which often relates to many neurological illnesses, such as stroke, Bell’s palsy, Parkinson’s disease, etc. The current methods for detecting and assessing facial dysfunctions mainly rely on the trained practitioners which have significant limitations as they are often subjective. This paper presents a computer-based methodology of facial asymmetry analysis which aims for automatically detecting facial dysfunctions. The method is based on dynamic 3-D scans of human faces. The preliminary evaluation results testing on facial sequences from Hi4D-ADSIP database suggest that the proposed method is able to assist in the quantification and diagnosis of facial dysfunctions for neurological patients
A Low Temperature Nonlinear Optical Rotational Anisotropy Spectrometer for the Determination of Crystallographic and Electronic Symmetries
Nonlinear optical generation from a crystalline material can reveal the
symmetries of both its lattice structure and underlying ordered electronic
phases and can therefore be exploited as a complementary technique to
diffraction based scattering probes. Although this technique has been
successfully used to study the lattice and magnetic structures of systems such
as semiconductor surfaces, multiferroic crystals, magnetic thin films and
multilayers, challenging technical requirements have prevented its application
to the plethora of complex electronic phases found in strongly correlated
electron systems. These requirements include an ability to probe small bulk
single crystals at the micron length scale, a need for sensitivity to the
entire nonlinear optical susceptibility tensor, oblique light incidence
reflection geometry and incident light frequency tunability among others. These
measurements are further complicated by the need for extreme sample
environments such as ultra low temperatures, high magnetic fields or high
pressures. In this review we present a novel experimental construction using a
rotating light scattering plane that meets all the aforementioned requirements.
We demonstrate the efficacy of our scheme by making symmetry measurements on a
micron scale facet of a small bulk single crystal of SrIrO using
optical second and third harmonic generation.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

Image processing for plastic surgery planning
This thesis presents some image processing tools for plastic surgery planning. In particular,
it presents a novel method that combines local and global context in a probabilistic
relaxation framework to identify cephalometric landmarks used in Maxillofacial plastic
surgery. It also uses a method that utilises global and local symmetry to identify abnormalities
in CT frontal images of the human body. The proposed methodologies are
evaluated with the help of several clinical data supplied by collaborating plastic surgeons
Innerspec: Technical Report
In this report we describe “InnerSpec”, an approach for symmetric object detection that is based both on the com- putation of a symmetry measure for each pixel and on gra- dient information analysis. The symmetry value is obtained as the energy balance of the even-odd decomposition of an oriented square patch with respect to its central axis. Such an operation is akin to the computation of a row-wise con- volution in the midpoint. The candidate symmetry axes are then identified through the localization of peaks along the direction perpendicular to each considered angle. These axes are finally evaluated by computing the image gradient in their neighborhood, in particular checking whether the gradient information displays specular characteristics
