Functional requirements document for the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Scientific Computing Facilities (SCF) of the NASA/MSFC Earth Science and Applications Division, 1992

Five scientists at MSFC/ESAD have EOS SCF investigator status. Each SCF has unique tasks which require the establishment of a computing facility dedicated to accomplishing those tasks. A SCF Working Group was established at ESAD with the charter of defining the computing requirements of the individual SCFs and recommending options for meeting these requirements. The primary goal of the working group was to determine which computing needs can be satisfied using either shared resources or separate but compatible resources, and which needs require unique individual resources. The requirements investigated included CPU-intensive vector and scalar processing, visualization, data storage, connectivity, and I/O peripherals. A review of computer industry directions and a market survey of computing hardware provided information regarding important industry standards and candidate computing platforms. It was determined that the total SCF computing requirements might be most effectively met using a hierarchy consisting of shared and individual resources. This hierarchy is composed of five major system types: (1) a supercomputer class vector processor; (2) a high-end scalar multiprocessor workstation; (3) a file server; (4) a few medium- to high-end visualization workstations; and (5) several low- to medium-range personal graphics workstations. Specific recommendations for meeting the needs of each of these types are presented

Implementing a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure at the District of North Vancouver

    Get PDF
The District of North Vancouver (DNV) will be undergoing a district-wide desktop replacement project in 2012. This paper describes the technological and functional details of a virtualized desktop infrastructure (VDI) at DNV and analyses the expected alignment of a VDI implementation with DNV organizational goals relative to other strategic alternatives. As VDI is found to be the most appropriate alternative for the desktop replacement project, VDI vendors and solutions available on the market are explored and recommendations are made on the most appropriate VDI solutions for the organization. The VDI vendor selection is determined by using DNV specific criteria that include financial and functional requirements of the organization. In addition to presenting a VDI solution, the paper presents an implementation plan overview that will aid in a successful VDI deployment and adoption

IBM\u27s OS/2 Warp and its International Strategy

It is my intention, through the research in this thesis to present problems and solutions to normal business and marketing decisions that take place on a day-to-day basis in IBM Corporation. Also, OS/2 new version named Warp will be studied to an extent. OS/2 version 3 is not only a multitasking, multiprocessing operating system, but is also is IBM\u27s most recent and advance piece of software they have ever produce. It is a world of choices. Just as IBM hopes OS/2 warp will fulfill users operating systems needs, I will try to fulfill the needs of IBM to release a better product compare to Microsoft and also the changes IBM could do to dominate the market. There are a lot of choices these days when deciding which operating system to trust your data to, just as there are many studies conducted on how the operating system would perform in the marketplace. Whether people are just beginning, are familiar with computers, or have lots of technical expertise, what is on these pages might open the minds of some people on how to conduct regular business. This Thesis is divided into different sections as explained in the Table of Content. Section 1 is the Introduction: These sections explain in advance what IBM OS/2 Warp is. Section 2 is IBM Corporation: In this section, details of IBM and the company\u27s product line and annual sales are included. Section 3 is OS/2 and OS/2 Warp: This section explains the differences between new and old version and details of both. Section 4 is IBM Business Strategy. Section 5 is IBM\u27s Marketing Strategy. Finally, conclusion and references follow

The future of social is personal: the potential of the personal data store

    No full text
This chapter argues that technical architectures that facilitate the longitudinal, decentralised and individual-centric personal collection and curation of data will be an important, but partial, response to the pressing problem of the autonomy of the data subject, and the asymmetry of power between the subject and large scale service providers/data consumers. Towards framing the scope and role of such Personal Data Stores (PDSes), the legalistic notion of personal data is examined, and it is argued that a more inclusive, intuitive notion expresses more accurately what individuals require in order to preserve their autonomy in a data-driven world of large aggregators. Six challenges towards realising the PDS vision are set out: the requirement to store data for long periods; the difficulties of managing data for individuals; the need to reconsider the regulatory basis for third-party access to data; the need to comply with international data handling standards; the need to integrate privacy-enhancing technologies; and the need to future-proof data gathering against the evolution of social norms. The open experimental PDS platform INDX is introduced and described, as a means of beginning to address at least some of these six challenges

The Macintosh Professionals: Crises in Industrial Lore and Fan Reception of Apple\u27s Desktop Computers

This thesis uses industrial discourse analysis and fan studies to posit that fandom has the power to intervene in moments when producers and brands thwart expectations generated by industrial lore. Steve Jobsā€™ ā€œFour Quadrantsā€ strategy became a crucial piece of Appleā€™s industrial lore is shown to influence the expectations of Apple fans. Negative fan reactions to new product launches will be used to demonstrate the impact of said lore and the openings it creates for dissent. Analysis of the industrial discourse surrounding the discontinued iMac Pro and redesigned Mac Pro determines the efficacy of fan interventions in eliciting a concession from Apple
