    Inter-Coder Agreement for Computational Linguistics

    This article is a survey of methods for measuring agreement among corpus annotators. It exposes the mathematics and underlying assumptions of agreement coefficients, covering Krippendorff's alpha as well as Scott's pi and Cohen's kappa; discusses the use of coefficients in several annotation tasks; and argues that weighted, alpha-like coefficients, traditionally less used than kappa-like measures in computational linguistics, may be more appropriate for many corpus annotation tasksā€”but that their use makes the interpretation of the value of the coefficient even harder. </jats:p

    Thirty years of Artificial Intelligence and Law:the second decade

    The first issue of Artificial Intelligence and Law journal was published in 1992. This paper provides commentaries on nine significant papers drawn from the Journalā€™s second decade. Four of the papers relate to reasoning with legal cases, introducing contextual considerations, predicting outcomes on the basis of natural language descriptions of the cases, comparing different ways of representing cases, and formalising precedential reasoning. One introduces a method of analysing arguments that was to become very widely used in AI and Law, namely argumentation schemes. Two relate to ontologies for the representation of legal concepts and two take advantage of the increasing availability of legal corpora in this decade, to automate document summarisation and for the mining of arguments

    Evaluating Information Retrieval and Access Tasks

    This open access book summarizes the first two decades of the NII Testbeds and Community for Information access Research (NTCIR). NTCIR is a series of evaluation forums run by a global team of researchers and hosted by the National Institute of Informatics (NII), Japan. The book is unique in that it discusses not just what was done at NTCIR, but also how it was done and the impact it has achieved. For example, in some chapters the reader sees the early seeds of what eventually grew to be the search engines that provide access to content on the World Wide Web, todayā€™s smartphones that can tailor what they show to the needs of their owners, and the smart speakers that enrich our lives at home and on the move. We also get glimpses into how new search engines can be built for mathematical formulae, or for the digital record of a lived human life. Key to the success of the NTCIR endeavor was early recognition that information access research is an empirical discipline and that evaluation therefore lay at the core of the enterprise. Evaluation is thus at the heart of each chapter in this book. They show, for example, how the recognition that some documents are more important than others has shaped thinking about evaluation design. The thirty-three contributors to this volume speak for the many hundreds of researchers from dozens of countries around the world who together shaped NTCIR as organizers and participants.     Answering complex questions : supervised approaches

    x, 108 leaves : ill. ; 29 cmThe term ā€œGoogleā€ has become a verb for most of us. Search engines, however, have certain limitations. For example ask it for the impact of the current global financial crisis in different parts of the world, and you can expect to sift through thousands of results for the answer. This motivates the research in complex question answering where the purpose is to create summaries of large volumes of information as answers to complex questions, rather than simply offering a listing of sources. Unlike simple questions, complex questions cannot be answered easily as they often require inferencing and synthesizing information from multiple documents. Hence, this task is accomplished by the query-focused multidocument summarization systems. In this thesis we apply different supervised learning techniques to confront the complex question answering problem. To run our experiments, we consider the DUC-2007 main task. A huge amount of labeled data is a prerequisite for supervised training. It is expensive and time consuming when humans perform the labeling task manually. Automatic labeling can be a good remedy to this problem. We employ five different automatic annotation techniques to build extracts from human abstracts using ROUGE, Basic Element (BE) overlap, syntactic similarity measure, semantic similarity measure and Extended String Subsequence Kernel (ESSK). The representative supervised methods we use are Support Vector Machines (SVM), Conditional Random Fields (CRF), Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt). We annotate DUC-2006 data and use them to train our systems, whereas 25 topics of DUC-2007 data set are used as test data. The evaluation results reveal the impact of automatic labeling methods on the performance of the supervised approaches to complex question answering. We also experiment with two ensemble-based approaches that show promising results for this problem domain

    Machine-assisted mixed methods: augmenting humanities and social sciences with artificial intelligence

    The increasing capacities of large language models (LLMs) present an unprecedented opportunity to scale up data analytics in the humanities and social sciences, augmenting and automating qualitative analytic tasks previously typically allocated to human labor. This contribution proposes a systematic mixed methods framework to harness qualitative analytic expertise, machine scalability, and rigorous quantification, with attention to transparency and replicability. 16 machine-assisted case studies are showcased as proof of concept. Tasks include linguistic and discourse analysis, lexical semantic change detection, interview analysis, historical event cause inference and text mining, detection of political stance, text and idea reuse, genre composition in literature and film; social network inference, automated lexicography, missing metadata augmentation, and multimodal visual cultural analytics. In contrast to the focus on English in the emerging LLM applicability literature, many examples here deal with scenarios involving smaller languages and historical texts prone to digitization distortions. In all but the most difficult tasks requiring expert knowledge, generative LLMs can demonstrably serve as viable research instruments. LLM (and human) annotations may contain errors and variation, but the agreement rate can and should be accounted for in subsequent statistical modeling; a bootstrapping approach is discussed. The replications among the case studies illustrate how tasks previously requiring potentially months of team effort and complex computational pipelines, can now be accomplished by an LLM-assisted scholar in a fraction of the time. Importantly, this approach is not intended to replace, but to augment researcher knowledge and skills. With these opportunities in sight, qualitative expertise and the ability to pose insightful questions have arguably never been more critical

    JURI SAYS:An Automatic Judgement Prediction System for the European Court of Human Rights

    In this paper we present the web platform JURI SAYS that automatically predicts decisions of the European Court of Human Rights based on communicated cases, which are published by the court early in the proceedings and are often available many years before the final decision is made. Our system therefore predicts future judgements of the court. The platform is available at jurisays.com and shows the predictions compared to the actual decisions of the court. It is automatically updated every month by including the prediction for the new cases. Additionally, the system highlights the sentences and paragraphs that are most important for the prediction (i.e. violation vs. no violation of human rights)

    A Survey on Semantic Processing Techniques

    Semantic processing is a fundamental research domain in computational linguistics. In the era of powerful pre-trained language models and large language models, the advancement of research in this domain appears to be decelerating. However, the study of semantics is multi-dimensional in linguistics. The research depth and breadth of computational semantic processing can be largely improved with new technologies. In this survey, we analyzed five semantic processing tasks, e.g., word sense disambiguation, anaphora resolution, named entity recognition, concept extraction, and subjectivity detection. We study relevant theoretical research in these fields, advanced methods, and downstream applications. We connect the surveyed tasks with downstream applications because this may inspire future scholars to fuse these low-level semantic processing tasks with high-level natural language processing tasks. The review of theoretical research may also inspire new tasks and technologies in the semantic processing domain.     USING SOCIAL ANNOTATIONS TO IMPROVE WEB SEARCH

    Web-based tagging systems, which include social bookmarking systems such as Delicious, have become increasingly popular. These systems allow participants to annotate or tag web resources. This research examined the use of social annotations to improve the quality of web searches. The research involved three components. First, social annotations were used to index resources. Two annotation-based indexing methods were proposed: annotation based indexing and full text with annotation indexing. Second, social annotations were used to improve search result ranking. Six annotation based ranking methods were proposed: Popularity Count, Propagate Popularity Count, Query Weighted Popularity Count, Query Weighted Propagate Popularity Count, Match Tag Count and Normalized Match Tag Count. Third, social annotations were used to both index and rank resources. The result from the first experiment suggested that both static feature and similarity feature should be considered when using social annotations to re-rank search result. The result of the second experiment showed that using only annotation as an index of resources may not be a good idea. Since social Annotations could be viewed as a high level concept of the content, combining them to the content of resource could add some more important concepts to the resources. Last but not least, the result from the third experiment confirmed that the combination of using social annotations to rank the search result and using social annotations as resource index augmentation provided a promising rank of search results.     Discourse oriented summarization

    The meaning of text appears to be tightly related to intentions and circumstances. Context sensitivity of meaning is addressed by theories of discourse structure. Few attempts have been made to exploit text organization in summarization. This thesis is an exploration of what knowledge of discourse structure can do for content selection as a subtask of automatic summarization, and query-based summarization in particular. Query-based summarization is the task of answering an arbitrary user query or question by using content from potentially relevant sources. This thesis presents a general framework for discourse oriented summarization, relying on graphs to represent semantic relations in discourse, and redundancy as a special type of semantic relation. Semantic relations occur on several levels of text analysis (query-relevance, coherence, layout, etc.), and a broad range of textual features may be required to detect them. The graph-based framework facilitates combining multiple features into an integrated semantic model of the documents to summarize. Recognizing redundancy and entailment relations between text passages is particularly important when a summary is generated of multiple documents, e.g. to avoid including redundant content in a summary. For this reason, I pay particular attention to recognizing textual entailment. Within this framework, a three-fold evaluation is performed to evaluate different aspects of discourse oriented summarization. The first is a user study, measuring the effect on user appreciation of using a particular type of knowledge for query-based summarization. In this study, three presentation strategies are compared: summarization using the rhetorical structure of the source, a baseline summarization method which uses the layout of the source, and a baseline presentation method which uses no summarization but just a concise answer to the query. Results show that knowledge of the rhetorical structure not only helps to provide the necessary context for the user to verify that the summary addresses the query adequately, but also to increase the amount of relevant content. The second evaluation is a comparison of implementations of the graph-based framework which are capable of fully automatic summarization. The two variables in the experiment are the set of textual features used to model the source and the algorithm used to search a graph for relevant content. The features are based on cosine similarity, and are realized as graph representations of the source. The graph search algorithms are inspired by existing algorithms in summarization. The quality of summaries is measured using the Rouge evaluation toolkit. The best performer would have ranked first (Rouge-2) or second (Rouge-SU4) if it had participated in the DUC 2005 query-based summarization challenge. The third study is an evaluation in the context of the DUC 2006 summarization challenge, which includes readability measurements as well as various content-based evaluation metrics. The evaluated automatic discourse oriented summarization system is similar to the one described above, but uses additional features, i.e. layout and textual entailment. The system performed well on readability at the cost of content-based scores which were well below the scores of the highest ranking DUC 2006 participant. This indicates a trade-off between readable, coherent content and useful content, an issue yet to be explored. Previous research implies that theories of text organization generalize well to multimedia. This suggests that the discourse oriented summarization framework applies to summarizing multimedia as well, provided sufficient knowledge of the organization of the (multimedia) source documents is available. The last study in this thesis is an investigation of the applicability of structural relations in multimedia for generating picture-illustrated summaries, by relating summary content to picture-associated text (i.e. captions or surrounding paragraphs). Results suggest that captions are the more suitable annotation for selecting appropriate pictures. Compared to manual illustration, results of automatic pictures are similar if the manual picture is mainly decorative

    Unsupervised and knowledge-poor approaches to sentiment analysis

    Sentiment analysis focuses upon automatic classiffication of a document's sentiment (and more generally extraction of opinion from text). Ways of expressing sentiment have been shown to be dependent on what a document is about (domain-dependency). This complicates supervised methods for sentiment analysis which rely on extensive use of training data or linguistic resources that are usually either domain-specific or generic. Both kinds of resources prevent classiffiers from performing well across a range of domains, as this requires appropriate in-domain (domain-specific) data. This thesis presents a novel unsupervised, knowledge-poor approach to sentiment analysis aimed at creating a domain-independent and multilingual sentiment analysis system. The approach extracts domain-specific resources from documents that are to be processed, and uses them for sentiment analysis. This approach does not require any training corpora, large sets of rules or generic sentiment lexicons, which makes it domain- and languageindependent but at the same time able to utilise domain- and language-specific information. The thesis describes and tests the approach, which is applied to diffeerent data, including customer reviews of various types of products, reviews of films and books, and news items; and to four languages: Chinese, English, Russian and Japanese. The approach is applied not only to binary sentiment classiffication, but also to three-way sentiment classiffication (positive, negative and neutral), subjectivity classifiation of documents and sentences, and to the extraction of opinion holders and opinion targets. Experimental results suggest that the approach is often a viable alternative to supervised systems, especially when applied to large document collections
