    Determination of optimized sleep interval for 10 gigabit-passive optical network using learning intelligence

    The overall aim of this project is to investigate the application of a machine learning method in finding the optimized length of asleep time interval (TAS) in a cyclic sleep mechanism (CSM). Since past decade, the implementations of CSM in the optical network unit (ONU) to reduce the energy consumption in 10 gigabit-passive optical network (XG-PON) were extensively researched. However, the newest era sees the emergence of various network traffic with stringent demands that require further improvements on the TAS selection. Since conventional methods utilize complex algorithm, this paper presents the employment of an artificial neural network (ANN) to facilitate ONU to determine the optimized TAS values using learning from past experiences. Prior to simulation, theoretical analysis was done using the M/G/1 queueing system. The ANN was than trained and tested for the XG-PON network for optimal TAS decisions. Results have shown that towards higher network load, a decreasing TAS trend was observed from both methods. A wider TAS range was recorded from the ANN network as compared to the theoretical values. Therefore, these findings will benefit the network operators to have a flexibility measure in determining the optimal TAS values at current network conditions

    ENERGY EFFICIENT WIRED NETWORKING

    This research proposes a new dynamic energy management framework for a backbone Internet Protocol over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (IP over DWDM) network. Maintaining the logical IP-layer topology is a key constraint of our architecture whilst saving energy by infrastructure sleeping and virtual router migration. The traffic demand in a Tier 2/3 network typically has a regular diurnal pattern based on people‟s activities, which is high in working hours and much lighter during hours associated with sleep. When the traffic demand is light, virtual router instances can be consolidated to a smaller set of physical platforms and the unneeded physical platforms can be put to sleep to save energy. As the traffic demand increases the sleeping physical platforms can be re-awoken in order to host virtual router instances and so maintain quality of service. Since the IP-layer topology remains unchanged throughout virtual router migration in our framework, there is no network disruption or discontinuities when the physical platforms enter or leave hibernation. However, this migration places extra demands on the optical layer as additional connections are needed to preserve the logical IP-layer topology whilst forwarding traffic to the new virtual router location. Consequently, dynamic optical connection management is needed for the new framework. Two important issues are considered in the framework, i.e. when to trigger the virtual router migration and where to move virtual router instances to? For the first issue, a reactive mechanism is used to trigger the virtual router migration by monitoring the network state. Then, a new evolutionary-based algorithm called VRM_MOEA is proposed for solving the destination physical platform selection problem, which chooses the appropriate location of virtual router instances as traffic demand varies. A novel hybrid simulation platform is developed to measure the performance of new framework, which is able to capture the functionality of the optical layer, the IP layer data-path and the IP/optical control plane. Simulation results show that the performance of network energy saving depends on many factors, such as network topology, quiet and busy thresholds, and traffic load; however, savings of around 30% are possible with typical medium-sized network topologies

    Forecasting Network Traffic: A Survey and Tutorial with Open-Source Comparative Evaluation

    This paper presents a review of the literature on network traffic prediction, while also serving as a tutorial to the topic. We examine works based on autoregressive moving average models, like ARMA, ARIMA and SARIMA, as well as works based on Artifical Neural Networks approaches, such as RNN, LSTM, GRU, and CNN. In all cases, we provide a complete and self-contained presentation of the mathematical foundations of each technique, which allows the reader to get a full understanding of the operation of the different proposed methods. Further, we perform numerical experiments based on real data sets, which allows comparing the various approaches directly in terms of fitting quality and computational costs. We make our code publicly available, so that readers can readily access a wide range of forecasting tools, and possibly use them as benchmarks for more advanced solutions

    Integrated Approach for Diversion Route Performance Management during Incidents

    Non-recurrent congestion is one of the critical sources of congestion on the highway. In particular, traffic incidents create congestion in unexpected times and places that travelers do not prepare for. During incidents on freeways, route diversion has been proven to be a useful tactic to mitigate non-recurrent congestion. However, the capacity constraints created by the signals on the alternative routes put limits on the diversion process since the typical time-of-day signal control cannot handle the sudden increase in the traffic on the arterials due to diversion. Thus, there is a need for proactive strategies for the management of the diversion routes performance and for coordinated freeway and arterial (CFA) operation during incidents on the freeway. Proactive strategies provide better opportunities for both the agency and the traveler to make and implement decisions to improve performance. This dissertation develops a methodology for the performance management of diversion routes through integrating freeway and arterials operation during incidents on the freeway. The methodology includes the identification of potential diversion routes for freeway incidents and the generation and implementation of special signal plans under different incident and traffic conditions. The study utilizes machine learning, data analytics, multi-resolution modeling, and multi-objective optimization for this purpose. A data analytic approach based on the long short term memory (LSTM) deep neural network method is used to predict the utilized alternative routes dynamically using incident attributes and traffic status on the freeway and travel time on both the freeway and alternative routes during the incident. Then, a combination of clustering analysis, multi- resolution modeling (MRM), and multi-objective optimization techniques are used to develop and activate special signal plans on the identified alternative routes. The developed methods use data from different sources, including connected vehicle (CV) data and high- resolution controller (HRC) data for congestion patterns identification at the critical intersections on the alternative routes and signal plans generation. The results indicate that implementing signal timing plans to better accommodate the diverted traffic can improve the performance of the diverted traffic without significantly deteriorating other movements\u27 performance at the intersection. The findings show the importance of using data from emerging sources in developing plans to improve the performance of the diversion routes and ensure CFA operation with higher effectiveness

    Data Quality Management in Large-Scale Cyber-Physical Systems

    Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are cross-domain, multi-model, advance information systems that play a significant role in many large-scale infrastructure sectors of smart cities public services such as traffic control, smart transportation control, and environmental and noise monitoring systems. Such systems, typically, involve a substantial number of sensor nodes and other devices that stream and exchange data in real-time and usually are deployed in uncontrolled, broad environments. Thus, unexpected measurements may occur due to several internal and external factors, including noise, communication errors, and hardware failures, which may compromise these systems quality of data and raise serious concerns related to safety, reliability, performance, and security. In all cases, these unexpected measurements need to be carefully interpreted and managed based on domain knowledge and computational models. Therefore, in this research, data quality challenges were investigated, and a comprehensive, proof of concept, data quality management system was developed to tackle unaddressed data quality challenges in large-scale CPSs. The data quality management system was designed to address data quality challenges associated with detecting: sensor nodes measurement errors, sensor nodes hardware failures, and mismatches in sensor nodes spatial and temporal contextual attributes. Detecting sensor nodes measurement errors associated with the primary data quality dimensions of accuracy, timeliness, completeness, and consistency in large-scale CPSs were investigated using predictive and anomaly analysis models via utilising statistical and machine-learning techniques. Time-series clustering techniques were investigated as a feasible mean for detecting long-segmental outliers as an indicator of sensor nodes’ continuous halting and incipient hardware failures. Furthermore, the quality of the spatial and temporal contextual attributes of sensor nodes observations was investigated using timestamp analysis techniques. The different components of the data quality management system were tested and calibrated using benchmark time-series collected from a high-quality, temperature sensor network deployed at the University of East London. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed data quality management system was evaluated using a real-world, large-scale environmental monitoring network consisting of more than 200 temperature sensor nodes distributed around London. The data quality management system achieved high accuracy detection rate using LSTM predictive analysis technique and anomaly detection associated with DBSCAN. It successfully identified timeliness and completeness errors in sensor nodes’ measurements using periodicity analysis combined with a rule engine. It achieved up to 100% accuracy in detecting potentially failed sensor nodes using the characteristic-based time-series clustering technique when applied to two days or longer time-series window. Timestamp analysis was adopted effectively for evaluating the quality of temporal and spatial contextual attributes of sensor nodes observations, but only within CPS applications in which using gateway modules is possible
