    Distributed multimedia systems

    A distributed multimedia system (DMS) is an integrated communication, computing, and information system that enables the processing, management, delivery, and presentation of synchronized multimedia information with quality-of-service guarantees. Multimedia information may include discrete media data, such as text, data, and images, and continuous media data, such as video and audio. Such a system enhances human communications by exploiting both visual and aural senses and provides the ultimate flexibility in work and entertainment, allowing one to collaborate with remote participants, view movies on demand, access on-line digital libraries from the desktop, and so forth. In this paper, we present a technical survey of a DMS. We give an overview of distributed multimedia systems, examine the fundamental concept of digital media, identify the applications, and survey the important enabling technologies.published_or_final_versio

    Class Based Admission Control by Complete Partitioning -Video on Demand Server

    In the next generation network (NGN) environment specific consideration is on bandwidth minimization, because this reduces the cost of network. In response to the growing market demand for multimedia traffic transmission, NGN concept has been produced. The next generation network provides multimedia services over high speed networks, which supports DVD quality video on demand. Although it has numerous advantages, more exploration of the large-scale deployment video on demand is still needed. The focus of the research presented in this paper is a class based admission control by the complete partitioning of the video on demand server. In this paper we present analytically and by simulation how the blockage probability of the server significantly affects the on demand video request and the service.     QuIVeR: A class of interactive video retrieval protocols

    Video-on-demand (VOD) servers need to be efficiently designed in order to support a large number of users viewing the same or different videos at different rates. In this paper, we propose the Quasi-static Interactive Video Retrieval (QuIVeR) Protocol for this purpose when disk-array based video servers are used. Five variations - QuIVeR-1, QuIVeR-2, QuIVeR-3, QuIVeR-4 and QuIVeR-5 - are presented. The properties as well as the relative merits and demerits of each protocol are discussed. The protocols require no buffer at the server and hence, all retrieved segments are immediately transmitted to the appropriate users. The amount of buffer required at each user's set-top box is reduced to two video segments. Guarantees are provided for the avoidance of video starvation as well as buffer overflow at each user's set-top box. Numerical results, obtained using data from an MPEG coded `Star Wars' video, are provided.published_or_final_versio

    Performance model of interactive video-on-demand systems

    An interactive video-on-demand (VoD) system allows users to access video services, such as movies, electronic encyclopedia, interactive games, and educational videos from video servers on a broadband network. This paper develops a performance evaluation tool for the system design. In particular, a user activity model is developed to describe the usage of system resources, i.e., network bandwidth and video server usage, by a user as it interacts with the service. In addition, we allow batching of user requests, and the effect of such batching is captured in a batching model. Our proposed queueing model integrates both the user activity and the batching model. This model can be used to determine the requirements of network bandwidth and video server and, hence, the trade-off in communication and storage costs for different system resource configurations.published_or_final_versio

    The Integrated Media Approach to Networked Multimedia Systems

    Applications which require real-time multimedia services[13] face a number of difficult problems in the transmission of multimedia information. Among the most difficult problems are the heterogeneity of end nodes and the heterogeneity of media Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. End nodes typically consist of a computer and number of sensory input and output devices, such as displays, microphones, and cameras. QoS requirements[18] include degrees of reliability, jitter, and delay. We propose an integrated approach to address these problems. Multimedia input data comprise a sensory environment which an application will make available; these data are packaged together into an Integrated Multimedia Message (IMM). From a received IMM, output data are selectively reproduced to create another sensory environment. We propose an IMM format and protocol behaviors for generation, presentation, and synchronization of these messages. While IMM\u27s are aesthetically pleasing, well-suited to proposed high- speed networks, and ease intramessage synchronization, they are potentially plagued by the need to deliver QoS which meets the worst-case requirements of all of their components[6]. We believe that this problem can be addressed, and are testing that belief experimentally with the U.     Mobile and Wireless Communications have been one of the major revolutions of the late twentieth century. We are witnessing a very fast growth in these technologies where mobile and wireless communications have become so ubiquitous in our society and indispensable for our daily lives. The relentless demand for higher data rates with better quality of services to comply with state-of-the art applications has revolutionized the wireless communication field and led to the emergence of new technologies such as Bluetooth, WiFi, Wimax, Ultra wideband, OFDMA. Moreover, the market tendency confirms that this revolution is not ready to stop in the foreseen future. Mobile and wireless communications applications cover diverse areas including entertainment, industrialist, biomedical, medicine, safety and security, and others, which definitely are improving our daily life. Wireless communication network is a multidisciplinary field addressing different aspects raging from theoretical analysis, system architecture design, and hardware and software implementations. While different new applications are requiring higher data rates and better quality of service and prolonging the mobile battery life, new development and advanced research studies and systems and circuits designs are necessary to keep pace with the market requirements. This book covers the most advanced research and development topics in mobile and wireless communication networks.
