Green Cellular Networks: A Survey, Some Research Issues and Challenges
Energy efficiency in cellular networks is a growing concern for cellular
operators to not only maintain profitability, but also to reduce the overall
environment effects. This emerging trend of achieving energy efficiency in
cellular networks is motivating the standardization authorities and network
operators to continuously explore future technologies in order to bring
improvements in the entire network infrastructure. In this article, we present
a brief survey of methods to improve the power efficiency of cellular networks,
explore some research issues and challenges and suggest some techniques to
enable an energy efficient or "green" cellular network. Since base stations
consume a maximum portion of the total energy used in a cellular system, we
will first provide a comprehensive survey on techniques to obtain energy
savings in base stations. Next, we discuss how heterogeneous network deployment
based on micro, pico and femto-cells can be used to achieve this goal. Since
cognitive radio and cooperative relaying are undisputed future technologies in
this regard, we propose a research vision to make these technologies more
energy efficient. Lastly, we explore some broader perspectives in realizing a
"green" cellular network technologyComment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
Analysis of Radio Spectrum Market Evolution Possibilities
A tremendous growth in wireless traffic volumes and a shortage of feasible radio spectrum has led to a situation where the old and rigid spectrum regime is not a viable option for spectrum management and a shift towards a more market driven approach has begun. Great uncertainty still exists over how such a radio spectrum market will come about and what kind of shape it would take. This paper studies some long term macro level evolution possibilities for how this radio spectrum market could emerge and what would be the corresponding value chain configurations. The scenario planning and system dynamics methods are utilized to build four alternative future spectrum market scenarios.Spectrum Markets, Spectrum Policy, Flexible Spectrum Usage, Cognitive Radio, Value Networks, Scenario Planning, System Dynamics.
Performance Investigation of Wireless LAN with Variable Channel Width
Today, mostly the wireless LAN is based on preset static channel widths. Considering unique benefits of adapting channel width, which is a fundamental yet under-explored facet in wireless communication, We carried out investigations on the performance of suggested scenario, which are based on IEEE 802.11 and composed of different number of nodes with different channel width (10MHz, 20 MHz and 40 MHz) associated to one AP. This research work makes a strong case for wireless systems that adapt channel width in WLAN. Adapting channel width offers rich possibilities for improving system performance. This thesis provides an outlook of the aforementioned issues associated with wireless communication for instance, fairness problem among users associated to same AP and hidden terminal problem. Some issues are investigated and analyzed with Matlab tool. We found that the variable channel width increases the range of communication, providing the users with the required spectrum, which offers a natural way to both improve flow fairness and balance the load across the APs. Also the increase in channel width increases the throughput of suggested scenario compare to the fixed channel width. In our future work, we also provide possible solutions to the new problems in WLAN with variable channel width
EVM as generic QoS trigger for heterogeneous wieless overlay network
Fourth Generation (4G) Wireless System will integrate heterogeneous wireless
overlay systems i.e. interworking of WLAN/ GSM/ CDMA/ WiMAX/ LTE/ etc with
guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) and Experience (QoE).QoS(E) vary from
network to network and is application sensitive. User needs an optimal mobility
solution while roaming in Overlaid wireless environment i.e. user could
seamlessly transfer his session/ call to a best available network bearing
guaranteed Quality of Experience. And If this Seamless transfer of session is
executed between two networks having different access standards then it is
called Vertical Handover (VHO). Contemporary VHO decision algorithms are based
on generic QoS metrics viz. SNR, bandwidth, jitter, BER and delay. In this
paper, Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is proposed to be a generic QoS trigger for
VHO execution. EVM is defined as the deviation of inphase/ quadrature (I/Q)
values from ideal signal states and thus provides a measure of signal quality.
In 4G Interoperable environment, OFDM is the leading Modulation scheme (more
prone to multi-path fading). EVM (modulation error) properly characterises the
wireless link/ channel for accurate VHO decision. EVM depends on the inherent
transmission impairments viz. frequency offset, phase noise,
non-linear-impairment, skewness etc. for a given wireless link. Paper provides
an insight to the analytical aspect of EVM & measures EVM (%) for key
management subframes like association/re-association/disassociation/ probe
request/response frames. EVM relation is explored for different possible
NAV-Network Allocation Vectors (frame duration). Finally EVM is compared with
SNR, BER and investigation concludes EVM as a promising QoS trigger for OFDM
based emerging wireless standards.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, IJWMN 2010 august issue vol. 2, no.
Designing and Implementing Future Aerial Communication Networks
Providing "connectivity from the sky" is the new innovative trend in wireless
communications. High and low altitude platforms, drones, aircrafts and airships
are being considered as the candidates for deploying wireless communications
complementing the terrestrial communication infrastructure. In this article, we
report the detailed account of the design and implementation challenges of an
aerial network consisting of LTE Advanced (LTE-A) base stations. In particular,
we review achievements and innovations harnessed by an aerial network composed
of Helikite platforms. Helikites can be raised in the sky to bring Internet
access during special events and in the aftermath of an emergency. The trial
phase of the system mounting LTE-A technology onboard Helikites to serve users
on the ground showed not only to be very encouraging but that such a system
could offer even a longer lasting solution provided that inefficiency in
powering the radio frequency equipment in the Helikite can be overcome.Comment: IEEE Communications Magazine 201
