Implementing intelligent asset management systems (IAMS) within an industry 4.0 manufacturing environment

Continuous maintenance and the future – Foundations and technological challenges
High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle ‘big data’ analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product. Intelligent Products: Shifting the Production Control Logic in Construction (With Lean and BIM)
Production management and control in construction has not been addressed/updated ever since the introduction of Critical Path Method and the Last Planner® system. The predominant outside-in control logic and a fragmented and deep supply chain in construction significantly affect the efficiency over a lifecycle. In a construction project, a large number of organisations interact with the product throughout the process, requiring a significant amount of information handling and synchronisation between these organisations. However, due to the deep supply chains and problems with lack of information integration, the information flow down across the lifecycle poses a significant challenge. This research proposes a product centric system, where the control logic of the production process is embedded within the individual components from the design phase. The solution is enabled by a number of technologies and tools such as Building Information Modelling, Internet of Things, Messaging Systems and within the conceptual process framework of Lean Construction. The vision encompasses the lifecycle of projects from design to construction and maintenance, where the products can interact with the environment and its actors through various stages supporting a variety of actions. Energy efficiency in discrete-manufacturing systems: insights, trends, and control strategies
Since the depletion of fossil energy sources, rising energy prices, and governmental regulation restrictions, the current manufacturing industry is shifting towards more efficient and sustainable systems. This transformation has promoted the identification of energy saving opportunities and the development of new technologies and strategies oriented to improve the energy efficiency of such systems. This paper outlines and discusses most of the research reported during the last decade regarding energy efficiency in manufacturing systems, the current technologies and strategies to improve that efficiency, identifying and remarking those related to the design of management/control strategies. Based on this fact, this paper aims to provide a review of strategies for reducing energy consumption and optimizing the use of resources within a plant into the context of discrete manufacturing. The review performed concerning the current context of manufacturing systems, control systems implemented, and their transformation towards Industry 4.0 might be useful in both the academic and industrial dimension to identify trends and critical points and suggest further research lines.Peer ReviewedPreprin
Security Evaluation of Cyber-Physical Systems in Society- Critical Internet of Things
In this paper, we present evaluation of security
awareness of developers and users of cyber-physical systems. Our
study includes interviews, workshops, surveys and one practical
evaluation. We conducted 15 interviews and conducted survey with
55 respondents coming primarily from industry. Furthermore, we
performed practical evaluation of current state of practice for a
society-critical application, a commercial vehicle, and reconfirmed
our findings discussing an attack vector for an off-line societycritical
facility. More work is necessary to increase usage of security
strategies, available methods, processes and standards. The security
information, currently often insufficient, should be provided in the
user manuals of products and services to protect system users. We
confirmed it lately when we conducted an additional survey of
users, with users feeling as left out in their quest for own security
and privacy. Finally, hardware-related security questions begin to
come up on the agenda, with a general increase of interest and
awareness of hardware contribution to the overall cyber-physical
security. At the end of this paper we discuss possible
countermeasures for dealing with threats in infrastructures,
highlighting the role of authorities in this quest

Rapid manufacturing as a tool for agile manufacturing: applications and implementation perspectives
Manufacturing engineers and technologists around the globe are already well familiar with manufacturing methodologies and systems developments in the last part of the twentieth century. Many are probably also familiar with the current state of Rapid Prototyping (RP) technologies, especially in the areas of concept model making and prototype development. They may not however, be so familiar with the more recent developments of these technologies towards Rapid Manufacturing (RM) and the directions which the applications of RM technologies are taking for agile manufacturing purposes in particular. This paper critically reviews the various technologies currently available, outlines development trends in RM, discusses the approach, application and implementation perspectives by which these RM technologies are applied for increasing agility and responsiveness in manufacturing. Furthermore, the paper describes two case study examples to further illustrate the application scenarios in agile manufacturing before concluding remarks
