    Toward Family-Robot Interactions: A Family-Centered Framework in HRI

    As robotic products become more integrated into daily life, there is a greater need to understand authentic and real-world human-robot interactions to inform product design. Across many domestic, educational, and public settings, robots interact with not only individuals and groups of users, but also families, including children, parents, relatives, and even pets. However, products developed to date and research in human-robot and child-robot interactions have focused on the interaction with their primary users, neglecting the complex and multifaceted interactions between family members and with the robot. There is a significant gap in knowledge, methods, and theories for how to design robots to support these interactions. To inform the design of robots that can support and enhance family life, this paper provides (1) a narrative review exemplifying the research gap and opportunities for family-robot interactions and (2) an actionable family-centered framework for research and practices in human-robot and child-robot interaction

    Digital solutions to follow up on discharged new parents - a systematic literature review

This follow-up focuses on individual needs related to breastfeeding and infant feeding, practical advice on caring for babies, supporting and strengthening the new mother’s knowledge and self-confidence concerning child development and parenting skills, and supporting the relationship between parents and baby. This systematic review aims to integrate available research results that describe new parents’ experiences when health and care providers used telemedicine as a platform for follow-up after discharge from the childbirth department. This literature review was conducted following the PRISMA statement and was prospectively registered in PROSPERO CRD42021236912. The studies were identified through the following databases: AMED, Academic, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Ovid MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane database, and CINAHL. Results from these studies were compiled using thematic analysis. A total of 886 studies were identified. Screening resulted in eight studies that met the inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis produced the following themes: a) Flexibility and convenience of digital support, b) Digital literacy, c) Parents feeling safe with digital support, and d) Adequate substitute for physical meetings. New parents who live in a home environment with a relaxed atmosphere and around-the-clock digital support experience a sense of control, security, full attention, and encouragement. Digital follow up at home has proven effective because it can meet the support needs of new parents when necessary.publishedVersio

    Access to and experience of education for children and adolescents with cancer: a scoping review protocol

    BACKGROUND: Cancer diagnosis in childhood or adolescence impacts significantly on school attendance, experience and educational outcomes. While there is longstanding recognition in clinical practice that these effects span the whole illness trajectory and continue beyond treatment completion, further clarity is required on the specific barriers and facilitators to education during cancer treatment and beyond, as well as on the experiences of children and adolescents across the full range of education settings (hospital, home, virtual, original school of enrolment), in order to determine which interventions are successful in improving access and experience from their perspective. The aim of this review is to identify what is known from the existing literature about access to and experience of education for children and adolescents with cancer during and post treatment. METHODS: We have planned a scoping literature review searching the following databases from inception onwards: MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase and Embase Classic, Web of Science Core Collection, Education Resources Index, Sociological Abstracts, APA PsycINFO, SCOPUS, CINAHL Plus, Emcare and The Cochrane Library. In addition, DARE, conference abstracts, key journals, and institutional websites will be searched. Arksey and O'Malley's six-step process will be followed, including a consultation exercise. Studies, reports and policies from any country providing care and treatment for children and adolescents with cancer published in English will be considered eligible for inclusion. Two reviewers will independently screen all citations, full-text articles and abstract data. A narrative summary of findings will be conducted. Data analysis will involve quantitative (e.g., frequencies) and qualitative (e.g., content and thematic analysis) methods. DISCUSSION: This is a timely examination given the increased incidence of childhood cancer, more intensive treatment regimens and improved survival rates for childhood cancer. The inclusion of a substantive consultation exercise with families and professionals will provide an important opportunity to examine the scoping review outputs. Findings will assist the childhood cancer community in developing a comprehensive evidence-based understanding of a significant associated bio-psychosocial impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment and will form the first step towards developing effective interventions and policies to mitigate identified detrimental effects.     Money & Trust in Digital Society, Bitcoin and Stablecoins in ML enabled Metaverse Telecollaboration

    We present a state of the art and positioning book, about Digital society tools, namely; Web3, Bitcoin, Metaverse, AI/ML, accessibility, safeguarding and telecollaboration. A high level overview of Web3 technologies leads to a description of blockchain, and the Bitcoin network is specifically selected for detailed examination. Suitable components of the extended Bitcoin ecosystem are described in more depth. Other mechanisms for native digital value transfer are described, with a focus on `money'. Metaverse technology is over-viewed, primarily from the perspective of Bitcoin and extended reality. Bitcoin is selected as the best contender for value transfer in metaverses because of it's free and open source nature, and network effect. Challenges and risks of this approach are identified. A cloud deployable virtual machine based technology stack deployment guide with a focus on cybersecurity best practice can be downloaded from GitHub to experiment with the technologies. This deployable lab is designed to inform development of secure value transaction, for small and medium sized companies

    Supporting active and healthy aging with advanced robotics integrated in smart environment

    The technological advances in the robotic and ICT fields represent an effective solution to address specific societal problems to support ageing and independent life. One of the key factors for these technologies is the integration of service robotics for optimising social services and improving quality of life of the elderly population. This chapter aims to underline the barriers of the state of the art, furthermore the authors present their concrete experiences to overcome these barriers gained at the RoboTown Living Lab of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna within past and current projects. They analyse and discuss the results in order to give recommendations based on their experiences. Furthermore, this work highlights the trend of development from stand-alone solutions to cloud computing architecture, describing the future research directions

    The Key Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Early Childhood Education: A Review

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have been applied in various domains, including early childhood education (ECE). Integration of AI educational technology is a recent significant trend in ECE. Currently, there are more and more studies of AI in ECE. To date, there is a lack of survey articles that discuss the studies of AI in ECE. In this paper, we provide an up-to-date and in-depth overview of the key AI technologies in ECE that provides a historical perspective, summarizes the representative works, outlines open questions, discusses the trends and challenges through a detailed bibliometric analysis, and provides insightful recommendations for future research. We mainly discuss the studies that apply AI-based robots and AI technologies to ECE, including improving the social interaction of children with an autism spectrum disorder. This paper significantly contributes to provide an up-to-date and in-depth survey that is suitable as introductory material for beginners to AI in ECE, as well as supplementary material for advanced users.Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures, 4 table

    Improving access to ultrasound imaging in northern, remote communities

    Access to healthcare services—including access to medical imaging—is an important determinant of health outcomes. This thesis aims to improve understanding of and address gaps in access to ultrasound imaging for patients in northern, remote communities, and advance a novel ultrasound technology with the ultimate goal of improving patient care and health outcomes. This thesis first brings greater understanding of patients’ perceptions of access and factors which shape access to ultrasound imaging in northern, remote communities in Saskatchewan, Canada. A qualitative study was performed using interpretive description as a methodological approach and a multi-dimensional conceptualization of access to care as a theoretical framework. The study identified barriers which patients in northern, remote communities face in accessing ultrasound imaging, and demonstrated that geographic remoteness from imaging facilities was a central barrier. To determine whether disparities in access to ultrasound imaging resulted in disparities in utilization of ultrasound services, two population-based studies assessed the association between sociodemographic and geographic factors and obstetrical and non-obstetrical ultrasound utilization in Saskatchewan. In the first study investigating obstetrical ultrasound utilization, multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that women living in rural areas, remote areas, and low income neighbourhoods, as well as status First Nations women, were less likely to have a second trimester ultrasound, an important aspect of prenatal care. In a second study investigating non-obstetrical ultrasound utilization across the entire provincial population, multivariate Poisson regression analysis similarly demonstrated lower rates of non-obstetrical ultrasound utilization among individuals living in rural and remote areas, individuals residing in low income neighbourhoods, and status First Nations persons. To address the barriers which patients in northern, remote communities face in accessing ultrasound imaging and to minimize disparities in ultrasound imaging utilization as identified in previous studies in this thesis, telerobotic ultrasound technology was investigated as a solution to improve access to ultrasound imaging. Using this technology, radiologists and sonographers could remotely manipulate an ultrasound probe via a robotic arm, thereby remotely performing an ultrasound exam while patients remained in their home community. A clinical trial comparing conventional and telerobotic ultrasound approaches was undertaken, validating this technology for obstetrical ultrasound imaging. To determine the feasibility of using telerobotic technology to establish an ultrasound service delivery model to remotely provide diagnostic ultrasound exams in underserved communities, pilot telerobotic ultrasound clinics were developed in three northern, remote communities. Telerobotic ultrasound exams were sufficient for diagnosis in the majority of cases, minimizing travel or reducing wait times for these patients. This technology was subsequently evaluated during a COVID-19 outbreak in northern Saskatchewan, demonstrating the potential of this technology to provide critical ultrasound services to an underserved northern population and minimize health inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic. An economic evaluation was performed to compare a service delivery model using telerobotic ultrasound technology to alternative service delivery models. Telerobotic ultrasound combined with an itinerant sonographer service was found to be the lowest cost option from both a publicly funded healthcare payer perspective and a societal perspective for many northern, remote communities. This thesis provides key insights for health system leaders seeking improved understanding and novel solutions to improve access to ultrasound imaging in northern, remote communities. Findings suggest that telerobotic ultrasound is a viable solution to improve access to ultrasound imaging and reduce costs associated with ultrasound service delivery. Evidence in this thesis may be used to help improve ultrasound services and health equity for patients in underserved northern, remote communities. Continued respectful collaboration with northern, remote, Indigenous peoples and communities will be a critical aspect to ensure that ultrasound services meet community needs
