Grid-enabled Workflows for Industrial Product Design
This paper presents a generic approach for developing and using Grid-based workflow technology for enabling cross-organizational engineering applications. Using industrial product design examples from the automotive and aerospace industries we highlight the main requirements and challenges addressed by our approach and describe how it can be used for enabling interoperability between heterogeneous workflow engines
Technical alignment
This essay discusses the importance of the areas of
infrastructure and testing to help digital preservation services
demonstrate reliability, transparency, and accountability. It
encourages practitioners to build a strong culture in which
transparency and collaborations between technical frameworks
are valued highly. It also argues for devising and applying
agreed-upon metrics that will enable the systematic analysis of
preservation infrastructure. The essay begins by defining
technical infrastructure and testing in the digital preservation
context, provides case studies that exemplify both progress and
challenges for technical alignment in both areas, and concludes
with suggestions for achieving greater degrees of technical
alignment going forward
Building a Disciplinary, World-Wide Data Infrastructure
Sharing scientific data, with the objective of making it fully discoverable,
accessible, assessable, intelligible, usable, and interoperable, requires work
at the disciplinary level to define in particular how the data should be
formatted and described. Each discipline has its own organization and history
as a starting point, and this paper explores the way a range of disciplines,
namely materials science, crystallography, astronomy, earth sciences,
humanities and linguistics get organized at the international level to tackle
this question. In each case, the disciplinary culture with respect to data
sharing, science drivers, organization and lessons learnt are briefly
described, as well as the elements of the specific data infrastructure which
are or could be shared with others. Commonalities and differences are assessed.
Common key elements for success are identified: data sharing should be science
driven; defining the disciplinary part of the interdisciplinary standards is
mandatory but challenging; sharing of applications should accompany data
sharing. Incentives such as journal and funding agency requirements are also
similar. For all, it also appears that social aspects are more challenging than
technological ones. Governance is more diverse, and linked to the discipline
organization. CODATA, the RDA and the WDS can facilitate the establishment of
disciplinary interoperability frameworks. Being problem-driven is also a key

Electronic marketplace-to-marketplace alliances: emerging trends and strategic rationales
The electronic marketplace domain has recently witnessed the joining together of a number of previously independent marketplaces and the formation of collaborative alliances between others. This study seeks to determine the nature or type of cooperative arrangements or alliances that are currently being forged between electronic marketplaces, and the strategic rationale that is leading to this observed alliance formation. The findings of the study are based upon an examination of statements made to the press by marketplaces undertaking strategic alliances. This published data was supplemented with face-to-face interviews with managers at three relevant electronic marketplaces. Three distinct types of alliance are observed; the merger between previously separate marketplaces, the acquisition of one marketplace by another and the formation of an interoperability agreement between two marketplaces. Three rationales for alliance formation were observed: an increase in the number of buyers or suppliers in a given market sector that can access the marketplace (an increase in scale of operations), an increase in the breadth or depth of services that are offered to users of the marketplace (an increase in the scope of operations) and providing the ability to exchange information across multiple tiers of a supply chain. A broader discussion of the findings is given and suggestions for further research are made
Object-Oriented Paradigms for Modelling Vascular\ud Tumour Growth: a Case Study
Motivated by a family of related hybrid multiscale models, we have built an object-oriented framework for developing and implementing multiscale models of vascular tumour growth. The models are implemented in our framework as a case study to highlight how object-oriented programming techniques and good object-oriented design may be used effectively to develop hybrid multiscale models of vascular tumour growth. The intention is that this paper will serve as a useful reference for researchers modelling complex biological systems and that these researchers will employ some of the techniques presented herein in their own projects
The Global Open Science Cloud: Vision and Initial Successes
The Global Open Science Cloud has the potential to advance the way scientific data and resources are shared and accessed, and how global collaboration happens. However, addressing the challenges associated with its creation and ensuring inclusivity, interoperability, data privacy, and sustainability are crucial for its success. The collaborative efforts of stakeholders from different disciplines, regions, and sectors will be essential in realising the vision of a truly global and open science platform. The achievements of GOSC so far, including successful collaborations, funded projects, and the development of a common reference framework, demonstrate its potential and progress towards its goals
