    Empirical exploration of air traffic and human dynamics in terminal airspaces

    Air traffic is widely known as a complex, task-critical techno-social system, with numerous interactions between airspace, procedures, aircraft and air traffic controllers. In order to develop and deploy high-level operational concepts and automation systems scientifically and effectively, it is essential to conduct an in-depth investigation on the intrinsic traffic-human dynamics and characteristics, which is not widely seen in the literature. To fill this gap, we propose a multi-layer network to model and analyze air traffic systems. A Route-based Airspace Network (RAN) and Flight Trajectory Network (FTN) encapsulate critical physical and operational characteristics; an Integrated Flow-Driven Network (IFDN) and Interrelated Conflict-Communication Network (ICCN) are formulated to represent air traffic flow transmissions and intervention from air traffic controllers, respectively. Furthermore, a set of analytical metrics including network variables, complex network attributes, controllers' cognitive complexity, and chaotic metrics are introduced and applied in a case study of Guangzhou terminal airspace. Empirical results show the existence of fundamental diagram and macroscopic fundamental diagram at the route, sector and terminal levels. Moreover, the dynamics and underlying mechanisms of "ATCOs-flow" interactions are revealed and interpreted by adaptive meta-cognition strategies based on network analysis of the ICCN. Finally, at the system level, chaos is identified in conflict system and human behavioral system when traffic switch to the semi-stable or congested phase. This study offers analytical tools for understanding the complex human-flow interactions at potentially a broad range of air traffic systems, and underpins future developments and automation of intelligent air traffic management systems.Comment: 30 pages, 28 figures, currently under revie

    Robust Adaptive Congestion Control for Next Generation Networks

    This paper deals with the problem of congestion control in a next-generation heterogeneous network scenario. The algorithm runs in the 'edge' routers (the routers collecting the traffic between two different networks) with the aim of avoiding congestion in both the network and the edge routers. The proposed algorithm extends congestion control algorithms based on the Smith's principle: i) the controller, by exploiting on-line estimates via probe packets, adapts to the delay and rate variations; ii) the controller assures robust stability in the presence of time-varying delays

    Decentralised robust flow controller design for networks with multiple bottlenecks

An H problem is formulated to find decentralised controllers which can be implemented locally at the bottleneck nodes. A suboptimal solution to this problem is found and the implementation of the decentralised controllers is presented. The controllers are robust to time-varying uncertain multiple time-delays in different channels. They also satisfy tracking and weighted fairness requirements. Lower bounds on the actual stability margins are derived and their relation to the design parameters is analysed. A number of simulations are also included to illustrate the time-domain performance of the proposed controllers

    A genetic algorithm for the design of a fuzzy controller for active queue management

    Active queue management (AQM) policies are those policies of router queue management that allow for the detection of network congestion, the notification of such occurrences to the hosts on the network borders, and the adoption of a suitable control policy. This paper proposes the adoption of a fuzzy proportional integral (FPI) controller as an active queue manager for Internet routers. The analytical design of the proposed FPI controller is carried out in analogy with a proportional integral (PI) controller, which recently has been proposed for AQM. A genetic algorithm is proposed for tuning of the FPI controller parameters with respect to optimal disturbance rejection. In the paper the FPI controller design metodology is described and the results of the comparison with random early detection (RED), tail drop, and PI controller are presented

    Adaptive Robust Traffic Engineering in Software Defined Networks

    One of the key advantages of Software-Defined Networks (SDN) is the opportunity to integrate traffic engineering modules able to optimize network configuration according to traffic. Ideally, network should be dynamically reconfigured as traffic evolves, so as to achieve remarkable gains in the efficient use of resources with respect to traditional static approaches. Unfortunately, reconfigurations cannot be too frequent due to a number of reasons related to route stability, forwarding rules instantiation, individual flows dynamics, traffic monitoring overhead, etc. In this paper, we focus on the fundamental problem of deciding whether, when and how to reconfigure the network during traffic evolution. We propose a new approach to cluster relevant points in the multi-dimensional traffic space taking into account similarities in optimal routing and not only in traffic values. Moreover, to provide more flexibility to the online decisions on when applying a reconfiguration, we allow some overlap between clusters that can guarantee a good-quality routing regardless of the transition instant. We compare our algorithm with state-of-the-art approaches in realistic network scenarios. Results show that our method significantly reduces the number of reconfigurations with a negligible deviation of the network performance with respect to the continuous update of the network configuration.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to IFIP Networking 201

    Application of Finite-Time Stability Concepts to the Control of ATM Networks

    When dealing with the stability of a system, a distinction should be made between classical Lyapunov Stability and Finite-Time Stability (FTS) (or Short-Time Stability). The concept of Lyapunov Asymptotic Stability is largely known to the control community; on the other hand a system is said to be finite-time stable if, once we fix a time-interval, its state does not exceeds some bounds during this time-interval. Often asymptotic stability is enough for practical applications, but there are some cases where large values of the state are not acceptable, for instance in the presence of saturations. In these cases, we need to check that these unacceptable values are not attained by the state; for these purposes FTS could be used. Some early results on FTS can be found in [9], [12] and [8]; more recently the concept of FTS has been revisited in the light of recent results coming from Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) theory, which has allowed to find less conservative conditions guaranteeing FTS and finite time stabilization of uncertain, linear continuous-time systems (see [3]). In this note we consider the problem of applying some sufficient conditions for finite time stabilization to design the control algorithm of an ATM network described via a discrete-time system. The extended abstract is organized as follows: in Section 2 we provide a sufficient condition for finite time stabilization of a discrete time system; in Section 3 we detail the model of an ATM network; finally in Section 4 some concluding remarks and plans for the final version of the paper are given

    After more than 4 years of activity, the ComplexWorld Network, together with the projects and PhDs covered under the SESAR long-term research umbrella, have developed sound research material contributing to progress beyond the state of the art in fields such as resilience, uncertainty, multi-agent systems, metrics and data science. The achievements made by the ComplexWorld stakeholders have also led to the identification of new challenges that need to be addressed in the future. In order to pave the way for complexity science research in Air Traffic Management (ATM) in the coming years, ComplexWorld requested external assessments on how the challenges have been covered and where there are existing gaps. For that purpose, ComplexWorld, with the support of EUROCONTROL, established an expert panel to review selected documentation developed by the network and provide their assessment on their topic of expertise

    Towards Autonomous Aviation Operations: What Can We Learn from Other Areas of Automation?

    Rapid advances in automation has disrupted and transformed several industries in the past 25 years. Automation has evolved from regulation and control of simple systems like controlling the temperature in a room to the autonomous control of complex systems involving network of systems. The reason for automation varies from industry to industry depending on the complexity and benefits resulting from increased levels of automation. Automation may be needed to either reduce costs or deal with hazardous environment or make real-time decisions without the availability of humans. Space autonomy, Internet, robotic vehicles, intelligent systems, wireless networks and power systems provide successful examples of various levels of automation. NASA is conducting research in autonomy and developing plans to increase the levels of automation in aviation operations. This paper provides a brief review of levels of automation, previous efforts to increase levels of automation in aviation operations and current level of automation in the various tasks involved in aviation operations. It develops a methodology to assess the research and development in modeling, sensing and actuation needed to advance the level of automation and the benefits associated with higher levels of automation. Section II describes provides an overview of automation and previous attempts at automation in aviation. Section III provides the role of automation and lessons learned in Space Autonomy. Section IV describes the success of automation in Intelligent Transportation Systems. Section V provides a comparison between the development of automation in other areas and the needs of aviation. Section VI provides an approach to achieve increased automation in aviation operations based on the progress in other areas. The final paper will provide a detailed analysis of the benefits of increased automation for the Traffic Flow Management (TFM) function in aviation operations
