    A New Low Complexity Uniform Filter Bank Based on the Improved Coefficient Decimation Method

    In this paper, we propose a new uniform filter bank (FB) based on the improved coefficient decimation method (ICDM). In the proposed FB’s design, the ICDM is used to obtain different multi-band frequency responses using a single lowpass prototype filter. The desired subbands are individually obtained from these multi-band frequency responses by using low order frequency response masking filters and their corresponding ICDM output frequency responses. We show that the proposed FB is a very low complexity alternative to the other FBs in literature, especially the widely used discrete Fourier transform based FB (DFTFB) and the CDM based FB (CDFB). The proposed FB can have a higher number of subbands with twice the center frequency resolution when compared with the CDFB and DFTFB. Design example and implementation results show that our FB achieves 86.59% and 58.84% reductions in resource utilizations and 76.95% and 47.09% reductions in power consumptions when compared with the DFTFB and CDFB respectively

    Optimal cosine modulated nonuniform linear phase FIR filter bank design via stretching and shifting frequency response of prototype filter

    This paper proposes an optimal cosine modulated nonuniform linear phase finite impulse response (FIR) filter bank design. The frequency responses of all the analysis filters and the synthesis filters of the filter bank are derived based on both stretching and shifting the frequency response of the prototype filter. The total aliasing error of the filter bank is minimized subject to a specification on the maximum amplitude distortion of the filter bank as well as specifications on both the maximum passband ripple magnitude and the maximum stopband ripple magnitude of the prototype filter. This filter bank design problem is actually a functional inequality constrained optimization problem. Our recently developed integration approach is employed for solving the problem. Computer numerical simulation results show that our proposed design method outperforms existing design methods

    Optimal design of linear phase FIR digital filters with very flat passbands and equiripple stopbands

    A new technique is presented for the design of digital FIR filters, with a prescribed degree of flatness in the passband, and a prescribed (equiripple) attenuation in the stopband. The design is based entirely on an appropriate use of the well-known Reméz-exchange algorithm for the design of weighted Chebyshev FIR filters. The extreme versatility of this algorithm is combined with certain "maximally flat" FIR filter building blocks, in order to generate a wide family of filters. The design technique directly leads to structures that have low passband sensitivity properties

    A new method of designing linear-phase FIR filters is proposed by minimizing a quadratic measure of the error in the passband and stopband. The method is based on the computation of an eigenvector of an appropriate real, symmetric, and positive-definite matrix. The proposed design procedure is general enough to incorporate both time- and frequency-domain constraints. For example, Nyquist filters can be easily designed using this approach. The design time for the new method is comparable to that of Remez exchange techniques. The passband and stopband errors in the frequency domain can be made equiripple by an iterative process, which involves feeding back the approximation error at each iteration. Several numerical design examples and comparisons to existing methods are presented, which demonstrate the usefulness of the present approach

    The eigenfilter method for digital filter design involves the computation of filter coefficients as the eigenvector of an appropriate Hermitian matrix. Because of its low complexity as compared to other methods as well as its ability to incorporate various time and frequency-domain constraints easily, the eigenfilter method has been found to be very useful. In this paper, we present a review of the eigenfilter design method for a wide variety of filters, including linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters, nonlinear-phase FIR filters, all-pass infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, arbitrary response IIR filters, and multidimensional filters. Also, we focus on applications of the eigenfilter method in multistage filter design, spectral/spacial beamforming, and in the design of channel-shortening equalizers for communications applications

    P and M class phasor measurement unit algorithms using adaptive cascaded filters

    The new standard C37.118.1 lays down strict performance limits for phasor measurement units (PMUs) under steady-state and dynamic conditions. Reference algorithms are also presented for the P (performance) and M (measurement) class PMUs. In this paper, the performance of these algorithms is analysed during some key signal scenarios, particularly those of off-nominal frequency, frequency ramps, and harmonic contamination. While it is found that total vector error (TVE) accuracy is relatively easy to achieve, the reference algorithm is not able to achieve a useful ROCOF (rate of change of frequency) accuracy. Instead, this paper presents alternative algorithms for P and M class PMUs which use adaptive filtering techniques in real time at up to 10 kHz sample rates, allowing consistent accuracy to be maintained across a ±33% frequency range. ROCOF errors can be reduced by factors of >40 for P class and >100 for M class devices
