    Second year technical report on-board processing for future satellite communications systems

    Advanced baseband and microwave switching techniques for large domestic communications satellites operating in the 30/20 GHz frequency bands are discussed. The nominal baseband processor throughput is one million packets per second (1.6 Gb/s) from one thousand T1 carrier rate customer premises terminals. A frequency reuse factor of sixteen is assumed by using 16 spot antenna beams with the same 100 MHz bandwidth per beam and a modulation with a one b/s per Hz bandwidth efficiency. Eight of the beams are fixed on major metropolitan areas and eight are scanning beams which periodically cover the remainder of the U.S. under dynamic control. User signals are regenerated (demodulated/remodulated) and message packages are reformatted on board. Frequency division multiple access and time division multiplex are employed on the uplinks and downlinks, respectively, for terminals within the coverage area and dwell interval of a scanning beam. Link establishment and packet routing protocols are defined. Also described is a detailed design of a separate 100 x 100 microwave switch capable of handling nonregenerated signals occupying the remaining 2.4 GHz bandwidth with 60 dB of isolation, at an estimated weight and power consumption of approximately 400 kg and 100 W, respectively

    Cyber Data Anomaly Detection Using Autoencoder Neural Networks

    The Department of Defense requires a secure presence in the cyber domain to successfully execute its stated mission of deterring war and protecting the security of the United States. With potentially millions of logged network events occurring on defended networks daily, a limited staff of cyber analysts require the capability to identify novel network actions for security adjudication. The detection methodology proposed uses an autoencoder neural network optimized via design of experiments for the identification of anomalous network events. Once trained, each logged network event is analyzed by the neural network and assigned an outlier score. The network events with the largest outlier scores are anomalous and worthy of further review by cyber analysts. This neural network approach can operate in conjunction with alternate tools for outlier detection, enhancing the overall anomaly detection capability of cyber analysts

    Payload's sway angle measurement for container in the crane system based on remote sensing

    The demand for a high quickly measuring angle in the port crane system should be considered when the container has been transferred from one place to another place. It is significant to build the feedback linking of payload's angle in the integrated crane system. The value of accurate measurement of the angle can be used to optimize the crane control system. In this context, the design and implementation of the experimental setup associated with emulated cranes will be carried out. Several solutions for remote angle measurement were considered one of the considered solutions being represented by millimeter microwave radar sensors. Special developments of algorithms to calculate the sway angle of payload or container were considered as so as the real-time processing using Arduino Uno computation platform. The following objectives were successfully reached. 1. Development of remote sensing system for payload's swing angle measurement considering radars such the sensing devices; 2. Development of a novel angle algorithm measurement and real-time processing of data; 3. Development of a prototype characterized by real-time processing and remote detection capabilities considering short-range and long-range measurements, such as lidar sensor or radar sensor.A demanda por um ângulo de medição rápido e alto no sistema de guindaste portuário deve ser considerada quando o contêiner for transferido de um local para outro. O valor da medição precisa do ângulo pode ser usado para otimizar o sistema de controle do guindaste. Neste contexto, será realizada a concepção e implementação da configuração experimental associada a gruas emuladas. Diversas soluções para medição remota de ângulos foram consideradas uma das soluções consideradas sendo representadas por sensores de micro-ondas milimetrados. Desenvolvimentos especiais de algoritmos para calcular o ângulo de oscilação da carga útil ou contêiner foram considerados, assim como o processamento em tempo real usando a plataforma de computação Arduino Uno. Os seguintes objetivos foram alcançados com sucesso. 1. Desenvolvimento de sistema de sensoriamento remoto para medição do ângulo de oscilação da carga útil considerando radares como os dispositivos de detecção; 2. Desenvolvimento de um novo algoritmo de medição de ângulos e processamento de dados em tempo real; 3. Desenvolvimento de um protótipo caracterizado por processamento em tempo real e capacidade de detecção remota considerando medições de curto e longo alcance, como sensor LIDAR ou sensor de radar

    INTEGRATED SINGLE-PHOTON SENSING AND PROCESSING PLATFORM IN STANDARD CMOS

    Practical implementation of large SPAD-based sensor arrays in the standard CMOS process has been fraught with challenges due to the many performance trade-offs existing at both the device and the system level [1]. At the device level the performance challenge stems from the suboptimal optical characteristics associated with the standard CMOS fabrication process. The challenge at the system level is the development of monolithic readout architecture capable of supporting the large volume of dynamic traffic, associated with multiple single-photon pixels, without limiting the dynamic range and throughput of the sensor. Due to trade-offs in both functionality and performance, no general solution currently exists for an integrated single-photon sensor in standard CMOS single photon sensing and multi-photon resolution. The research described herein is directed towards the development of a versatile high performance integrated SPAD sensor in the standard CMOS process. Towards this purpose a SPAD device with elongated junction geometry and a perimeter field gate that features a large detection area and a highly reduced dark noise has been presented and characterized. Additionally, a novel front-end system for optimizing the dynamic range and after-pulsing noise of the pixel has been developed. The pixel is also equipped with an output interface with an adjustable pulse width response. In order to further enhance the effective dynamic range of the pixel a theoretical model for accurate dead time related loss compensation has been developed and verified. This thesis also introduces a new paradigm for electrical generation and encoding of the SPAD array response that supports fully digital operation at the pixel level while enabling dynamic discrete time amplitude encoding of the array response. Thus offering a first ever system solution to simultaneously exploit both the dynamic nature and the digital profile of the SPAD response. The array interface, comprising of multiple digital inputs capacitively coupled onto a shared quasi-floating sense node, in conjunction with the integrated digital decoding and readout electronics represents the first ever solid state single-photon sensor capable of both photon counting and photon number resolution. The viability of the readout architecture is demonstrated through simulations and preliminary proof of concept measurements

    The goal of this work is to develop a Rear-End Collision Avoidance System for automobiles. In order to develop the Rear-end Collision Avoidance System, it is stated that the most important difference from the old practice is the fact that new design approach attempts to completely avoid collision instead of minimizing the damage by over-designing cars. Rear-end collisions are the third highest cause of multiple vehicle fatalities in the U.S. Their cause seems to be a result of poor driver awareness and communication. For example, car brake lights illuminate exactly the same whether the car is slowing, stopping or the driver is simply resting his foot on the pedal. In the development of Rear-End Collision Avoidance System (RECAS), a thorough review of hardware, software, driver/human factors, and current rear-end collision avoidance systems are included. Key sensor technologies are identified and reviewed in an attempt to ease the design effort. The characteristics and capabilities of alternative and emerging sensor technologies are also described and their performance compared. In designing a RECAS the first component is to monitor the distance and speed of the car ahead. If an unsafe condition is detected a warning is issued and the vehicle is decelerated (if necessary). The second component in the design effort utilizes the illumination of independent segments of brake lights corresponding to the stopping condition of the car. This communicates the stopping intensity to the following driver. The RECAS is designed the using the LabVIEW software. The simulation is designed to meet several criteria: System warnings should result in a minimum load on driver attention, and the system should also perform well in a variety of driving conditions. In order to illustrate and test the proposed RECAS methods, a Java program has been developed. This simulation animates a multi-car, multi-lane highway environment where car speeds are assigned randomly, and the proposed RECAS approaches demonstrate rear-end collision avoidance successfully. The Java simulation is an applet, which is easily accessible through the World Wide Web and also can be tested for different angles of the sensor
