    Review of current study methods for VRU safety : Appendix 4 –Systematic literature review: Naturalistic driving studies

    With the aim of assessing the extent and nature of naturalistic studies involving vulnerable road users, a systematic literature review was carried out. The purpose of this review was to identify studies based on naturalistic data from VRUs (pedestrians, cyclists, moped riders and motorcyclists) to provide an overview of how data was collected and how data has been used. In the literature review, special attention is given to the use of naturalistic studies as a tool for road safety evaluations to gain knowledge on methodological issues for the design of a naturalistic study involving VRUs within the InDeV project. The review covered the following types of studies: •Studies collecting naturalistic data from vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, moped riders, motorcyclists). •Studies collecting accidents or safety-critical situations via smartphones from vulnerable road users and motorized vehicles. •Studies collecting falls that have not occurred on roads via smartphones. Four databases were used in the search for publications: ScienceDirect, Transport Research International Documentation (TRID), IEEE Xplore and PubMed. In addition to these four databases, six databases were screened to check if they contained references to publications not already included in the review. These databases were: Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Springerlink, Taylor & Francis and Engineering Village.The findings revealed that naturalistic studies of vulnerable road users have mainly been carried out by collecting data from cyclists and pedestrians and to a smaller degree of motorcyclists. To collect data, most studies used the built-in sensors of smartphones, although equipped bicycles or motorcycles were used in some studies. Other types of portable equipment was used to a lesser degree, particularly for cycling studies. The naturalistic studies were carried out with various purposes: mode classification, travel surveys, measuring the distance and number of trips travelled and conducting traffic counts. Naturalistic data was also used for assessment of the safety based on accidents, safety-critical events or other safety-related aspect such as speed behaviour, head turning and obstacle detection. Only few studies detect incidents automatically based on indicators collected via special equipment such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS receivers, switches, etc. for assessing the safety by identifying accidents or safety-critical events. Instead, they rely on self-reporting or manual review of video footage. Despite this, the review indicates that there is a large potential of detecting accidents from naturalistic data. A large number of studies focused on the detection of falls among elderly people. Using smartphone sensors, the movements of the participants were monitored continuously. Most studies used acceleration as indicator of falls. In some cases, the acceleration was supplemented by rotation measurements to indicate that a fall had occurred. Most studies of using kinematic triggers for detection of falls, accidents and safety-critical events were primarily used for demonstration of prototypes of detection algorithms. Few studies have been tested on real accidents or falls. Instead, simulated falls were used both in studies of vulnerable road users and for studies of falls among elderly people

    What Lies Beneath: Unraveling the Generative Mechanisms of Smart Technology and Service Design

    The rapid digitalization of products and services has given rise to smart, technological products and services in various industries. While researchers recognize the complexity of digital components embedded in smart services, there exists scarce research on the evolution of product development, smart technology’s use, and the mechanisms wherein changes in products and services are triggered and implemented. In this research, grounded on the theoretical basis of layered modular architecture, we study a digital venture in an event management industry and offer a substantive look at the three mechanisms—system-environment fitness, data exploitation, and user expansion—that are responsible for transforming smart technology from a conceptual idea into a real product and from a simple digital device into an integrated smart system. Our research findings offer theoretical insight into the dynamics and fluidity of mechanisms that are relevant to smart technology’s design, use, and outcomes

    User Mobility Detection using Foot Force Sensors and Mobile Phone GPS.

    PhDA user (or human) mobility context is defined as a type of user context that describes a type of whole body posture (e.g., standing versus sitting) and/or a type of travel or transportation mode (e.g., walking, cycling, travel by bus, etc). Such a context can be derived from low-level sensor data and spatial contexts, including location coordinates, 3D-orientation, direction (with respect to magnetic north), velocity and acceleration. Different value-added services can be adapted to users’ mobility contexts such as assessing how eco-friendly our travel is, and adapting travel information services such as maps to different transportation modes. Current sensor-based methods for user mobility detection have several key limitations: narrow range of recognition, coarse user mobility recognition capability, and low recognition accuracy. In this thesis, a new Foot-Force and GPS (FF+GPS) sensor method is proposed to overcome these challenges that leverages a set of wearable FF sensors in combination with mobile phone GPS. The novelty of this approach is that it provides a more comprehensive recognition capability in terms of reliably recognising various fine-grained human postures and transportation modes. In addition, by comparing the new FF+GPS method with both an accelerometer (ACC) method (62% accuracy) and an ACC+GPS based method (70% accuracy) as baseline methods, it obtains a higher accuracy (90%) with less computational complexity, when tested on a dataset obtained from ten individuals. In addition, the new FF+GPS method has been further extended and evaluated. More specifically, the trade-off between the computation and resources needed to support lower versus higher number of features and sensors has been investigated. The improved FF+GPS method reduced the number of classification features from 31 to 12, reduced the number of FF sensors from 8 to 4, and reduced the use of GPS in mobility activity recognition

    Design and Test of a Hybrid Foot Force Sensing and GPS System for Richer User Mobility Activity Recognition

    Wearable and accompanied sensors and devices are increasingly being used for user activity recognition. However, typical GPS-based and accelerometer-based (ACC) methods face three main challenges: a low recognition accuracy; a coarse recognition capability, i.e., they cannot recognise both human posture (during travelling) and transportation mode simultaneously, and a relatively high computational complexity. Here, a new GPS and Foot-Force (GPS + FF) sensor method is proposed to overcome these challenges that leverages a set of wearable FF sensors in combination with GPS, e.g., in a mobile phone. User mobility activities that can be recognised include both daily user postures and common transportation modes: sitting, standing, walking, cycling, bus passenger, car passenger (including private cars and taxis) and car driver. The novelty of this work is that our approach provides a more comprehensive recognition capability in terms of reliably recognising both human posture and transportation mode simultaneously during travel. In addition, by comparing the new GPS + FF method with both an ACC method (62% accuracy) and a GPS + ACC based method (70% accuracy) as baseline methods, it obtains a higher accuracy (95%) with less computational complexity, when tested on a dataset obtained from ten individuals

    Incorporating End-User Feedback in the Development and Validation of a Smart Textile for assessing Sports Training and Performance

    Objectives: The aims of the research project were to explore the need and desire of a new sport wearable within applied practice by creating dialogue with the end-users. Furthermore, the research project sets out to quantify the reliability and validity a new sports wearable, KiTT (Knitted intelligent Textile Tracker), against the current gold-standard three-dimensional motion-analysis counter-part. Methods: Study 1 will utilise semi-structured interviews to create dialogue between the researcher and end-users. This will help provide an image into the current use of technology within applied practice. Furthermore, study 2 will capture and calculate the relative knee angles from KiTT’s raw resistance, and compare the results to that of Vicon, where reliability and validity will be assessed; this is imperative before task-specific research. Results: Study 1 identified a need, and requirement for new sport wearables, specifically in the form of e-textiles. This would enable end-users to adopt technology into their work, potentially enhancing their output. In addition, study 2 suggests that KiTT serves as a valid and reliable tool at recording relative knee angle across five commonly used sporting exercises, with high degrees of accuracy. Conclusion: End-users stated a need and requirement for technology such as KiTT to be created for adoption within their practice. Current systems are often inaccessible and can lead to performance losses. KiTT serves as a valid alternative to motion-capture, whilst offering more benefits to the user (cost-friendly, easy to use, and portable). When investigating an individual’s relative knee angle, KiTT should be considered especially in specific testing conditions

    Using plantar pressure for free-living posture recognition and sedentary behaviour monitoring

    Health authorities in numerous countries and even the World Health Organization (WHO) are concerned with low levels of physical activity and increasing sedentary behaviour amongst the general population. In fact, emerging evidences identify sedentary behaviour as a ubiquitous characteristic of contemporary lifestyles. This has major implications for the general health of people worldwide particularly for the prevalence of non-communicable conditions (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer and their risk factors such as raised blood pressure, raised blood sugar and overweight. Moreover, sedentary time appears to be uniquely associated with health risks independent of physical activity intensity levels. However, habitual sedentary behaviour may prove complex to be accurately measured as it occurs across different domains, including work, transport, domestic duties and even lei¬sure. Since sedentary behaviour is mostly reflect as too much sitting, one of the main concerns is being able to distinguish among different activities, such as sitting and standing. Widely used devices such as accelerometer-based activity monitors have a limited ability to detect sedentary activities accurately. Thus, there is a need of a viable large-scale method to efficiently monitor sedentary behaviour. This thesis proposes and demonstrates how a plantar pressure based wearable device and machine learning classification techniques have significant capability to monitor daily life sedentary behaviour. Firstly, an in-depth review of research and market ready plantar pressure and force technologies is performed to assess their measurement capabilities and limitations to measure sedentary behaviour. Afterwards, a novel methodology for measuring daily life sedentary behaviour using plantar pressure data and a machine learning predictive model is developed. The proposed model and its algorithm are constructed using a dataset of 20 participants collected at both laboratory-based and free-living conditions. Sitting and standing variations are included in the analysis as well as the addition of a potential novel activities, such as leaning. Video footage is continuously collected using of a wearable camera as an equivalent of direct observation to allow the labelling of the training data for the machine learning model. The optimal parameters of the model such as feature set, epoch length, type of classifier is determined by experimenting with multiple iterations. Different number and location of plantar pressure sensors are explored to determine the optimal trade-off between low computational cost and accurate performance. The model s performance is calculated using both subject dependent and subject independent validation by performing 10-fold stratified cross-validation and leave-one-user-out validation respectively. Furthermore, the proposed model activity performance for daily life monitoring is validated against the current criterion (i.e. direct observation) and against the de facto standard, the activPAL. The results show that the proposed machine learning classification model exhibits excel-lent recall rates of 98.83% with subject dependent training and 95.93% with independent training. This work sets the groundwork for developing a future plantar pressure wearable device for daily life sedentary behaviour monitoring in free-living conditions that uses the proposed ma-chine leaning classification model. Moreover, this research also considers important design characteristics of wearable devices such as low computational cost and improved performance, addressing the current gap in the physical activity and sedentary behaviour wearable market
