Adaptive-smith predictor for controlling an automotive electronic throttle over network
The paper presents a control strategy for an automotive electronic throttle,
a device used to regulate the power produced by spark-ignition engines. Controlling
the electronic throttle body is a difficult task because the throttle accounts strong
nonlinearities. The difficulty increases when the control works through communication
networks subject to random delay. In this paper, we revisit the Smith-predictor
control, and show how to adapt it for controlling the electronic throttle body over a
delay-driven network. Experiments were carried out in a laboratory, and the corresponding

Development of c-means Clustering Based Adaptive Fuzzy Controller for A Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle
Advanced and accurate modelling of a Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle (FW MAV)
and its control is one of the recent research topics related to the field of
autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In this work, a four wing
Natureinspired (NI) FW MAV is modeled and controlled inspiring by its advanced
features like quick flight, vertical take-off and landing, hovering, and fast
turn, and enhanced manoeuvrability when contrasted with comparable-sized fixed
and rotary wing UAVs. The Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithm is utilized
to demonstrate the NIFW MAV model, which has points of interest over first
principle based modelling since it does not depend on the system dynamics,
rather based on data and can incorporate various uncertainties like sensor
error. The same clustering strategy is used to develop an adaptive fuzzy
controller. The controller is then utilized to control the altitude of the NIFW
MAV, that can adapt with environmental disturbances by tuning the antecedent

Performance-oriented model learning for data-driven MPC design
Model Predictive Control (MPC) is an enabling technology in applications
requiring controlling physical processes in an optimized way under constraints
on inputs and outputs. However, in MPC closed-loop performance is pushed to the
limits only if the plant under control is accurately modeled; otherwise, robust
architectures need to be employed, at the price of reduced performance due to
worst-case conservative assumptions. In this paper, instead of adapting the
controller to handle uncertainty, we adapt the learning procedure so that the
prediction model is selected to provide the best closed-loop performance. More
specifically, we apply for the first time the above "identification for
control" rationale to hierarchical MPC using data-driven methods and Bayesian

GA tuning of pitch controller for small scale MAVs
The paper presents the application of intelligent tuning methods for the control of a prototype MAV in order to address problems associated with bandwidth limited actuators and gust alleviation. Specifically, as a proof of concept, the investigation is focused on the pitch control of a MAV. The work is supported by experimental results from wind tunnel testing that shows the merits of the use of Genetic Algorithm (GA) tuning techniques compared to classical, empirical tuning methodologies. To provide a measure of relative merit, the controller responses are evaluated using the ITAE performance index. In this way, the proposed method is shown to induce far superior dynamic performance compared to traditional approaches
Robustness analysis of evolutionary controller tuning using real systems
A genetic algorithm (GA) presents an excellent method for controller parameter tuning. In our work, we evolved the heading as well as the altitude controller for a small lightweight helicopter. We use the real flying robot to evaluate the GA's individuals rather than an artificially consistent simulator. By doing so we avoid the ldquoreality gaprdquo, taking the controller from the simulator to the real world. In this paper we analyze the evolutionary aspects of this technique and discuss the issues that need to be considered for it to perform well and result in robust controllers
Real-time evolution of an embedded controller for an autonomous helicopter
In this paper we evolve the parameters of a proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controller for an unstable, complex and nonlinear system. The individuals of the applied genetic algorithm (GA) are evaluated on the actual system rather than on a simulation of it, thus avoiding the ldquoreality gaprdquo. This makes implicit a formal model identification for the implementation of a simulator. This also calls for the GA to be approached in an unusual way, where we need to consider new aspects not normally present in the usual situations using an unnaturally consistent simulator for fitness evaluation. Although elitism is used in the GAs, no monotonic increase in fitness is exhibited by the algorithm. Instead, we show that the GApsilas individuals converge towards more robust solutions
Fuzzy logic control for energy saving in autonomous electric vehicles
Limited battery capacity and excessive battery dimensions have been two major limiting factors in the rapid advancement of electric vehicles. An alternative to increasing battery capacities is to use better: intelligent control techniques which save energy on-board while preserving the performance that will extend the range with the same or even smaller battery capacity and dimensions. In this paper, we present a Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controller (Type-2 FLC) as the speed controller, acting as the Driver Model Controller (DMC) in Autonomous Electric Vehicles (AEV). The DMC is implemented using realtime control hardware and tested on a scaled down version of a back to back connected brushless DC motor setup where the actual vehicle dynamics are modelled with a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) system. Using the minimization of the Integral Absolute Error (IAE) has been the control design criteria and the performance is compared against Type-1 Fuzzy Logic and Proportional Integral Derivative DMCs. Particle swarm optimization is used in the control design. Comparisons on energy consumption and maximum power demand have been carried out using HIL system for NEDC and ARTEMIS drive cycles. Experimental results show that Type-2 FLC saves energy by a substantial amount while simultaneously achieving the best IAE of the control strategies tested
Robust fractional order PI control for cardiac output stabilisation
Drug regulatory paradigms are dependent on the hemodynamic system as it serves to distribute and clear the drug in/from the body. While focusing on the objective of the drug paradigm at hand, it is important to maintain stable hemodynamic variables. In this work, a biomedical application requiring robust control properties has been used to illustrate the potential of an autotuning method, referred to as the fractional order robust autotuner. The method is an extension of a previously presented autotuning principle and produces controllers which are robust to system gain variations. The feature of automatic tuning of controller parameters can be of great use for data-driven adaptation during intra-patient variability conditions. Fractional order PI/PD controllers are generalizations of the well-known PI/PD controllers that exhibit an extra parameter usually used to enhance the robustness of the closed loop system. The paper presents a Stateflow based network test-bed to validate real-time
optimal control algorithms. Genetic Algorithm (GA) based time domain
performance index minimization is attempted for tuning of PI controller to
handle a balanced lag and delay type First Order Plus Time Delay (FOPTD)
process over network. The tuning performance is validated on a real-time
communication network with artificially simulated stochastic delay, packet loss
