    Animating complex concepts

    Techniques in computer-aided learning offer significant benefits for explaining difficult concepts in a way that is both stimulating and efficient. In the context of the STORM system, we have employed computer-based animation as a means of elucidating complex concepts in the educational domain of Internet and communications technology. Our experience reveals two important lessons for the application of computer animated instruction. Firstly, there is an essential requirement in the design process to ensure that the ontology and manner of presentation accurately conveys the intended message, whilst avoiding ambiguity and false or 'hidden' information. This focuses upon concise and disambiguated animations. Secondly, this requirement is best achieved through an iterative group-based development cycle of specification, testing and implementation

    A General Simulation Framework for Supply Chain Modeling: State of the Art and Case Study

    Nowadays there is a large availability of discrete event simulation software that can be easily used in different domains: from industry to supply chain, from healthcare to business management, from training to complex systems design. Simulation engines of commercial discrete event simulation software use specific rules and logics for simulation time and events management. Difficulties and limitations come up when commercial discrete event simulation software are used for modeling complex real world-systems (i.e. supply chains, industrial plants).     Army-NASA aircrew/aircraft integration program (A3I) software detailed design document, phase 3

    The capabilities and design approach of the MIDAS (Man-machine Integration Design and Analysis System) computer-aided engineering (CAE) workstation under development by the Army-NASA Aircrew/Aircraft Integration Program is detailed. This workstation uses graphic, symbolic, and numeric prototyping tools and human performance models as part of an integrated design/analysis environment for crewstation human engineering. Developed incrementally, the requirements and design for Phase 3 (Dec. 1987 to Jun. 1989) are described. Software tools/models developed or significantly modified during this phase included: an interactive 3-D graphic cockpit design editor; multiple-perspective graphic views to observe simulation scenarios; symbolic methods to model the mission decomposition, equipment functions, pilot tasking and loading, as well as control the simulation; a 3-D dynamic anthropometric model; an intermachine communications package; and a training assessment component. These components were successfully used during Phase 3 to demonstrate the complex interactions and human engineering findings involved with a proposed cockpit communications design change in a simulated AH-64A Apache helicopter/mission that maps to empirical data from a similar study and AH-1 Cobra flight test

    Towards a methodology for rigorous development of generic requirements patterns

    We present work in progress on a methodology for the engineering, validation and verification of generic requirements using domain engineering and formal methods. The need to develop a generic requirement set for subsequent system instantiation is complicated by the addition of the high levels of verification demanded by safety-critical domains such as avionics. We consider the failure detection and management function for engine control systems as an application domain where product line engineering is useful. The methodology produces a generic requirement set in our, UML based, formal notation, UML-B. The formal verification both of the generic requirement set, and of a particular application, is achieved via translation to the formal specification language, B, using our U2B and ProB tools

    Human motion modeling and simulation by anatomical approach

    To instantly generate desired infinite realistic human motion is still a great challenge in virtual human simulation. In this paper, the novel emotion effected motion classification and anatomical motion classification are presented, as well as motion capture and parameterization methods. The framework for a novel anatomical approach to model human motion in a HTR (Hierarchical Translations and Rotations) file format is also described. This novel anatomical approach in human motion modelling has the potential to generate desired infinite human motion from a compact motion database.     Towards a comprehensive 3D dynamic facial expression database

    Human faces play an important role in everyday life, including the expression of person identity, emotion and intentionality, along with a range of biological functions. The human face has also become the subject of considerable research effort, and there has been a shift towards understanding it using stimuli of increasingly more realistic formats. In the current work, we outline progress made in the production of a database of facial expressions in arguably the most realistic format, 3D dynamic. A suitable architecture for capturing such 3D dynamic image sequences is described and then used to record seven expressions (fear, disgust, anger, happiness, surprise, sadness and pain) by 10 actors at 3 levels of intensity (mild, normal and extreme). We also present details of a psychological experiment that was used to formally evaluate the accuracy of the expressions in a 2D dynamic format. The result is an initial, validated database for researchers and practitioners. The goal is to scale up the work with more actors and expression types
