    Is the Log Export Ban Effective? Revisiting the Issue through the Case of Indonesia

    The effectiveness of a log export ban policy in achieving the twin goals of conservation and economic development has been vigorously debated by many researchers and policymakers for the last two decades or so. Despite the abundance of work focusing on this issue that demonstrates the perversity of this policy, many countries around the world still implement it. This paper will, first, review the economic and political arguments on the pros and cons of this policy. Second, it will review the Indonesian experience in implementing the policy in the 1980s and 2000s.     The paper is aimed to discuss the influence of promoting free-trade between countries participants of Belt and Road initiative. the globalization of world trade can facilitate growth, and to inhibit it. The latter is the case, if there is a fixing of specialization of developing countries in exporting raw materials. And this is a key challenge for Russia, in relation to participation in the OBOR initiative. Opportunities for mutual benefit and win-win cooperation in international trade within OBOR countries are discussed.     Russian manufacturing and the threat of ‘Dutch disease’: a comparison of competitiveness developments in Russian and Ukrainian industry

    This paper examines the development of Russian industry in comparison with that of Ukrainian industry during 1995–2004 in an effort to ascertain to what extent, if any, Russian manufacturing showed signs of succumbing to ‘Dutch disease’. Ukraine and Russia began the market transition with broadly similar institutions, industrial structures and levels of technology, and the economic reforms implemented in the two countries were also similar, although Ukraine was reckoned to lag behind Russia in many areas. The main difference between them is Russia’s far greater resource wealth. It follows that differences in industrial development since 1991 may to some degree be attributable to differences in initial natural resource endowments. In short, Ukraine could provide a rough approximation of how a resource-poor Russia might have developed over the transition

    Outputs of innovation systems: a European perspective

On it, we try to characterize some European countries according to seven innovation output indicators in the manufacturing and service sectors. The data are gathered from the Community Innovation Surveys between 1996 and 2006. Innovation performance measurement is considered as increasingly interesting by several scholars during last years. Whilst the paper questions the desirability of policy focusing on the promotion of key sectors, it suggests that tools are generally underdeveloped to identify these sectors. The paper suggests that multi-sectoral qualitative analysis provides one means of forming conclusions on sector potentials.

    Ultrastructural characterization (morphological and topochemical) of wood pulp fibres

    Different electron microscopy techniques including SEM (scanning electron microscopy), FE-SEM (field emission-scanning electron microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and Immuno-gold TEM (immuno-gold transmission electron microscopy) were applied in order to gain a better understanding of the influence of the native softwood fibre cell wall ultrastructure including morphology and topochemistry (i.e. lignin and glucomannan distribution) during mechanical pulping. In thermomechanical pulp (TMP) processing, wood fibres undergo structural changes (cell wall delamination and fibrillation) that are regulated by the native fibre micro- and ultrastructure. In addition, novel information was obtained on the fibre cell wall architecture. In contrast, the stoneground wood (SGW) process inflicted severe damage to the fibre structure resulting in transverse and longitudinal fibre breakage. However, juvenile wood SGW fibres showed improved properties (strength and light scattering) compared to mature wood. Ultrastructural aspects of fibre processing and development explained the differences in physical properties observed. During the SGW process, the native morphological fibre cell wall ultrastructure and microfibrillar organization governed the manner of juvenile wood fibre development similar to TMP fibres. Ultrastructural studies on Norway spruce and Scots pine TMPs revealed fundamental features that governed the different behaviour exhibited by the two wood species. Specific ultrastructural characteristics of pine TMP fibre cell walls were explored in relation to both morphology and topochemistry and that regulating the different pine fibre development mechanisms compared to spruce. The negative behaviour shown by Scots pine during TMP processing was most likely attributable to the observed fibre development mechanism. Histochemical techniques were applied to study wood resin associated problems during mechanical and kraft pulping. Studies provided information on the spatial micro-morphological distribution/redistribution of lipophilic extractives that were visualized on single fibre and cell wall fractions. Results from histochemical staining and chemical analysis performed on Norway spruce and Scots pine TMPs showed that there were morphological and chemical differences in the redistribution of extractives between the two species. This may further contribute to the effects of extractives on pulp- and paper properties and processing. Localization of lipophilic birch wood extractives involved in pitch problems was performed using histochemical techniques. Correlated information from gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and specific staining methods gave details on how extractives are removed during processing as well as information on the mechanisms of removal

    Examining the growth patterns of Brazilian cities

    The share of urban population in Brazil increased from 58 to 80 percent between 1970 and 2000 and all net population growth over the next 30 years is predicted to be in cities. This paper explores population growth and its implications for economic dynamics and income generation among 123 urban agglomerations. Incomes are higher in larger agglomerations and in the South, but there is some indication of regional convergence with higher rates of income growth in poorer areas. In particular, agglomerations in the North and Central-West are growing faster than the more established urban centers in the South. Economic dynamics point to a process of increased diversification among larger cities, and greater specialization among medium-sized agglomerations. In bigger centers there is a trend toward deconcentration toward the periphery. The paper provides a simple analysis of correlates of labor supply, as measured by population growth and economic productivity, which is proxied by changes in per capita income.
