Beyond Language Equivalence on Visibly Pushdown Automata
We study (bi)simulation-like preorder/equivalence checking on the class of
visibly pushdown automata and its natural subclasses visibly BPA (Basic Process
Algebra) and visibly one-counter automata. We describe generic methods for
proving complexity upper and lower bounds for a number of studied preorders and
equivalences like simulation, completed simulation, ready simulation, 2-nested
simulation preorders/equivalences and bisimulation equivalence. Our main
results are that all the mentioned equivalences and preorders are
EXPTIME-complete on visibly pushdown automata, PSPACE-complete on visibly
one-counter automata and P-complete on visibly BPA. Our PSPACE lower bound for
visibly one-counter automata improves also the previously known DP-hardness
results for ordinary one-counter automata and one-counter nets. Finally, we
study regularity checking problems for visibly pushdown automata and show that
they can be decided in polynomial time.Comment: Final version of paper, accepted by LMC
On the rational subset problem for groups
We use language theory to study the rational subset problem for groups and
monoids. We show that the decidability of this problem is preserved under graph
of groups constructions with finite edge groups. In particular, it passes
through free products amalgamated over finite subgroups and HNN extensions with
finite associated subgroups. We provide a simple proof of a result of
Grunschlag showing that the decidability of this problem is a virtual property.
We prove further that the problem is decidable for a direct product of a group
G with a monoid M if and only if membership is uniformly decidable for
G-automata subsets of M. It follows that a direct product of a free group with
any abelian group or commutative monoid has decidable rational subset
membership.Comment: 19 page

The paper presents a selection of recently developed and/or used techniques
for equivalence-checking on infinite-state systems, and an up-to-date overview
of existing results (as of September 2004)
Specifying Graph Languages with Type Graphs
We investigate three formalisms to specify graph languages, i.e. sets of
graphs, based on type graphs. First, we are interested in (pure) type graphs,
where the corresponding language consists of all graphs that can be mapped
homomorphically to a given type graph. In this context, we also study languages
specified by restriction graphs and their relation to type graphs. Second, we
extend this basic approach to a type graph logic and, third, to type graphs
with annotations. We present decidability results and closure properties for
each of the formalisms.Comment: (v2): -Fixed some typos -Added more reference
Verification for Timed Automata extended with Unbounded Discrete Data Structures
We study decidability of verification problems for timed automata extended
with unbounded discrete data structures. More detailed, we extend timed
automata with a pushdown stack. In this way, we obtain a strong model that may
for instance be used to model real-time programs with procedure calls. It is
long known that the reachability problem for this model is decidable. The goal
of this paper is to identify subclasses of timed pushdown automata for which
the language inclusion problem and related problems are decidable
Indexed linear logic and higher-order model checking
In recent work, Kobayashi observed that the acceptance by an alternating tree
automaton A of an infinite tree T generated by a higher-order recursion scheme
G may be formulated as the typability of the recursion scheme G in an
appropriate intersection type system associated to the automaton A. The purpose
of this article is to establish a clean connection between this line of work
and Bucciarelli and Ehrhard's indexed linear logic. This is achieved in two
steps. First, we recast Kobayashi's result in an equivalent infinitary
intersection type system where intersection is not idempotent anymore. Then, we
show that the resulting type system is a fragment of an infinitary version of
Bucciarelli and Ehrhard's indexed linear logic. While this work is very
preliminary and does not integrate key ingredients of higher-order
model-checking like priorities, it reveals an interesting and promising
connection between higher-order model-checking and linear logic.Comment: In Proceedings ITRS 2014, arXiv:1503.0437
Universality and Decidability of Number-Conserving Cellular Automata
Number-conserving cellular automata (NCCA) are particularly interesting, both
because of their natural appearance as models of real systems, and because of
the strong restrictions that number-conservation implies. Here we extend the
definition of the property to include cellular automata with any set of states
in \Zset, and show that they can be always extended to ``usual'' NCCA with
contiguous states. We show a way to simulate any one dimensional CA through a
one dimensional NCCA, proving the existence of intrinsically universal NCCA.
Finally, we give an algorithm to decide, given a CA, if its states can be
labeled with integers to produce a NCCA, and to find this relabeling if the
answer is positive.Comment: 13 page
Quadratic Word Equations with Length Constraints, Counter Systems, and Presburger Arithmetic with Divisibility
Word equations are a crucial element in the theoretical foundation of
constraint solving over strings, which have received a lot of attention in
recent years. A word equation relates two words over string variables and
constants. Its solution amounts to a function mapping variables to constant
strings that equate the left and right hand sides of the equation. While the
problem of solving word equations is decidable, the decidability of the problem
of solving a word equation with a length constraint (i.e., a constraint
relating the lengths of words in the word equation) has remained a
long-standing open problem. In this paper, we focus on the subclass of
quadratic word equations, i.e., in which each variable occurs at most twice. We
first show that the length abstractions of solutions to quadratic word
equations are in general not Presburger-definable. We then describe a class of
counter systems with Presburger transition relations which capture the length
abstraction of a quadratic word equation with regular constraints. We provide
an encoding of the effect of a simple loop of the counter systems in the theory
of existential Presburger Arithmetic with divisibility (PAD). Since PAD is
decidable, we get a decision procedure for quadratic words equations with
length constraints for which the associated counter system is \emph{flat}
(i.e., all nodes belong to at most one cycle). We show a decidability result
(in fact, also an NP algorithm with a PAD oracle) for a recently proposed
NP-complete fragment of word equations called regular-oriented word equations,
together with length constraints. Decidability holds when the constraints are
additionally extended with regular constraints with a 1-weak control structure.Comment: 18 page
Eliminating Recursion from Monadic Datalog Programs on Trees
We study the problem of eliminating recursion from monadic datalog programs
on trees with an infinite set of labels. We show that the boundedness problem,
i.e., determining whether a datalog program is equivalent to some nonrecursive
one is undecidable but the decidability is regained if the descendant relation
is disallowed. Under similar restrictions we obtain decidability of the problem
of equivalence to a given nonrecursive program. We investigate the connection
between these two problems in more detail
