    Programming distributed and adaptable autonomous components--the GCM/ProActive framework

    International audienceComponent-oriented software has become a useful tool to build larger and more complex systems by describing the application in terms of encapsulated, loosely coupled entities called components. At the same time, asynchronous programming patterns allow for the development of efficient distributed applications. While several component models and frameworks have been proposed, most of them tightly integrate the component model with the middleware they run upon. This intertwining is generally implicit and not discussed, leading to entangled, hard to maintain code. This article describes our efforts in the development of the GCM/ProActive framework for providing distributed and adaptable autonomous components. GCM/ProActive integrates a component model designed for execution on large-scale environments, with a programming model based on active objects allowing a high degree of distribution and concurrency. This new integrated model provides a more powerful development, composition, and execution environment than other distributed component frameworks. We illustrate that GCM/ProActive is particularly adapted to the programming of autonomic component systems, and to the integration into a service-oriented environment

    Comparison of distributed technologies for defining a distributable and interoperable ETL framework

    Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) are major functionalities in data warehousing. Lack of component distribution and interoperability are the main problems in the ETL area, because ETL components are tightly-coupled in the traditional ETL framework. This paper explores and discusses five popular distributed technologies for the purpose of highlighting the best technology that is capable of overcoming the distribution and interoperability gaps of the traditional ETL framework. Based on the comparison of distributed technologies discussed in this paper, several benefits can be obtained when SOA is used in redefining the ETL framework such as: distribution, interoperability, reusability, portability, and compatibility with legacy systems. These advantages and other SOA specifications are discussed in this paper

    Service Oriented Robotic Architecture for Space Robotics: Design, Testing, and Lessons Learned

    This paper presents the lessons learned from six years of experiments with planetary rover prototypes running the Service Oriented Robotic Architecture (SORA) developed by the Intelligent Robotics Group (IRG) at the NASA Ames Research Center. SORA relies on proven software engineering methods and technologies applied to space robotics. Based on a Service Oriented Architecture and robust middleware, SORA encompasses on-board robot control and a full suite of software tools necessary for remotely operated exploration missions. SORA has been eld tested in numerous scenarios of robotic lunar and planetary exploration. The experiments conducted by IRG with SORA exercise a large set of the constraints encountered in space applications: remote robotic assets, ight relevant science instruments, distributed operations, high network latencies and unreliable or intermittent communication links. In this paper, we present the results of these eld tests in regard to the developed architecture, and discuss its bene ts and limitations

    Methodology for modeling high performance distributed and parallel systems

    Performance modeling of distributed and parallel systems is of considerable importance to the high performance computing community. To achieve high performance, proper task or process assignment and data or file allocation among processing sites is essential. This dissertation describes an elegant approach to model distributed and parallel systems, which combines the optimal static solutions for data allocation with dynamic policies for task assignment. A performance-efficient system model is developed using analytical tools and techniques. The system model is accomplished in three steps. First, the basic client-server model which allows only data transfer is evaluated. A prediction and evaluation method is developed to examine the system behavior and estimate performance measures. The method is based on known product form queueing networks. The next step extends the model so that each site of the system behaves as both client and server. A data-allocation strategy is designed at this stage which optimally assigns the data to the processing sites. The strategy is based on flow deviation technique in queueing models. The third stage considers process-migration policies. A novel on-line adaptive load-balancing algorithm is proposed which dynamically migrates processes and transfers data among different sites to minimize the job execution cost. The gradient-descent rule is used to optimize the cost function, which expresses the cost of process execution at different processing sites. The accuracy of the prediction method and the effectiveness of the analytical techniques is established by the simulations. The modeling procedure described here is general and applicable to any message-passing distributed and parallel system. The proposed techniques and tools can be easily utilized in other related areas such as networking and operating systems.
