Using Synthetic Data to Train Neural Networks is Model-Based Reasoning

We draw a formal connection between using synthetic training data to optimize neural network parameters and approximate, Bayesian, model-based reasoning. In particular, training a neural network using synthetic data can be viewed as learning a proposal distribution generator for approximate inference in the synthetic-data generative model. We demonstrate this connection in a recognition task where we develop a novel Captcha-breaking architecture and train it using synthetic data, demonstrating both state-of-the-art performance and a way of computing task-specific posterior uncertainty. Using a neural network trained this way, we also demonstrate successful breaking of real-world Captchas currently used by Facebook and Wikipedia. Reasoning from these empirical results and drawing connections with Bayesian modeling, we discuss the robustness of synthetic data results and suggest important considerations for ensuring good neural network generalization when training with synthetic data.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

A Maturity Model of Data Modeling in Self-Service Business Intelligence Software

    Get PDF
Although Self-Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) is continually being adopted in various industries, there is a lack of research focused on data modeling in SSBI. This research aims to fill that research gap and propose a maturity model for SSBI data modeling which is generalizeable between different software and applicable for users of all technical backgrounds. Through extensive literature review, a five-tier maturity model was proposed, explained, and instantiated in PowerBI and Tableau. The testing of the model was found to be simple and intuitive, and the research concludes that the model is applicable to enterprise SSBI environments. This research is limited to SSBI software and does not consider architecture specifications such as data warehouse or hardware limitations, and could be expanded in future research to include those considerations

Hardware Support for Advanced Data Management Systems

    Get PDF
This thesis considers the problem of the optimal hardware architecture for advanced data management systems, of which the REL system can be considered a prototype. Exploration of the space of architectures requires a new technique which applies widely varying work loads, performance constraints, and heuristic configuration rules with an analytic queueing network model to develop cost functions which cover a representative range of organizational requirements. The model computes cost functions, which are the ultimate basis for comparison of architectures, from a technology forecast. Thc discussion shows the application of the modeling technique to thirty trial architectures which reflect the major classifications of data base machine architectures and memory technologies. The results suggest practical design considerations for advanced data management systems

MVC-based content management on the cloud

Cloud computing describes a new distributed computing paradigm for IT data and services that involves over-the-Internet provision of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources. While cost reduction and flexibility in storage, services, and maintenance are important considerations when deciding on whether or how to migrate data and applications to the cloud, large organizations like the Department of Defense need to consider the organization and structure of data on the cloud and the operations on such data in order to reap the full benefit of cloud computing. This report describes a cloud adaptation of Model View Controller (MVC) software engineering architectural pattern and its effect on content management in the cloud. We propose an architecture that separates the model, view, and controller aspects of a document thereby allowing greater flexibility, portability, and interoperability for document objects.N6133904WX00137Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Analysis and Architecture Design of DSPACE, a Digital Signal Processor for space applications

    Get PDF
The request of digital signal processing performed on satellites or spacecraft is greatly increased in past years, however the European Space Agency (ESA) has not got a suitable device for these applications made in Europe area. ESA is currently forced to address to United States (US) made alternatives but the exportation of those devices is restricted by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and this places ESA in a dependent position. The DSPACE project aim to solve this lack providing a new Digital Signal Processor (DSP), as an intellectual property, and a software tool-chain to exploit its features. The first part of this thesis work regarded an analysis of the state-of-the-art and the practical solutions in order to identify a target technology and a reference architecture. The second part of this work concerned a detailed definitions of the DSPACE core architecture and features. Moreover a complete decode & dispatch VHDL model, with a formal functional verification, was realized. The third part of this work regarded two caches modelling, the instruction and the data cache, that are two essential components of the DSPACE core. This thesis work was concluded with the first functional simulations coming from the DSPACE model and considerations about the resource occupation of the core

Model-based groupware solution for distributed real-time collaborative 4D planning via teamwork

    Get PDF
Construction planning plays a fundamental role in construction project management that requires team working among planners from a diverse range of disciplines and in geographically dispersed working situations. Model-based four-dimensional (4D) computer-aided design (CAD) groupware, though considered a possible approach to supporting collaborative planning, is still short of effective collaborative mechanisms for teamwork due to methodological, technological and social challenges. Targeting this problem, this paper proposes a model-based groupware solution to enable a group of multidisciplinary planners to perform real-time collaborative 4D planning across the Internet. In the light of the interactive definition method, and its computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) design analysis, the paper discusses the realization of interactive collaborative mechanisms from software architecture, application mode, and data exchange protocol. These mechanisms have been integrated into a groupware solution, which was validated by a planning team in a truly geographically dispersed condition. Analysis of the validation results revealed that the proposed solution is feasible for real-time collaborative 4D planning to gain a robust construction plan through collaborative teamwork. The realization of this solution triggers further considerations about its enhancement for wider groupware applications

The Forecasting Model of Bicycle Parking Demand on Campus Teaching and Office District

AbstractIn order to forecast the demand of the campus teaching and office district bicycle parking generation rate more accurate with the introduction of multi-model, which regarding affects are not carried on more considerations with the other parking demand influencing factor according to the actual investigation and study data. The paper analyzes the three types of regional architecture characteristics of bicycle parking demand, and gives the parking demand - supply forecast model which based on the parking generation rate model. The model considers the trip distance, parking distance, the facility cycling rate and the use factor which are also integrated in the model, thus obtains the number of bicycle parking facility which should construct actually. Finally the paper proposes a calculation example to expound the practical application of this model
