Creating photo-realistic images has been one of the major goals in computer graphics since its early days. Instead of modeling the complexity of nature with standard modeling tools, image-based approaches aim at exploiting real-world footage directly,as they are photo-realistic by definition. A drawback of these approaches has always been that the composition or combination of different sources is a non-trivial task, often resulting in annoying visible artifacts. In this thesis we focus on different techniques to diminish visible artifacts when combining multiple images in a common image domain. The results are either novel images, when dealing with the composition task of multiple images, or novel video sequences rendered in real-time, when dealing with video footage from multiple cameras.Fotorealismus ist seit jeher eines der großen Ziele in der Computergrafik. Anstatt die Komplexität der Natur mit standardisierten Modellierungswerkzeugen nachzubauen, gehen bildbasierte Ansätze den umgekehrten Weg und verwenden reale Bildaufnahmen zur Modellierung, da diese bereits per Definition fotorealistisch sind. Ein Nachteil dieser Variante ist jedoch, dass die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Quellbilder eine nichttriviale Aufgabe darstellt und häufig unangenehm auffallende Artefakte im erzeugten Bild nach sich zieht. In dieser Dissertation werden verschiedene Ansätze verfolgt, um Artefakte zu verhindern oder abzuschwächen, welche durch die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Bilder in einer gemeinsamen Bilddomäne entstehen. Im Ergebnis liefern die vorgestellten Verfahren neue Bilder oder neue Ansichten einer Bildsammlung oder Videosequenz, je nachdem, ob die jeweilige Aufgabe die Komposition mehrerer Bilder ist oder die Kombination mehrerer Videos verschiedener Kameras darstellt

Mapping mission as translation with reference to Michael Polanyi’s heuristic philosophy

My thesis proposes a theological conceptualisation for understanding gospel and culture relationships in the field of Christian mission. I begin by investigating whether the missiological categories of contextualisation and inculturation are adequate for describing how the Christian gospel is offered from one culture to another. Can the categorical metaphor, ‘translation,’ construed conceptually rather than linguistically, add a more fruitful and comprehensive way of understanding how the Christian message is transmitted across cultures? I contend that ‘mission as translation’ incorporates numerous features of contextualisation and inculturation, yet avoids weaknesses of those two interpretations. The incipient theory of mission as translation has been articulated by mission historians, Andrew Walls and Lamin Sanneh, and theologian Kwame Bediako. I use reading of key texts of these scholars to build a conceptual approach to mission as translation. I contrast their translation principles with the work of two Roman Catholic missiologists, Stephen Bevans and Robert Schreiter, proponents of mission as contextualisation. In developing the argument for my thesis, I explore insights gleaned from studying linguistics, hermeneutics and translation studies. I go on to identify three ‘linguistic translation’ features: similarity and difference, transformation, and multiplicity, and then apply Eugene Nida’s communication theory to missional translation. Drawing on heuristic insights from Michael Polanyi, I take Nida’s translation theory further and suggest that relevance theory, interpreted by Ernst-August Gutt, provides a way forward in translation studies. I argue that Polanyi’s notions of discovery and indwelling offer methodological categories to describe how a mission translator pays attention to cultural particulars and integrates them into perceived meaningful patterns. I use Polanyi’s notion of the tacit dimension as the primary hermeneutical tool in understanding mission as translation. Finally, I test mission as translation by applying it to three case studies and conclude by discussing the three ‘linguistic translation’ features in light of Christian mission

Highly automated method for facial expression synthesis

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The synthesis of realistic facial expressions has been an unexplored area for computer graphics scientists. Over the last three decades, several different construction methods have been formulated in order to obtain natural graphic results. Despite these advancements, though, current techniques still require costly resources, heavy user intervention and specific training and outcomes are still not completely realistic. This thesis, therefore, aims to achieve an automated synthesis that will produce realistic facial expressions at a low cost. This thesis, proposes a highly automated approach for achieving a realistic facial expression synthesis, which allows for enhanced performance in speed (3 minutes processing time maximum) and quality with a minimum of user intervention. It will also demonstrate a highly technical and automated method of facial feature detection, by allowing users to obtain their desired facial expression synthesis with minimal physical input. Moreover, it will describe a novel approach to the normalization of the illumination settings values between source and target images, thereby allowing the algorithm to work accurately, even in different lighting conditions. Finally, we will present the results obtained from the proposed techniques, together with our conclusions, at the end of the paper

Mission as Ministry of Reconciliation

The primary reason is that we view “reconciliation” as a new paradigm of mission.
