Cambrian [Marjuman] trilobites (Arthropoda) of the Cow Head, western Newfoundland.
Conglomerates consisting of shelf-derived limestone boulders in debris flows form the fossiliferous strata of the Cow Head Group on the west coast of Newfoundland. These conglomerates have yielded in excess of 20,000 trilobites dated from mid-Cambrian into Ordovician. This study examines 1500 specimens of those trilobites in the order Ptychopariida from the earliest Upper Cambrian, the Marjuman. The Upper and Lower Marjuman are distinctly different, with only 3 genera appearing in both. Each boulder comprises a separate collection and the faunas of most are unique.Ptychoparioid trilobites are found in 15 boulders of the Upper Marjuman and 54 in the Lower. The Upper Marjuman has yielded 21 genera and 37 species, the Lower Marjuman 18 genera and 35 species. Of those, 1 family, 2 genera and 14 species in the Lower are new: the Dineidae fam. nov., Dinea and Rogeraspis gen. nov., and Brassicacephalus rhakion, Bynumia demissa, Dinea bovicephala, D. extremis, Eldoradia batilla, Holmdalia stenis, Kingstonioides delgada, K. grandilabra, Matania brachys, M. catherinae, M. hueva, M. liamae, Prolonchocephalus orcinus and Rogeraspis burkhalteri, sp. nov. In the Upper Marjuman, 1 genus, Kindleia gen. nov., and 9 species are new: Cedaria curta, C. fedora, C. superficialis, Deiracephalus genior, D. intersectus, D. ornatus, Kindleia williamae, Lecanopleura habros, and Matania kindlensis. Fifty-three plates document these and other taxa. Correlation is obtained by comparison with fauna lists reported by Lochman, Palmer and others. Westrop, Ludvigsen and Kindle established an excellent base with their analysis of Agnostoids of the Cow Head upon which this correlation is built. Others are working on the brachiopods. The project will be finalized when the remaining order, the Corynexochida, are documented and incorporated into the correlations
Control of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea Klug in organic fruit growing and possible side effects of control strategies on Aphelinus mali Haldeman and other beneficial insects
The effect of Quassia extract on eggs and larvae of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea
was studied. The efficacy of this extract is mainly due to an oral toxicity to the
neonate sawfly larvae. The main active ingredients, Quassin and Neoquassin, were
tested separately. Wheras Quassin has a considerable efficacy also on older larvae,
Neoquassin is less efficient in this case. While Quassin and Neoquassin are found in
different Quassia sources in varying relations to each other and have different efficacy,
they have to be considered separately in the definition of extract quality by the content of
active ingredients. These findings mean, that the “egg maturity” is not important for application
date. Nevertheless, the application must take place before the larvae hatch. It
was shown that low rates of Quassin (4-6 g/ha) can show very good results in the field,
in other cases the rates necessary for good efficacy are much higher. This corresponds
to farmers experience. Several factors as application technique and the condition of the
blossom must be taken in consideration and will be object of further studies.
The side effects of Quassin, Neoquassin and Quassia extract on Aphelinus mali and
other beneficial arthropods were tested. Quassia is harmless to all organisms tested
In Canada, there are approximately 21,000 deaths and 84,069 hospitalizations related to myocardial infarction (MI) per year, representing approximately Can 2018. The reference case analysis consisted of a probabilistic Monte Carlo simulation. At a mean cost per quality adjusted life year (QALY) gained of Can50,000/QALY. Moreover, the sensitivity analyses showed that the cost-effectiveness of ticagrelor-DAPT was sensitive to the cost of cardiovascular death and the cost of ticagrelor. Assuming a cost of ticagrelor compatible with a generic drug, the 4 durations of persistence with ticagrelor-DAPT are almost guaranteed to be profitable. When a generic cost of ticagrelor was assumed, 3 months, 6 months and 9 months of ticagrelor-DAPT were dominant and 12 months of ticagrelor-DAPT were highly likely to be cost-effective (98.8%). This analysis also conclude that as little as 3 months of ticagrelor-DAPT is likely to be cost-effective compared to 12 months of clopidogrel-DAPT. With a moderate to strong level of evidence, we therefore conclude that no specific intervention is warranted at the provincial policy level to improve persistence rate with ticagrelor treatment after MI
