Applications of Power Electronics
Power electronics technology is still an emerging technology, and it has found its way into many applications, from renewable energy generation (i.e., wind power and solar power) to electrical vehicles (EVs), biomedical devices, and small appliances, such as laptop chargers. In the near future, electrical energy will be provided and handled by power electronics and consumed through power electronics; this not only will intensify the role of power electronics technology in power conversion processes, but also implies that power systems are undergoing a paradigm shift, from centralized distribution to distributed generation. Today, more than 1000 GW of renewable energy generation sources (photovoltaic (PV) and wind) have been installed, all of which are handled by power electronics technology. The main aim of this book is to highlight and address recent breakthroughs in the range of emerging applications in power electronics and in harmonic and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues at device and system levels as discussed in ?robust and reliable power electronics technologies, including fault prognosis and diagnosis technique stability of grid-connected converters and ?smart control of power electronics in devices, microgrids, and at system levels
Power Electronics and Energy Management for Battery Storage Systems
The deployment of distributed renewable generation and e-mobility systems is creating a demand for improved dynamic performance, flexibility, and resilience in electrical grids. Various energy storages, such as stationary and electric vehicle batteries, together with power electronic interfaces, will play a key role in addressing these requests thanks to their enhanced functionality, fast response times, and configuration flexibility. For the large-scale implementation of this technology, the associated enabling developments are becoming of paramount importance. These include energy management algorithms; optimal sizing and coordinated control strategies of different storage technologies, including e-mobility storage; power electronic converters for interfacing renewables and battery systems, which allow for advanced interactions with the grid; and increase in round-trip efficiencies by means of advanced materials, components, and algorithms. This Special Issue contains the developments that have been published b researchers in the areas of power electronics, energy management and battery storage. A range of potential solutions to the existing barriers is presented, aiming to make the most out of these emerging technologies
Advanced Battery Technologies: New Applications and Management Systems
In recent years, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been increasingly contributing to the development of novel engineering systems with energy storage requirements. LIBs are playing an essential role in our society, as they are being used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from consumer electronics, electric mobility, renewable energy storage, biomedical applications, or aerospace systems. Despite the remarkable achievements and applicability of LIBs, there are several features within this technology that require further research and improvements. In this book, a collection of 10 original research papers addresses some of those key features, including: battery testing methodologies, state of charge and state of health monitoring, and system-level power electronics applications. One key aspect to emphasize when it comes to this book is the multidisciplinary nature of the selected papers. The presented research was developed at university departments, institutes and organizations of different disciplines, including Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Computer Science or Material Science, to name a few examples. The overall result is a book that represents a coherent collection of multidisciplinary works within the prominent field of LIBs
A survey of differential flatness-based control applied to renewable energy sources
Conference ProceedingsThis paper presents an overview of various methods used
to minimize the fluctuating impacts of power generated from
renewable energy sources. Several sources are considered in the
study (biomass, wind, solar, hydro and geothermal). Different
control methods applied to their control are cited, alongside some
previous applications. Hence, it further elaborates on the adoptive
control principles, of which includes; Load ballast control, dummy
load control, proportional integral and derivative (PID) control,
proportional integral (PI) control, pulse-width modulation (PWM)
control, buck converter control, boost converter control, pitch
angle control, valve control, the rate of river flow at turbine,
bidirectional diffuser-augmented control and differential flatnessbased
controller. These control operations in renewable energy
power generation are mainly based on a steady-state linear control
approach. However, the flatness based control principle has the
ability to resolve the complex control problem of renewable energy
systems while exploiting their linear properties. Using their
flatness properties, feedback control is easily achieved which
allows for optimal/steady output of the system components. This
review paper highlights the benefits that range from better control
techniques for renewable energy systems to established robust grid
(or standalone generations) connections that can bring immense
benefits to their operation and maintenance costs
Review of Electric Vehicle Charging Technologies, Configurations, and Architectures
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are projected to be one of the major contributors to
energy transition in the global transportation due to their rapid expansion.
The EVs will play a vital role in achieving a sustainable transportation system
by reducing fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However,
high level of EVs integration into the distribution grid has introduced many
challenges for the power grid operation, safety, and network planning due to
the increase in load demand, power quality impacts and power losses. An
increasing fleet of electric mobility requires the advanced charging systems to
enhance charging efficiency and utility grid support. Innovative EV charging
technologies are obtaining much attention in recent research studies aimed at
strengthening EV adoption while providing ancillary services. Therefore,
analysis of the status of EV charging technologies is significant to accelerate
EV adoption with advanced control strategies to discover a remedial solution
for negative grid impacts, enhance desired charging efficiency and grid
support. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current deployment
of EV charging systems, international standards, charging configurations, EV
battery technologies, architecture of EV charging stations, and emerging
technical challenges. The charging systems require a dedicated converter
topology, a control strategy and international standards for charging and grid
interconnection to ensure optimum operation and enhance grid support. An
overview of different charging systems in terms of onboard and off-board
chargers, AC-DC and DC-DC converter topologies, and AC and DC-based charging
station architectures are evaluated
