    Experiments on Chute Flows of Granular Materials

    Experiments on continuous, steady flows of granular materials down an inclined channel or chute were made with the object of acquiring information on the rheological properties of the granular material flow and the nature of the boundary condition on the base of the channel. Specifically measurements were made of the mean material velocities and velocity profiles on all boundaries of the flow using cross-correlation of two neighboring fibre-optic displacement probes. The output from these probes was used to obtain (1) the unsteady or random component of the particle velocity in the longitudinal direction and (2) a measure of the volume fraction of the flow in contact with the base by counting the frequency of passage of the particles. Measurement was also made of the depth of the flow, the mass flow rate and the shear stress on the base. The latter employed a strain-gauged shear force plate built into the base. The experiments are currently in progress and so further data will be presented at a later date. Nevertheless the preliminary data have yielded a number of interesting features

    The Environment for Application Software Integration and Execution, EASIE, provides a methodology and a set of software utility programs to ease the task of coordinating engineering design and analysis codes. EASIE was designed to meet the needs of conceptual design engineers that face the task of integrating many stand-alone engineering analysis programs. Using EASIE, programs are integrated through a relational data base management system. In volume 2, the use of a SYSTEM LIBRARY PROCESSOR is used to construct a DATA DICTIONARY describing all relations defined in the data base, and a TEMPLATE LIBRARY. A TEMPLATE is a description of all subsets of relations (including conditional selection criteria and sorting specifications) to be accessed as input or output for a given application. Together, these form the SYSTEM LIBRARY which is used to automatically produce the data base schema, FORTRAN subroutines to retrieve/store data from/to the data base, and instructions to a generic REVIEWER program providing review/modification of data for a given template. Automation of these functions eliminates much of the tedious, error prone work required by the usual approach to data base integration

The reader should be aware that, although most of the data are accurate, approximations based on engineering judgment and experience are used wherever actual data were unavailable. The approximations are justified by the objective of the study which was to develop a cost/performance model. Assuming that the model is successfully developed and is accepted for use by a body of users, the data base should be expanded and the approximations replaced by actual data

    Rapid, effective access to the increasing volume of information on stratospheric trace gases, both from measurements and model calculations, is important in advancing our knowledge of the Earth's atmosphere. The data have their origins in a variety of sources, ranging from satellite experiments and 2-D model predictions to individual balloon measurements, and are found in a variety of locations and formats. This task focuses on development and operation of an electronic data base for such trace gas data. The objectives are to provide effective access to these diverse data sets; to foster electronic data access, manipulation, and display; and to support periodic assessment and intercomparison activities
