    Ecology of fishes in Upper Newport Bay, California: seasonal dynamics and community structure

    A total of 366 bimonthly (January 1978-January 1979) samples taken with six types of gear (otter trawl, gill net, bag seine, small seine, drop net, square enclosure - all with replication except the gill net) at four stations in upper Newport Bay, California yielded 51,816 fishes belonging to 46 species and weighing over 353 kg. Atherinops affinis (topsmelt) was the most abundant species accounting for 76% of total individuals. Seven species, all of low trophic levels, made up over 97% of the total catch. Mugil cephalus (striped mullet) ranked first in biomass (= 36% of the total) with six species accounting for more than 80% of the total biomass. The largest number of individuals (71%) was collected with the bag seine, the greatest number of species (35) was captured with the otter trawl and the largest percentage of the biomass (56%)was obtained with the gill net. Species richness, number of individuals and biomass were lowest in January (1978 or 1979) or March and highest in July (numbers, biomass) or September (species). Bimonthly diversity (H') values ranged from 0.48 to 2.17 (overall value 1.05) and tended to be inversely related to abundance levels. Species richness was greatest at Station 4 (the lowermost station) and least at Station 1 (the uppermost station). Numbers of individuals and biomass peaked at Station 2 and reached lowest levels at Station 1. Length-frequency analysis of six of the most abundant species indicated utilization of the upper bay by two or more stages in the life history of these species. More than 92,000 eggs belonging to seven taxa and an unknown category and 426 larvae from 20 taxa were collected with a 0.5 m net mounted on an epibenthic sled during the same bimonthly periods and at the same stations as the juvenile/adult samples. Most of the eggs were collected at Station 2 in May with the numbers overwhelmingly dominated by those of Anchoa compressa (deepbody anchovy) (99.7% of total numbers). The most abundant larva was that of Clevelandia ios (arrow goby). Nearly 60% of the total larval catch was made up of members of the family Gobiidae. Larval taxa and individuals were fewest in January (1978). The number of taxa was highest in March, September and January (1979) whereas larval numbers peaked in May. The number of taxa and of individual larvae varied only slightly among the four stations. Asymptotic species accumulation curves indicated adequate sampling of juvenile/adult fishes. Cluster analysis produced eight species groups of resident and periodic species that variously utilize the three main habitats (channel, inshore, pannes) in the upper bay. Species richness and abundance were positively correlated with both temperature and salinity. Temperature, salinity and depth of capture were frequently correlated with individual species abundances and were used in combination to partially explain the spatial utilization of species and species groups. The upper bay fish community is important and worthy of preservation for at least three reasons: 1) it contains species assemblages not duplicated in any other coastal environment; 2) it contains life history stages of a variety of coastal fish species; and 3) it contains large populations of small, low-trophic level species and juveniles of other species which serve as forage for larger, predatory species that are frequently of economic importance. Members of the fish community respond noticeably to altered environmental conditions such as the heavy rainfall (and accompanying low salinity and high turbidity) that occurred during the early months of 1978. The short and long term, as yet often unpredictable, fluctuations in the populations emphasize the need for periodic monitoring and for the development of a mathematical model of the fish community if it is to be thoroughly understood and properly managed.     Detecting volcanic sulfur dioxide plumes in the Northern Hemisphere using the Brewer spectrophotometer, other networks, and satellite observations

    This paper demonstrates that SO 2 columnar amounts have significantly increased following the five largest volcanic eruptions of the past decade in the Northern Hemisphere. A strong positive signal was detected by all the existing networks either ground based (Brewer, EARLINET, AirBase) or from satellites (OMI, GOME-2). The study particularly examines the adequacy of the existing Brewer network to detect SO 2 plumes of volcanic origin in comparison to other networks and satellite platforms. The comparison with OMI and 45 GOME-2 SO 2 space-borne retrievals shows statistically significant agreement between the Brewer network data and the collocated satellite overpasses. It is shown that the Brewer instrument is capable of detecting significant columnar SO 2 increases following large volcanic eruptions, when SO 2 levels rise well above the instrumental noise of daily observations, estimated to be of the order of 2 DU. A model exercise from the MACC project shows that the large increases of SO 2 over Europe following the Bárðarbunga eruption in Iceland were not caused by local sources or ship emissions but are clearly linked to the eruption. We propose that by combining Brewer data with that from other networks and satellites, a useful tool aided by trajectory analyses and modeling could be created which can be used to forecast high SO 2 values both at ground level and in air flight corridors following future eruptions

    A fifty year record of winter glacier melt events in southern Chile, 38°–42°S

    Little is known about the frequency and potential mass balance impact of winter glacier melt events. In this study, daily atmospheric temperature soundings from the Puerto Montt radiosonde (41.43°S) are used to reconstruct winter melting events at the glacier equilibrium line altitude in the 38°–42°S region of southern Chile, between 1960 and 2010. The representativeness of the radiosonde temperatures to near-surface glacier temperatures is demonstrated using meteorological records from close to the equilibrium line on two glaciers in the region over five winters. Using a degree-day model we estimate an average of 0.28 m of melt and 21 melt days in the 15 June–15 September period each year, with high inter-annual variability. The majority of melt events are associated with midlatitude migratory high pressure systems crossing Chile and northwesterly flows, that force adiabatic compression and warm advection, respectively. There are no trends in the frequency or magnitude of melt events over the period of record, but the annual frequency of winter melt days shows a significant, although rather weak and probably non-linear, relationship to late winter and early spring values of a multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation Index (MEI)

    Development and Daily Management of an Explicit Strategy of Nonuse of Antimicrobial Drugs in Twelve Danish Organic Dairy Herds

    Promotion of animal health and well-being at the individual animal and herd level is an important goal in organic farming. At the same time, chemical products affecting the natural balance among living organisms are prohibited in all areas of the organic farm. From an animal welfare point of view, however, no animal must suffer. Therefore, veterinary drugs are allowed under the European Union’s regulations for organic farming, despite the fact that they are powerful cell toxins affecting both pathogenic and necessary bacteria, and as such in organic terminology, are regarded as “chemical” or “artificial” products. In this article, we present and discuss interviews with 12 Danish organic dairy producers who claim that minimized use or nonuse of antimicrobial drugs is an explicit goal. The dairy producers were at different levels with regard to reduced antimicrobial treatment. An explicit strategy of no antimicrobial treatments is based primarily on a long-term effort to improve herd health, and secondarily, on finding alternative treatments for diseased animals. Improved hygiene, outdoor access, use of nursing cows, and blinding of chronic mastitis quarters were the main techniques in developing a strategy of not using antimicrobial treatments in the herd by dairy producers. Producers’ perception of disease changed from something unavoidable to a disturbing break in the daily rhythm that often could have been avoided. Change toward a nonantimicrobial strategy was gradual and stepwise. All dairy producers in this study desired to preserve the possibility of using antimicrobial drugs in emergencies

    Glycaemic effects of non-statin lipid-lowering therapies

    Since the publication of the JUPITER trial, attention has been focused on the adverse glycemic effects of statin therapy. Although the modest increase in the risk of new diabetes mellitus is outweighed by the reduction in cardiovascular events for statins, emerging biochemical and genetic links between lipid metabolism and glycemic control raise the prospect of a broader diabetogenic effect of lipid-lowering therapies. For the novel and powerful PCSK9-inhibitor class available evidence does not support a major glycaemic effect with the results of large scale trials awaited although preliminary genetic data does suggest a link. In contrast, there is clear evidence of a diabetogenic effect for the now outdated but well-studied niacin. For ezetimibe and fibrates, evidence is scarce but currently broadly unconcerning. For now, the glycemic effects of lipid-lowering therapies should have a limited influence on clinical decision-making. Further study in this topical area is needed

    Physical and chemical weathering rates and CO2 consumption in a tropical lateritic environment: the upper Niger basin

    The chemical composition of Niger river water measured bimonthly at Bamako Mali. during the period 1990–1992 provides an estimate of present weathering rates in the upper Niger basin. The dominant weathering process is kaolinite formation ‘monosiallitization’.. However, seasonal variations promote gibbsite formation in the rainy season September. and smectite development in the dry season May. The results show that lateritic profiles continue to develop even during very dry episodes. The rate of profile development, calculated as the difference between the chemical weathering rate at the base of the soil profile and mechanical erosion rate at the soil surface, is about 1.3 to 3.7 mrMyr. A comparison between 43 river basins of the world shows that, for similar runoff, the CO2 flux consumed by silicate weathering is about two times lower in lateritic areas than in nonlateritic zones

    An Experimental Investigation of the Performance of the Nitrogen Tetroxide-Hydrazine System in the Oxidizer-Rich and Fuel-Rich Regions

    The results of an experimental program directed toward determining some of the operational characteristics of the nitrogen tetroxide-hydrazine propellant system under oxidizer-rich and fuel-rich conditions are reported. Data are presented for the mixture-ratio ranges of 0 to 0.55 at a nominal chamber pressure of 300 psia and characteristic chamber length of 250 in., and at mixture ratios of 5.9 to 13.0 at nominal chamber pressures of 400 and 500 psia and characteristic chamber lengths of 100 and 3900 in. The relationship of the actual performance data obtained in each region with those predicted from thermochemical performance calculations is presented. From this comparison, it is concluded that in neither region are equilibrium conditions obtained and that utilization of performance data obtained from assumptions of equilibrium will lead to serious errors. In the oxidizer-rich region investigated, temperatures considerably below those predicted occur throughout the range of mixture ratios investigated because of the lack of exothermic dissociation of the nitrogen oxides. In the fuel-rich region, below a mixture ratio of 0.3, temperatures considerably higher than those predicted occur because of the lack of endothermic dissociation of ammonia
