    A review of the leader approach for delivering the rural development programme for England: a report for Defra

    This report, commissioned by the Rural Communities Policy Unit at Defra, sets out the findings of a review of the Leader approach in England. The focus of the review is the impact of Leader in contributing to the delivery of the Rural Development Programme (RDP) in England, in order to inform the future Leader approach to delivering rural policy. The research is primarily based on a review of existing literature and in-depth qualitative research with Local Action Groups and other stakeholders involved in delivering or benefiting from the Leader approach. The review focuses on four key issues: 1) Evidence to support the rationale for use of EU resources to enable rural development – justifying intervention for the current programme and informing choices about interventions in the next programme 2) Evidence on the extent to which interventions have been effective to date and where future resources can be targeted 3) Evidence to provide an assessment of the impact of RDPE spend (2007-13) on outcomes – with reference to delivery mechanisms 4) Evidence to support prioritisation of activities to be funded under the next programme mapped against the six EU wide priorities for 2014-2020 and inform decisions about future delivery models

The project aim is to investigate new methodologies by means of whose, develop an integrated framework able to enhance the use of Magnetic Resonance Images, in order to support clinical experts in the treatment of patients with brain Glial tumor. Both the most common uses of MRI technology for non-invasive brain inspection were analyzed. From the Functional point of view, the goal has been to provide tools for an objective reliable and non-presumptive assessment of the brain’s areas locations, to preserve them as much as possible at surgery. From the Structural point of view, methodologies for fully automatic brain segmentation and recognition of the tumoral areas, for evaluating the tumor volume, the spatial distribution and to be able to infer correlation with other clinical data or trace growth trend, have been studied. Each of the proposed methods has been thoroughly assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively. All the Medical Imaging and Pattern Recognition algorithmic solutions studied for this Ph.D. Thesis have been integrated in GliCInE: Glioma Computerized Inspection Environment, which is a MATLAB prototype of an integrated analysis environment that oïŹ€ers, in addition to all the functionality speciïŹcally described in this Thesis, a set of tools needed to manage Functional and Structural Magnetic Resonance Volumes and ancillary data related to the acquisition and the patient.openInformaticaPedoia, ValentinaPedoia, Valentin

    Methods for the Analysis of Matched Molecular Pairs and Chemical Space Representations

    Compound optimization is a complex process where different properties are optimized to increase the biological activity and therapeutic effects of a molecule. Frequently, the structure of molecules is modified in order to improve their property values. Therefore, computational analysis of the effects of structure modifications on property values is of great importance for the drug discovery process. It is also essential to analyze chemical space, i.e., the set of all chemically feasible molecules, in order to find subsets of molecules that display favorable property values. This thesis aims to expand the computational repertoire to analyze the effect of structure alterations and visualize chemical space. Matched molecular pairs are defined as pairs of compounds that share a large common substructure and only differ by a small chemical transformation. They have been frequently used to study property changes caused by structure modifications. These analyses are expanded in this thesis by studying the effect of chemical transformations on the ionization state and ligand efficiency, both measures of great importance in drug design. Additionally, novel matched molecular pairs based on retrosynthetic rules are developed to increase their utility for prospective use of chemical transformations in compound optimization. Further, new methods based on matched molecular pairs are described to obtain preliminary SAR information of screening hit compounds and predict the potency change caused by a chemical transformation. Visualizations of chemical space are introduced to aid compound optimization efforts. First, principal component plots are used to rationalize a matched molecular pair based multi-objective compound optimization procedure. Then, star coordinate and parallel coordinate plots are introduced to analyze drug-like subspaces, where compounds with favorable property values can be found. Finally, a novel network-based visualization of high-dimensional property space is developed. Concluding, the applications developed in this thesis expand the methodological spectrum of computer-aided compound optimization

    In the last decade, the Industrial Revolution 4.0 brought flexible supply chains and flexible design projects to the forefront. Nevertheless, the recent pandemic, the accompanying economic problems, and the resulting supply problems have further increased the role of logistics and supply chains. Therefore, planning and scheduling procedures that can respond flexibly to changed circumstances have become more valuable both in logistics and projects. There are already several competing criteria of project and logistic process planning and scheduling that need to be reconciled. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that even more emphasis needs to be placed on taking potential risks into account. Flexibility and resilience are emphasized in all decision-making processes, including the scheduling of logistic processes, activities, and projects
