Allantoin Crystal Formation in Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Females.
Bagrada hilaris is a polyphagous herbivore reported as an invasive pest in the United States. During the course of dissecting Burmeister hilaris unique crystals were observed in both the midgut and oviducts. Crystals were identified using X-ray diffraction techniques. Both acicular (i.e., needle-like, slender, and/or tapered) and cubic (i.e., cube shaped) crystals were observed in six of 75 individuals examined (8.0%). The crystals were mainly observed in females (6.7%), followed by males (1.3%) with no crystals observed in the minimal number of nymphs examined (0%). Crystals of both types were detected in the midgut and lateral oviducts of the females and midgut in males. The acicular crystals often appeared as distinct bundles when present in the midgut and oviducts. Crystals varied in size with the acicular crystals ranging from 0.12 mm to 0.5 mm in length although the cubic crystals ranged in length from 0.25 mm to over 1.0 mm with widths of ∼0.25 mm. The cubic crystals were identified as allantoin although the acicular crystals were most likely dl-allantoin in combination with halite. While allantoin in a soluble form is often found in insect tissues and excreta; being present as a crystal, especially in such a large form, is curious and raises some interesting questions. More research is warranted to further understand mechanisms associated with such crystal formation in B. hilaris and can lead to a better understanding of the excretory process in this species and the role allantoin plays in the elimination of excess nitrogen
Association between cholesterol-phospholipid vesicles and cholesterol crystals in human gallbladder bile
Rapid aggregation of cholesterol-phospholipid vesicles in gallbladder bile seems to be the first event in the production of cholesterol crystals, a prerequisite for cholesterol gallstone formation. We examined the amount of these vesicles in 33 human gallbladder biles in relation to biliary lipid composition and to the presence of cholesterol crystals. Biliary microscopy detected cholesterol crystals in all 19 biles from patients with cholesterol gallstones but in none of 14 biles from patients with pigment stones. Gel chromatography was used to separate vesicles and micelles in the native bile with an eluting buffer containing 10 mM sodium cholate to prevent disruption of micellar lipids. Cholesterol, phospholipid and bile salt concentrations were measured in every fraction collected. Bile acid, phospholipid, cholesterol and total lipid concentrations were not significantly different in samples with and without cholesterol crystals. The cholesterol saturation index (1.4 ± 0.11 vs. 1.0 ± 0.08) was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in biles with crystals than without crystals. Gel filtration revealed a vesicular peak in addition to micellar fraction in 18 (23.1 ± 3.2% of total cholesterol) of the 19 biles with crystals but only in three (15.7 ± 2.4% of total cholesterol) of 14 biles without crystals. There was no relation between biliary lipid concentration or the cholesterol saturation index and the percentage of vesicular cholesterol in biles with or without crystals. The close association of vesicles and crystals in human gallbladder bile supports the contention that vesicles are important in the initial nucleation of cholesterol monohydrate crystals
Demazure crystals, Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals, and the energy function
It has previously been shown that, at least for non-exceptional Kac-Moody Lie
algebras, there is a close connection between Demazure crystals and tensor
products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals. In particular, certain Demazure
crystals are isomorphic as classical crystals to tensor products of
Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals via a canonically chosen isomorphism. Here we
show that this isomorphism intertwines the natural affine grading on Demazure
crystals with a combinatorially defined energy function. As a consequence, we
obtain a formula of the Demazure character in terms of the energy function,
which has applications to Macdonald polynomials and q-deformed Whittaker

One-dimensional Model of a Gamma Klystron
A new scheme for amplification of coherent gamma rays is proposed. The key
elements are crystalline undulators - single crystals with periodically bent
crystallographic planes exposed to a high energy beam of charged particles
undergoing channeling inside the crystals. The scheme consists of two such
crystals separated by a vacuum gap. The beam passes the crystals successively.
The particles perform undulator motion inside the crystals following the
periodic shape of the crystallographic planes. Gamma rays passing the crystals
parallel to the beam get amplified due to interaction with the particles inside
the crystals. The term `gamma klystron' is proposed for the scheme because its
operational principles are similar to those of the optical klystron. A more
simple one-crystal scheme is considered as well for the sake of comparison. It
is shown that the gamma ray amplification in the klystron scheme can be reached
at considerably lower particle densities than in the one-crystal scheme,
