    Enterprise Architecture (EA) has been identified as a means to Business-/IT-Alignment, cost reduction or to facilitate change. Research has been focusing on the effectiveness of EA management while the enterprise architecting process is the process of developing, managing, utilizing and maintaining architectural descriptions (ADs) for EA. In this paper we present the results of a literature review on the process of enterprise architecting. Our research contribution is a consolidated view on the challenges and issues arising throughout the architecting process

    Goal-oriented requirements modeling as a means to address stakeholder-related issues in EA

    In this paper we explore goal-oriented requirements engineering (GORE) as a means to address stakeholder-related issues in the enterprise architecting process. We elaborate on a recent literature analysis on enterprise architecting issues. We refine this literature analysis results by identifying problem areas that we consider solvable by increasing the focus on the stakeholders in EA. We develop a conceptual model, which we use to provide reasoning about means to foster stakeholder orientation and thereby to address stakeholder-related issues. We argue that a stronger focus on the stakeholders‟ benefits EA and that this increased stakeholder orientation can be reached by leveraging intentional modeling used in software engineering

    A Survey of Systems and Improvement Approaches for Psychological Healthcare

    This paper reviews the literature to date that uses industrial and systems engineering and operations management methods to improve psychological healthcare in the military setting as well as in the civilian sector. The study findings are categorized using an Enterprise Architecture framework; the categorization highlights the enterprise architecting views that have been more thoroughly studied and those areas that have not been addressed as extensively by the present research. The review also found that methods based in industrial and systems engineering and operations management concepts related to improvements in policy may be developed more holistically in the both the military and civilian sectors. In conclusion, methods used to improve psychological healthcare in both sectors may be transferable across sectors and should be considered for to the improvement of psychological health at large

    15 Years of Enterprise Architecting at HICSS: Revisiting the Critical Problems

    The Enterprise Architecture (EA) minitrack has been a mainstay of HICSS for the past 15 years. The methodology, tools, and processes of enterprise architecting have evolved during that period. In 2005, Kaisler and Armour identified some critical challenges in modeling, management, and maintenance for EA that needed attention to ensure a viable technical discipline. Over 15 years, we have accepted 93 papers for presentation. Reviewing these papers and drawing up on our experience over the past 15 years, we conclude that some progress has been made, some challenges remain to be addressed, and some new challenges have emerged. This paper revises existing challenges and identifies additional challenges to be addressed in the next 10 years

    ARCHITECTURE WORK: MODES OF ARCHITECTING IN LARGE-SCALE INFRASTRUCTURES

    IT architecture forms the digital core of contemporary organisations; thus, architecture work directly concerns the transformation of these organisations. The literature on architecture work and architecting has identified the principles, styles and characteristics that define the policy ideals of architecture work and has demonstrated how these drivers play out in real-world projects. With an in-depth case study, we add to this literature by investigating the multilevel challenges that architects address in transforming large-scale infrastructures and how major challenges come to the surface during the architecting process. Our empirical evidence comes from our longitudinal investigation in a large health region in Norway. We offer two contributions. First, identification and a rich description of three modes of architecting framed as functional, spatial and temporal dualities. Second, we integrate the empirical data into a process model and theorise how contextual and professional drivers are transformed through the architecting modes and form the actual results

In this paper, embedded, interconnected, open, and heterogeneous control systems are in focus, formally referred to as Federated Embedded Systems. To place FES into a context, a review of some related research directions is presented. This review includes such concepts as systems of systems, cyber-physical systems, ubiquitous computing, internet of things, and multi-agent systems.     Towards a Light-weight Enterprise Architecture Approach for Building Transformational Preparedness

    The need for business agility in order to cope with the increasing rate of changes brought by disruptive technologies and paradigms is more stringent than ever; unfortunately however, it also encounters many hurdles. To start with, typical strategic transformation planning featuring successive specify-design-implement phases is no longer suitable, as the resulting sequentially staged processes can no longer catch up with the changes in internal structure and external environment. The blurring of top organisational role boundaries in regards to the allocation of management and architecture skillsets is another issue significantly affecting agility. Finally, the lack of structure and integration of business transformation and architecting methodologies offered by various disciplines and vendors affects the ability to use them for specific endeavours. This paper elaborates on and illustrates the above-mentioned problems through a case study and proposes a way to solve them in a holistic, lifecycle-aware manner using a ‘lightweight’ architectural framework approach

    Status of Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) Implementation within the Aeronautical Systems Center (ASC)

    The purpose of this research was to identify the current status of the use of the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) systems architecture products within the Aeronautical Systems Center (ASC) program offices. There are regulatory requirements dictating the creation of DoDAF products as annexes to programmatic documentation, such as the Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (JCIDS) requirement for systems architectures as annexes for acquisition milestone decision documentation. In addition, the DoDAF itself identifies several products as being highly applicable for the development of acquisition strategies. This thesis investigated the use of systems architectures, and particularly DoDAF products, within the context of Air Force weapon systems acquisitions, as represented by ASC. The research indicated two conclusions: while programs required to follow the new acquisition processes are doing so, very few are employing systems architectures systematically, and at this point, at least within ASC, the benefits to acquisition program management personnel derived from an architectural context are not yet being realized. These conclusions result in several recommendations to ASC, the DoDAF Working Group, and the systems engineering community in general in terms of making systems architectures the standard way of doing business within Air Force weapon system acquisitions efforts. Specific procurement success stories are documented, including the Airborne Electronic Attack (AEA), the B-2 Group, and the Tanker Modernization Squadron
