An audio-based sports video segmentation and event detection algorithm
In this paper, we present an audio-based event detection algorithm shown to be effective when applied to Soccer video. The main benefit of this approach is the ability to recognise patterns that display high levels of crowd response correlated to key events. The soundtrack from a Soccer sequence is first parameterised using Mel-frequency Cepstral coefficients. It is then segmented into homogenous components using a windowing algorithm with a decision process based on Bayesian model selection. This decision process eliminated the need for defining a heuristic set of rules for segmentation. Each audio segment is then labelled using a series of Hidden Markov model (HMM) classifiers, each a representation of one of 6 predefined semantic content classes found in Soccer video. Exciting events are identified as those segments belonging to a crowd cheering class. Experimentation indicated that the algorithm was more effective for classifying crowd response when compared to traditional model-based segmentation and classification techniques
Indexing of fictional video content for event detection and summarisation
This paper presents an approach to movie video indexing that utilises audiovisual analysis to detect important and meaningful temporal video segments, that we term events. We consider three event classes, corresponding to dialogues, action sequences, and montages, where the latter also includes musical sequences. These three event classes are intuitive for a viewer to understand and recognise whilst accounting for over 90% of the content of most movies. To detect events we leverage traditional filmmaking principles and map these to a set of computable low-level audiovisual features. Finite state machines (FSMs) are used to detect when temporal sequences of specific features occur. A set of heuristics, again inspired by filmmaking conventions, are then applied to the output of multiple FSMs to detect the required events. A movie search system, named MovieBrowser, built upon this approach is also described. The overall approach is evaluated against a ground truth of over twenty-three hours of movie content drawn from various genres and consistently obtains high precision and recall for all event classes. A user experiment designed to evaluate the usefulness of an event-based structure for both searching and browsing movie archives is also described and the results indicate the usefulness of the proposed approach

Models for discriminating image blur from loss of contrast
Observers can discriminate between blurry and low-contrast images (Morgan, 2017). Wang and Simoncelli (2004) demonstrated that a code for blur is inherent to the phase relationships between localized pattern detectors of different scale. To test whether human observers actually use local phase coherence when discriminating between image blur and loss of contrast, we compared phase-scrambled chessboards with unscrambled chessboards. Although both stimuli had identical amplitude spectra, local phase coherence was disrupted by phase-scrambling. Human observers were required to concurrently detect and identify (as contrast or blur) image manipulations in the 2x2 forced-choice paradigm (Nachmias & Weber, 1975; Watson & Robson, 1981) traditionally considered to be a litmus test for "labelled lines" (i.e. detection mechanisms that can be distinguished on the basis of their preferred stimuli). Phase scrambling reduced some observersā ability to discriminate between blur and a reduction in contrast. However, none of our observers produced data consistent with Watson & Robsonās most stringent test for labelled lines, regardless whether phases were scrambled or not. Models of performance fit significantly better when either a) the blur detector also responded to contrast modulations, b) the contrast detector also responded to blur modulations, or c) noise in the two detectors was anticorrelate
Unsupervised routine discovery in egocentric photo-streams
The routine of a person is defined by the occurrence of activities throughout
different days, and can directly affect the person's health. In this work, we
address the recognition of routine related days. To do so, we rely on
egocentric images, which are recorded by a wearable camera and allow to monitor
the life of the user from a first-person view perspective. We propose an
unsupervised model that identifies routine related days, following an outlier
detection approach. We test the proposed framework over a total of 72 days in
the form of photo-streams covering around 2 weeks of the life of 5 different
camera wearers. Our model achieves an average of 76% Accuracy and 68% Weighted
F-Score for all the users. Thus, we show that our framework is able to
recognise routine related days and opens the door to the understanding of the
behaviour of people
