    Efficient Actor Recovery Paradigm For Wireless Sensor And Actor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are becoming widely used worldwide. Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks (WSANs) represent a special category of WSNs wherein actors and sensors collaborate to perform specific tasks. WSANs have become one of the most preeminent emerging type of WSNs. Sensors with nodes having limited power resources are responsible for sensing and transmitting events to actor nodes. Actors are high-performance nodes equipped with rich resources that have the ability to collect, process, transmit data and perform various actions. WSANs have a unique architecture that distinguishes them from WSNs. Due to the characteristics of WSANs, numerous challenges arise. Determining the importance of factors usually depends on the application requirements. The actor nodes are the spine of WSANs that collaborate to perform the specific tasks in an unsubstantiated and uneven environment. Thus, there is a possibility of high failure rate in such unfriendly scenarios due to several factors such as power fatigue of devices, electronic circuit failure, software errors in nodes or physical impairment of the actor nodes and inter-actor connectivity problem. It is essential to keep inter-actor connectivity in order to insure network connectivity. Thus, it is extremely important to discover the failure of a cut-vertex actor and network-disjoint in order to improve the Quality-of-Service (QoS). For network recovery process from actor node failure, optimal re-localization and coordination techniques should take place. In this work, we propose an efficient actor recovery (EAR) paradigm to guarantee the contention-free traffic-forwarding capacity. The EAR paradigm consists of Node Monitoring and Critical Node Detection (NMCND) algorithm that monitors the activities of the nodes to determine the critical node. In addition, it replaces the critical node with backup node prior to complete node-failure which helps balances the network performance. The packet is handled using Network Integration and Message Forwarding (NIMF) algorithm that determines the source of forwarding the packets (Either from actor or sensor). This decision-making capability of the algorithm controls the packet forwarding rate to maintain the network for longer time. Furthermore, for handling the proper routing strategy, Priority-Based Routing for Node Failure Avoidance (PRNFA) algorithm is deployed to decide the priority of the packets to be forwarded based on the significance of information available in the packet. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed EAR paradigm, we compare the performance of our proposed work with state-of the art localization algorithms. Our experimental results show superior performance in regards to network life, residual energy, reliability, sensor/ actor recovery time and data recovery

    LOCALIZED MOVEMENT CONTROL CONNECTIVITY RESTORATION ALGORITHMS FOR WIRELESS SENSOR AND ACTOR NETWORKS

    Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks (WSANs) are gaining an increased interest because of their suitability for mission-critical applications that require autonomous and intelligent interaction with the environment. Hazardous application environments such as forest fire monitoring, disaster management, search and rescue, homeland security, battlefield reconnaissance, etc. make actors susceptible to physical damage. Failure of a critical (i.e. cut-vertex) actor partitions the inter-actor network into disjointed segments while leaving a coverage hole. Maintaining inter-actor connectivity is extremely important in mission-critical applications of WSANs where actors have to quickly plan an optimal coordinated response to detected events. Some proactive approaches pursued in the literature deploy redundant nodes to provide fault tolerance; however, this necessitates a large actor count that leads to higher cost and becomes impractical. On the other hand, the harsh environment strictly prohibits an external intervention to replace a failed node. Meanwhile, reactive approaches might not be suitable for time-sensitive applications. The autonomous and unattended nature of WSANs necessitates a self-healing and agile recovery process that involves existing actors to mend the severed inter-actor connectivity by reconfiguring the topology. Moreover, though the possibility of simultaneous multiple actor failure is rare, it may be precipitated by a hostile environment and disastrous events. With only localized information, recovery from such failures is extremely challenging. Furthermore, some applications may impose application-level constraints while recovering from a node failure. In this dissertation, we address the challenging connectivity restoration problem while maintaining minimal network state information. We have exploited the controlled movement of existing (internal) actors to restore the lost connectivity while minimizing the impact on coverage. We have pursued distributed greedy heuristics. This dissertation presents four novel approaches for recovering from node failure. In the first approach, volunteer actors exploit their partially utilized transmission power and reposition themselves in such a way that the connectivity is restored. The second approach identifies critical actors in advance, designates them preferably as noncritical backup nodes that replace the failed primary if such contingency arises in the future. In the third approach, we design a distributed algorithm that recovers from a special case of multiple simultaneous failures. The fourth approach factors in application-level constraints on the mobility of actors while recovering from node failure and strives to minimize the impact of critical node failure on coverage and connectivity. The performance of proposed approaches is analyzed and validated through extensive simulations. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of proposed approaches that outperform the best contemporary schemes found in literature

    A cross-layer approach for optimizing the efficiency of wireless sensor and actor networks

    Recent development has lead to the emergence of distributed Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks (WSAN), which are capable of observing the physical environment, processing the data, making decisions based on the observations and performing appropriate actions. WSANs represent an important extension of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and may comprise a large number of sensor nodes and a smaller number of actor nodes. The sensor nodes are low-cost, low energy, battery powered devices with restricted sensing, computational and wireless communication capabilities. Actor nodes are resource richer with superior processing capabilities, higher transmission powers and a longer battery life. A basic operational scenario of a typical WSAN application follows the following sequence of events. The physical environment is periodically sensed and evaluated by the sensor nodes. The sensed data is then routed towards an actor node. Upon receiving sensed data, an actor node performs an action upon the physical environment if necessary, i.e. if the occurrence of a disturbance or critical event has been detected. The specific characteristics of sensor and actor nodes combined with some stringent application constraints impose unique requirements for WSANs. The fundamental challenges for WSANs are to achieve low latency, high energy efficiency and high reliability. The latency and energy efficiency requirements are in a trade-off relationship. The communication and coordination inside WSANs is managed via a Communication Protocol Stack (CPS) situated on every node. The requirements of low latency and energy efficiency have to be addressed at every layer of the CPS to ensure overall feasibility of the WSAN. Therefore, careful design of protocol layers in the CPS is crucial in attempting to meet the unique requirements and handle the abovementioned trade-off relationship in WSANs. The traditional CPS, comprising the application, network, medium access control and physical layer, is a layered protocol stack with every layer, a predefined functional entity. However, it has been found that for similar types of networks with similar stringent network requirements, the strictly layered protocol stack approach performs at a sub-optimal level with regards to network efficiency. A modern cross-layer paradigm, which proposes the employment of interactions between layers in the CPS, has recently attracted a lot of attention. The cross-layer approach promotes network efficiency optimization and promises considerable performance gains. It is found that in literature, the adoption of this cross-layer paradigm has not yet been considered for WSANs. In this dissertation, a complete cross-layer enabled WSAN CPS is developed that features the adoption of the cross-layer paradigm towards promoting optimization of the network efficiency. The newly proposed cross-layer enabled CPS entails protocols that incorporate information from other layers into their local decisions. Every protocol layer provides information identified as beneficial to another layer(s) in the CPS via a newly proposed Simple Cross-Layer Framework (SCLF) for WSANs. The proposed complete cross-layer enabled WSAN CPS comprises a Cross-Layer enabled Network-Centric Actuation Control with Data Prioritization (CL-NCAC-DP) application layer (APPL) protocol, a Cross-Layer enabled Cluster-based Hierarchical Energy/Latency-Aware Geographic Routing (CL-CHELAGR) network layer (NETL) protocol and a Cross-Layer enabled Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Minimum Preamble Sampling and Duty Cycle Doubling (CL-CSMA-MPS-DCD) medium access control layer (MACL) protocol. Each of these protocols builds on an existing simple layered protocol that was chosen as a basis for development of the cross-layer enabled protocols. It was found that existing protocols focus primarily on energy efficiency to ensure maximum network lifetime. However, most WSAN applications require latency minimization to be considered with the same importance. The cross-layer paradigm provides means of facilitating the optimization of both latency and energy efficiency. Specifically, a solution to the latency versus energy trade-off is given in this dissertation. The data generated by sensor nodes is prioritised by the APPL and depending on the delay-sensitivity, handled in a specialised manor by every layer of the CPS. Delay-sensitive data packets are handled in order to achieve minimum latency. On the other hand, delay-insensitive non critical data packets are handled in such a way as to achieve the highest energy efficiency. In effect, either latency minimization or energy efficiency receives an elevated precedence according to the type of data that is to be handled. Specifically, the cross-layer enabled APPL protocol provides information pertaining to the delay-sensitivity of sensed data packets to the other layers. Consequently, when a data packet is detected as highly delay-sensitive, the cross-layer enabled NETL protocol changes its approach from energy efficient routing along the maximum residual energy path to routing along the fastest path towards the cluster-head actor node for latency minimizing of the specific packet. This is done by considering information (contained in the SCLF neighbourhood table) from the MACL that entails wakeup schedules and channel utilization at neighbour nodes. Among the added criteria, the next-hop node is primarily chosen based on the shortest time to wakeup. The cross-layer enabled MACL in turn employs a priority queue and a temporary duty cycle doubling feature to enable rapid relaying of delay-sensitive data. Duty cycle doubling is employed whenever a sensor node’s APPL state indicates that it is part of a critical event reporting route. When the APPL protocol state (found in the SCLF information pool) indicates that the node is not part of the critical event reporting route anymore, the MACL reverts back to promoting energy efficiency by disengaging duty cycle doubling and re-employing a combination of a very low duty cycle and preamble sampling. The APPL protocol conversely considers the current queue size of the MACL and temporarily halts the creation of data packets (only if the sensed value is non critical) to prevent a queue overflow and ease congestion at the MACL By simulation it was shown that the cross-layer enabled WSAN CPS consistently outperforms the layered CPS for various network conditions. The average end-to-end latency of delay-sensitive critical data packets is decreased substantially. Furthermore, the average end-to-end latency of delay-insensitive data packets is also decreased. Finally, the energy efficiency performance is decreased by a tolerable insignificant minor margin as expected. The trivial increase in energy consumption is overshadowed by the high margin of increase in latency performance for delay-sensitive critical data packets. The newly proposed cross-layer CPS achieves an immense latency performance increase for WSANs, while maintaining excellent energy efficiency. It has hence been shown that the adoption of the cross-layer paradigm by the WSAN CPS proves hugely beneficial with regards to the network efficiency performance.     An Energy Efficient Simultaneous-Node Repositioning Algorithm for Mobile Sensor Networks

    Recently, wireless sensor network (WSN) applications have seen an increase in interest. In search and rescue, battlefield reconnaissance, and some other such applications, so that a survey of the area of interest can be made collectively, a set of mobile nodes is deployed. Keeping the network nodes connected is vital for WSNs to be effective. The provision of connectivity can be made at the time of startup and can be maintained by carefully coordinating the nodes when they move. However, if a node suddenly fails, the network could be partitioned to cause communication problems. Recently, several methods that use the relocation of nodes for connectivity restoration have been proposed. However, these methods have the tendency to not consider the potential coverage loss in some locations. This paper addresses the concerns of both connectivity and coverage in an integrated way so that this gap can be filled. A novel algorithm for simultaneous-node repositioning is introduced. In this approach, each neighbour of the failed node, one by one, moves in for a certain amount of time to take the place of the failed node, after which it returns to its original location in the network. The effectiveness of this algorithm has been verified by the simulation results

    IEEE 802.15.4e: a Survey

    Several studies have highlighted that the IEEE 802.15.4 standard presents a number of limitations such as low reliability, unbounded packet delays and no protection against interference/fading, that prevent its adoption in applications with stringent requirements in terms of reliability and latency. Recently, the IEEE has released the 802.15.4e amendment that introduces a number of enhancements/modifications to the MAC layer of the original standard in order to overcome such limitations. In this paper we provide a clear and structured overview of all the new 802.15.4e mechanisms. After a general introduction to the 802.15.4e standard, we describe the details of the main 802.15.4e MAC behavior modes, namely Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH), Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-channel Extension (DSME), and Low Latency Deterministic Network (LLDN). For each of them, we provide a detailed description and highlight the main features and possible application domains. Also, we survey the current literature and summarize open research issues

    Réseaux ad hoc : système d'adressage et méthodes d'accessibilité aux données

    RÉSUMÉ Au cours de la dernière décennie, un nouveau type de réseaux sans fil a suscité un grand intérêt dans la communauté scientifique: ce sont les réseaux ad hoc. Ils existent sous la variante des réseaux mobiles ad hoc (MANET), et des réseaux de capteurs sans fil (RCSF). Les réseaux mobiles ad hoc sont constitués de noeuds mobiles qui communiquent les uns avec les autres sans l‘aide d‘une d'infrastructure centralisée. Les noeuds se déplacent librement et sont soumis à des déconnexions fréquentes en raison de l'instabilité des liens. Cela a pour conséquence de diminuer l'accessibilité aux données, et de modifier la façon dont les données sont partagées dans le réseau. Comparable aux réseaux MANET, un RCSF est composé d'un ensemble d'unités de traitements embarquées, appelées capteurs, communiquant via des liens sans fil et dont la fonction principale est la collecte de paramètres relatifs à l'environnement qui les entoure, telles que la température, la pression, ou la présence d'objets. Les RCSF diffèrent des MANET de par le déploiement à grande échelle des noeuds, et trouvent leur application dans diverses activités de la société, tels les processus industriels, les applications militaires de surveillance, l'observation et le suivi d'habitat, etc. Lorsqu‘un grand nombre de capteurs sont déployés avec des dispositifs d'actionnement appelés acteurs, le RCSF devient un réseau de capteurs et d‘acteurs sans fil (RCASF). Dans une telle situation, les capteurs collaborent pour la détection des phénomènes physiques et rapportent les données afférentes aux acteurs qui les traitent et initient les actions appropriées. De nombreux travaux dans les RCSF supposent l'existence d'adresses et d'infrastructures de routage pour valider leurs propositions. Cependant, l‘allocation d‘adresses et le routage des données liées aux événements détectés dans ces réseaux restent des défis entiers, en particulier à cause du nombre élevé de capteurs et des ressources limitées dont ils disposent. Dans cette thèse, nous abordons le problème de l'accessibilité aux données dans les MANET, et les mécanismes d‘adressage et de routage dans les RCSF de grande taille.----------ABSTRACT During the last decade, a new type of wireless networks has stirred up great interest within the scientific community: there are ad hoc networks. They exist as mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), and wireless sensor (WSN). The mobile ad hoc networks consist of mobile nodes that communicate with each other without using a centralized infrastructure. The nodes move freely and are subject to frequent disconnections due to links instability. This has the effect of reducing data accessibility, and change the way data are shared across the network. Similar MANET networks, a WSN consists of a set of embedded processing units called sensors that communicate with each other via wireless links. Their main function is the collection of parameters relating to the environment around them, such as temperature, pressure, motion, video, etc. WSNs differ from the MANETs due to the large scale deployment of nodes, and are expected to have many applications in various fields, such as industrial processes, military surveillance, observation and monitoring of habitat, etc. When a large number of sensors which are resource-impoverished nodes are deployed with powerful actuation devices, the WSN becomes a Wireless Sensor and Actor Network (WSAN). In such a situation, the collaborative operation of sensors enables the distributed sensing of a physical phenomenon, while actors collect and process sensor data to perform appropriate action. Numerous works in WSN assumes the existence of addresses and routing infrastructure to validate their proposals. However, assigning addresses and delivering detected events remains highly challenging, specifically due to the sheer number of nodes. In this thesis, we address the problem of data accessibility in MANET, and that of addressing and routing in large scale WSN. This involves techniques such as data caching and replication to prevent the deterioration of data accessibility. The addressing system in WSN includes a distributed address allocation scheme and a routing infrastructure for both actors and sensors. Moreover, with the birth of the multimedia sensors, the traffic may be mixed with time sensitive packets and reliability-demanding packets. For that purpose, we also address the problem of providing quality of service (QoS) in the routing infrastructure for WSN

    Self-Recovering Sensor-Actor Networks

    Wireless sensor-actor networks are a recent development of wireless networks where both ordinary sensor nodes and more sophisticated and powerful nodes, called actors, are present. In this paper we formalize a recently introduced algorithm that recovers failed actor communication links via the existing sensor infrastructure. We prove via refinement that the recovery is terminating in a finite number of steps and is distributed, thus self-performed by the actors. Most importantly, we prove that the recovery can be done at different levels, via different types of links, such as direct actor links or indirect links between the actors, in the latter case reusing the wireless infrastructure of sensors. This leads to identifying coordination classes, e.g., for delegating the most security sensitive coordination to the direct actor-actor coordination links, the least real-time constrained coordination to indirect links, and the safety critical coordination to both direct actor links and indirect sensor paths between actors. Our formalization is done using the theorem prover in the RODIN platform

    Design, analysis and implementation of a spatial-temporal, adaptive and multi-replication data centric storage framework for wireless sensor and actor networks

    This PhD Thesis presents a novel framework for Data-Centric Storage(DCS) in a Wireless Sensor and Actor Network(WSAN) that enables the use of a multiple set of data replication nodes, which also change over the time. This allows reducing the average network traffic and energy consumption by adapting the number of replicas to applications’ traffic, while balancing energy burdens by varying their location. To that end we propose and validate a simple model to determine the optimal number of replicas, in terms of minimizing average traffic/energy consumption, from the measured applications’ production and consumption traffic. Simple mechanisms are proposed to decide when the current set of replication nodes should be changed, to enable new applications and sensor nodes to efficiently bootstrap into a working sensor network, to recover from failing nodes, and to adapt to changing conditions. Extensive simulations demonstrate that our approach can extend a sensor network’s lifetime by at least a 60%, and up to a factor of 10x depending on the lifetime criterion being considered. Furthermore, we have implemented our framework in a real testbed with 20 motes that validates in a small scenario those results obtained via simulation for large WSANs. Finally, we present a heuristic that adapts our framework to scenarios with spatially heterogeneous consumption and/or production traffic distributions providing an effective reduction in the overall traffic, as well as reducing the number of nodes that die over the time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Esta Tesis se enmarca en el campo de la redes de sensores y actuadores inalámbricas. Para este tipo de redes existe un sistema de almacenamiento y entrega de información totalmente distribuido denominado Data-Centric Storage (DCS). En dicho sistema se selecciona un nodo en la red para almacenar toda la información relativa a una aplicación o tipo de evento. Dicha elección se realiza mediante el uso de una función de hash que, usando como argumento el propio nombre de la aplicación (o tipo de evento), devuelve el identificador (e.g. coordenadas geográficas, identificador de nodo, etc) del nodo responsable de almacenar toda la información que deesa aplicación (o tipo de evento). El uso de un único nodo para almacenar todos los datos de un mismo tipo generados en la red tiende a generar un punto de saturación en la red (especialmente en términos energéticos) ya que una gran cantidad de tráfico es encaminada hacia un único punto. De hecho, no sólo el nodo seleccionado como nodo de almacenamiento, sino también todos aquellos que le rodean, experimentan un mayor gasto de recursos ya que son los encargados de rutar los mensajes hacia el nodo de almacenamiento. Este problema ha dado lugar a sistemas que utilizan multiples réplicas para aliviar la generacióon de un punto de congestión y elevado consumo energético en la red. Situando varios puntos de almacenamiento para un tipo de evento dado, es posible aliviar la congestión de un único punto. Sin embargo la generación de nuevas réplicas tiene un coste asociado, y por tanto existe un número de réplicas óptimo que minimiza el tráfico total en la red, que a su vez tiene un impacto directo en la reducción del consumo energético y la extensión del tiempo de vida de la red. En esta Tesis se proponen dos esquemas de replicación para redes de sensores que usan DCS como sistema de almacenamiento distribuido. Para ambos casos se han desarrollado modelos matemáticos que permiten conocer el número óptimo de réplicas que deben ser utilizadas (para minimizar el tráfico total en la red) en función de la intensidad de producción y consumo de un tipo de evento. El primer mecanismo, denominado Quadratic Adaptive Replication (QAR), propone el uso de una estructura mallada para la colocación de las réplicas. QAR mejora trabajos previos que ya proponían un esquema de replicación en grid, ya que es más adaptativo a las condiciones de tráfico en la red. El segundo mecanismo simplemente genera localizaciones aleatorias donde situar las replicas. Sorprendentemente, esta Tesis demuestra que es el mejor sistema de replicación, incluso por delante de QAR, ya que es el más adaptativo a las condiciones de tráfico. Además, tiene la gran ventaja de que es extremadamente simple y puede aplicarse en redes irregulares o que utlizan diferentes protocolos de enrutamiento. Los sistemas de replicación alivian el problema del punto único de congestión, pero no lo solucionan completamente, ya que siguen apareciendo puntos de congestión menores, tantos como réplicas sean usadas. Por tanto, la red sigue presentando una gran desigualdad en el consumo energético, ya que aquellos puntos seleccionados como réplicas (y sus vecinos) usan una mayor energía para desarrollar su actividad. Frente a este problema, se propone como solución el cambio de las réplicas a lo largo del tiempo. Esecialmente, se limita el tiempo que un nodo puede permanecer desempeñando el papel de réplica, de tal forma que, una vez pasado ese tiempo, otro nodo tomará esa responsabilidad. Aplicando esta propuesta se consigue un equilibrio en el consumo energético de los nodos de la red, lo que tiene un gran impacto en la extensión del tiempo de vida de la red. En los experimentos realizados, dicha extensión tiene un valor m´ınimo de un 60%, llegándose a extender el tiempo de la vida hasta 10 veces bajo ciertas definiciones de tiempo de vida de la red. La principal contribución de esta Tesis es la presentación de un marco de trabajo adaptativo tanto espacial como temporalmente que, basado en un modelo teórico, indica cuál es el número óptimo de replicas que deben ser usadas en un determinado periodo. En esta Tesis se propone un protocolo completo que cubre todas las funcionalidades para que dicho sistema pueda ser implementado y desplegado en el mundo real. Para demostrar que el sistema propuesto puede ser implementado en ndoos de sensores comerciales, esta Tesis presenta la implementación realizada en 20 motas del fabricante Jennic. Asimismo, se ha empleado un pequeño test de pruebas para confirmar la validez de los modelos matemáticos para la obtención del número óptimo de réplicas, así como para demostrar que el cambio de las réplicas a lo largo del tiempo genera una mejor distribución del consumo energético en la red
