Sensor And Method For Detecting A Superstrate

    Get PDF
Method and apparatus are provided for determining a superstrate on or near a sensor, e.g., for detecting the presence of an ice superstrate on an airplane wing or a road. In one preferred embodiment, multiple measurement cells are disposed along a transmission line. While the present invention is operable with different types of transmission lines, construction details for a presently preferred coplanar waveguide and a microstrip waveguide are disclosed. A computer simulation is provided as part of the invention for predicting results of a simulated superstrate detector system. The measurement cells may be physically partitioned, nonphysically partitioned with software or firmware, or include a combination of different types of partitions. In one embodiment, a plurality of transmission lines are utilized wherein each transmission line includes a plurality of measurement cells. The plurality of transmission lines may be multiplexed with the signal from each transmission line being applied to the same phase detector. In one embodiment, an inverse problem method is applied to determine the superstrate dielectric for a transmission line with multiple measurement cells

Integration of Antennas and Solar cells for Low Power Wireless Systems

This thesis reports on design methods for enhanced integration of low-profile antennas for short-range wireless communications with solar voltaic systems. The need to transform to more sustainable energy sources arises from the excessive production of harmful carbon emissions from fossil fuels. The Internet of Things and the proliferation of battery powered devices makes energy harvesting from the environment more desirable in order to reduce dependency on the power grid and running costs. While photovoltaic powering is opportune due to immense levels of available solar power, the separate area requirements for the antenna and the photovoltaic surfaces presents an opportunity to significantly minimize the unit volume and to enable portable deployment. The focus is on issues of integrating antennas and transmission lines above crystalline silicon solar cells, in particular, the relative orientations are complicated by a-symmetric lattice of the solar cell. A solution to minimise orientation sensitivity was provided and utilised to successfully isolate a microstrip transmission line from the solar lattice, thereby allowing four antenna configurations to be demonstrated. Further work on crystalline solar cells demonstrated their use alongside circularly polarised antennas for aerial vehicles. Wireless energy harvesting over a wide frequency range was demonstrated with an a-Si solar Vivaldi antenna. A dye-sensitised solar dipole antenna was developed for low power indoor applications. The approaches established the engineering capacity to reduce the device size and weight through integration of the radio and the solar cell technologies. In addition, the use of different solar cell technologies demonstrated the importance of selecting the cell type most suited to the intended application

A Concept for an STJ-based Spectrograph

We describe a multi-order spectrograph concept suitable for 8m-class telescopes, using the intrinsic spectral resolution of Superconducting Tunneling Junction detectors to sort the spectral orders. The spectrograph works at low orders, 1-5 or 1-6, and provides spectral coverage with a resolving power of R~8000 from the atmospheric cutoff at 320 nm to the long wavelength end of the infrared H or K band at 1800 nm or 2400 nm. We calculate that the spectrograph would provide substantial throughput and wavelength coverage, together with high time resolution and sufficient dynamic range. The concept uses currently available technology, or technologies with short development horizons, restricting the spatial sampling to two linear arrays; however an upgrade path to provide more spatial sampling is identified. All of the other challenging aspects of the concept - the cryogenics, thermal baffling and magnetic field biasing - are identified as being feasible.Comment: Accepted in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 12 pages with 10 figure

The application of remote sensing techniques: Technical and methodological issues

    Get PDF
Capabilities and limitations of modern imaging electromagnetic sensor systems are outlined, and the products of such systems are compared with those of the traditional aerial photographic system. Focus is given to the interface between the rapidly developing remote sensing technology and the information needs of operational agencies, and communication gaps are shown to retard early adoption of the technology by these agencies. An assessment is made of the current status of imaging remote sensors and their potential for the future. Public sources of remote sensor data and several cost comparisons are included
