Biologically Inspired Intelligence with Applications on Robot Navigation
Biologically inspired intelligence technique, an important embranchment of series on computational intelligence, plays a crucial role for robotics. The autonomous robot and vehicle industry has had an immense impact on our economy and society and this trend will continue with biologically inspired neural network techniques. In this chapter, multiple robots cooperate to achieve a common coverage goal efficiently, which can improve the work capacity, share the coverage tasks, and reduce the completion time by a biologically inspired intelligence technique, is addressed. In many real-world applications, the coverage task has to be completed without any prior knowledge of the environment. In this chapter, a neural dynamics approach is proposed for complete area coverage by multiple robots. A bio-inspired neural network is designed to model the dynamic environment and to guide a team of robots for the coverage task. The dynamics of each neuron in the topologically organized neural network is characterized by a shunting neural equation. Each mobile robot treats the other robots as moving obstacles. Each robot path is autonomously generated from the dynamic activity landscape of the neural network and the previous robot position. The proposed model algorithm is computationally simple. Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud
Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conwayâs life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MRâs applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithmsâ performance on Amazonâs Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations. Utility of construction automation and robotics in South Africa
The construction industry demands active construction organisation, efficient construction processes and innovative construction techniques to effectively compete under increasing market competition and technological advancements in the twenty first century. The problems associated with construction, such as poor quality and slow productivity, labour shortages, occupational health and safety, and inferior working conditions, have opened the possibility of more revolutionary solutions within the industry. One such solution espoused as having tremendous potential to improve construction productivity whilst alleviating the problems associated with construction is Construction Automation and Robotics. Automation and robotics technologies encompass a wide range of innovative technologies using technologically advanced machinery to improve the speed and efficiency of a given process. The aim of this study is to analyse the extent of utility of construction automation and robotics in the South African construction industry. The research adopted the quantitative methodology and online survey to collect data. A detailed quantitative (statistical) data analysis was performed, using web-based software âQuestionPro,â including data analysis for investigating possible relationships between variables. Through this study it has been established that one of the prospective solutions to the problems associated with construction is in the implementation and utility of innovative technologies in construction such as automation and robotics. Moreover, the research found that automation and robotics in South Africa is at an interesting point whereby organisations are taking strides in accepting and implementing the technologies. It is envisaged that the utility of construction automation and robotics would improve the industry in terms of productivity, health and safety and quality

RFID Technology in Intelligent Tracking Systems in Construction Waste Logistics Using Optimisation Techniques
Construction waste disposal is an urgent issue
for protecting our environment. This paper proposes a
waste management system and illustrates the work
process using plasterboard waste as an example, which
creates a hazardous gas when land filled with household
waste, and for which the recycling rate is less than 10%
in the UK. The proposed system integrates RFID
technology, Rule-Based Reasoning, Ant Colony
optimization and knowledge technology for auditing
and tracking plasterboard waste, guiding the operation
staff, arranging vehicles, schedule planning, and also
provides evidence to verify its disposal. It h relies on
RFID equipment for collecting logistical data and uses
digital imaging equipment to give further evidence; the
reasoning core in the third layer is responsible for
generating schedules and route plans and guidance, and
the last layer delivers the result to inform users. The
paper firstly introduces the current plasterboard
disposal situation and addresses the logistical problem
that is now the main barrier to a higher recycling rate,
followed by discussion of the proposed system in terms
of both system level structure and process structure.
And finally, an example scenario will be given to
illustrate the systemâs utilization
