    Coordination approaches and systems - part I : a strategic perspective

    This is the first part of a two-part paper presenting a fundamental review and summary of research of design coordination and cooperation technologies. The theme of this review is aimed at the research conducted within the decision management aspect of design coordination. The focus is therefore on the strategies involved in making decisions and how these strategies are used to satisfy design requirements. The paper reviews research within collaborative and coordinated design, project and workflow management, and, task and organization models. The research reviewed has attempted to identify fundamental coordination mechanisms from different domains, however it is concluded that domain independent mechanisms need to be augmented with domain specific mechanisms to facilitate coordination.     Stratified Grammar Systems with Simple and Dynamically Organized Strata

    Stratified grammar systems have been introduced as a grammatical model of M. Minsky hypothesis concerning how the mind works. This grammatical model is a restricted model since it is assumed that the strata of the mind are ordered in a given linear ordering. In this paper, we consider stratified grammar systems with strata organized dynamically, according to the current sentential form to be written, to meet Minsky hypothesis that the strata of the mind are organized dynamically according to the current task to be processed. We study the generative power of these systems, which we shall call dynamic stratified grammar systems, and we show that they generate the family of matrix grammars. Also, we consider simple systems by limiting the number of components comprising the stratum to be at most two components with only one rule each. Then, we show that every dynamic stratified grammar system can be represented by an equivalent simple one which demonstrates the ideas of generating complicated behaviors through more or less coordinated activities of entities with simpler behaviors

    Lost in translation: Toward a formal model of multilevel, multiscale medicine

    For a broad spectrum of low level cognitive regulatory and other biological phenomena, isolation from signal crosstalk between them requires more metabolic free energy than permitting correlation. This allows an evolutionary exaptation leading to dynamic global broadcasts of interacting physiological processes at multiple scales. The argument is similar to the well-studied exaptation of noise to trigger stochastic resonance amplification in physiological subsystems. Not only is the living state characterized by cognition at every scale and level of organization, but by multiple, shifting, tunable, cooperative larger scale broadcasts that link selected subsets of functional modules to address problems. This multilevel dynamical viewpoint has implications for initiatives in translational medicine that have followed the implosive collapse of pharmaceutical industry 'magic bullet' research. In short, failure to respond to the inherently multilevel, multiscale nature of human pathophysiology will doom translational medicine to a similar implosion

    Integrity Constraints in Trust Management

    We introduce the use, monitoring, and enforcement of integrity constraints in trust management-style authorization systems. We consider what portions of the policy state must be monitored to detect violations of integrity constraints. Then we address the fact that not all participants in a trust management system can be trusted to assist in such monitoring, and show how many integrity constraints can be monitored in a conservative manner so that trusted participants detect and report if the system enters a policy state from which evolution in unmonitored portions of the policy could lead to a constraint violation.Comment: An extended abstract appears in the proc. of the 10th ACM Symp. on Access Control Models and Technologies (SACMAT). 200

    Filtered Networks of Evolutionary Processors

Most well known numeric models are Neural Networks that are able to approximate any function or classify any pattern set provided numeric information is injected into the net. Neural Nets usually have a supervised or unsupervised learning stage in order to perform desired response. Concerning symbolic information new research area has been developed, inspired by George Paun, called Membrane Systems. A step forward, in a similar Neural Network architecture, was done to obtain Networks of Evolutionary Processors (NEP). A NEP is a set of processors connected by a graph, each processor only deals with symbolic information using rules. In short, objects in processors can evolve and pass through processors until a stable configuration is reach. This paper just shows some ideas about these two models

    A new tool for the performance analysis of massively parallel computer systems

    We present a new tool, GPA, that can generate key performance measures for very large systems. Based on solving systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), this method of performance analysis is far more scalable than stochastic simulation. The GPA tool is the first to produce higher moment analysis from differential equation approximation, which is essential, in many cases, to obtain an accurate performance prediction. We identify so-called switch points as the source of error in the ODE approximation. We investigate the switch point behaviour in several large models and observe that as the scale of the model is increased, in general the ODE performance prediction improves in accuracy. In the case of the variance measure, we are able to justify theoretically that in the limit of model scale, the ODE approximation can be expected to tend to the actual variance of the model
