In parallel with the vast medical research on clinical treatment of COVID-19, an important action to have the disease completely under control is to carefully monitor the patients. What the detection of COVID-19 relies on most is the viral tests, however, the study of X-rays is helpful due to the ease of availability. There are various studies that employ Deep Learning (DL) paradigms, aiming at reinforcing the radiography-based recognition of lung infection by COVID-19. In this regard, we make a comparison of the noteworthy approaches devoted to the binary classification of infected images by using DL techniques, then we also propose a variant of a convolutional neural network (CNN) with optimized parameters, which performs very well on a recent dataset of COVID-19. The proposed model’s effectiveness is demonstrated to be of considerable importance due to its uncomplicated design, in contrast to other presented models. In our approach, we randomly put several images of the utilized dataset aside as a hold out set; the model detects most of the COVID-19 X-rays correctly, with an excellent overall accuracy of 99.8%. In addition, the significance of the results obtained by testing different datasets of diverse characteristics (which, more specifically, are not used in the training process) demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of an accuracy up to 93%

Pneumonia is a type of lung disease that can be detected using X-ray images. The analysis of chest X-ray images is an active research area in medical image analysis and computer-aided radiology. This research aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of radiologists' work by providing a technique for identifying and categorizing diseases. More attention should be given to applying machine learning approaches to develop a robust chest X-ray image classification method. The typical method for detecting Pneumonia is through chest X-ray images, but analyzing these images can be complex and requires the expertise of a radiographer. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of detecting the disease using chest X-ray images as datasets and a Support Vector Machine combined with a Naive Bayesian classifier, with PCA and GA as feature selection methods. The selected features are essential for training many classifiers. The proposed system achieved an accuracy of 92.26%, using 91% of the principal component. The study's result suggests that using PCA and GA for feature selection in chest X-ray image classification can achieve a good accuracy of 97.44%. Further research is needed to explore the use of other data mining models and care components to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the system

In the current era, big data is growing exponentially due to advancements in smart devices. Data scientists apply varied learning-based techniques to identify the underlying patterns in the big medical data to address various health-related issues. In this context, automated disease detection has now become a central concern in medical science due to rapid population growth. It reduces the mortality rate by diagnosing the disease correctly and early enough. The novel virus disease COVID-19 has spread all over the world and is affecting millions of people. Many countries are facing a shortage of test kits, vaccines, and other resources due to substantial growth in COVID-19 cases. In order to accelerate the testing process, scientists around the world have sought to create revolutionary novel alternative methods for the detection of the deadly virus. In this paper, we have proposed a hybrid deep learning model based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) for diagnosing the virus from chest X-rays (CXRs). In the proposed model, CNN is used to extract features, and GRU is used as a classifier. The model has been trained on 424 CXRs images with 3 (COIVD-19, Pneumonia, and Normal) classes. The proposed model achieved encouraging results of 0.96, 0.96, and 0.95 in terms of precision, recall, and f1-score, respectively. These findings indicate how deep learning can significantly contribute to the early detection of COVID-19 patients using X-ray scans. Such indications can pave the ways to mitigate the deadly disease. We believe that this model can be an effective tool for medical practitioners for the early diagnosis of coronavirus from CXRs

This is an accepted manuscript of an article published by Elsevier in Journal of Systems Architecture on 30/06/2020, available online: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.sysarc.2020.101830 The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.Global Health sometimes faces pandemics as are currently facing COVID-19 disease. The spreading and infection factors of this disease are very high. A huge number of people from most of the countries are infected within six months from its first report of appearance and it keeps spreading. The required systems are not ready up to some stages for any pandemic; therefore, mitigation with existing capacity becomes necessary. On the other hand, modern-era largely depends on Artificial Intelligence(AI) including Data Science; and Deep Learning(DL) is one of the current flag-bearer of these techniques. It could use to mitigate COVID-19 like pandemics in terms of stop spread, diagnosis of the disease, drug & vaccine discovery, treatment, patient care, and many more. But this DL requires large datasets as well as powerful computing resources. A shortage of reliable datasets of a running pandemic is a common phenomenon. So, Deep Transfer Learning(DTL) would be effective as it learns from one task and could work on another task. In addition, Edge Devices(ED) such as IoT, Webcam, Drone, Intelligent Medical Equipment, Robot, etc. are very useful in a pandemic situation. These types of equipment make the infrastructures sophisticated and automated which helps to cope with an outbreak. But these are equipped with low computing resources, so, applying DL is also a bit challenging; therefore, DTL also would be effective there. This article scholarly studies the potentiality and challenges of these issues. It has described relevant technical backgrounds and reviews of the related recent state-of-the-art. This article also draws a pipeline of DTL over Edge Computing as a future scope to assist the mitigation of any pandemic

In December 2019, a novel virus called COVID-19 had caused an enormous number of causalities to date. The battle with the novel Coronavirus is baffling and horrifying after the Spanish Flu 2019. While the front-line doctors and medical researchers have made significant progress in controlling the spread of the highly contiguous virus, technology has also proved its significance in the battle. Moreover, Artificial Intelligence has been adopted in many medical applications to diagnose many diseases, even baffling experienced doctors. Therefore, this survey paper explores the methodologies proposed that can aid doctors and researchers in early and inexpensive methods of diagnosis of the disease. Most developing countries have difficulties carrying out tests using the conventional manner, but a significant way can be adopted with Machine and Deep Learning. On the other hand, the access to different types of medical images has motivated the researchers. As a result, a mammoth number of techniques are proposed. This paper first details the background knowledge of the conventional methods in the Artificial Intelligence domain. Following that, we gather the commonly used datasets and their use cases to date. In addition, we also show the percentage of researchers adopting Machine Learning over Deep Learning. Thus we provide a thorough analysis of this scenario. Lastly, in the research challenges, we elaborate on the problems faced in COVID-19 research, and we address the issues with our understanding to build a bright and healthy environment.Comment: 63 pages, 3 tables, 17 figure

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread all over the world for three years, but medical facilities in many areas still aren't adequate. There is a need for rapid COVID-19 diagnosis to identify high-risk patients and maximize the use of limited medical resources. Motivated by this fact, we proposed the deep learning framework MEDNC for automatic prediction and diagnosis of COVID-19 using computed tomography (CT) images. Our model was trained using two publicly available sets of COVID-19 data. And it was built with the inspiration of transfer learning. Results indicated that the MEDNC greatly enhanced the detection of COVID-19 infections, reaching an accuracy of 98.79% and 99.82% respectively. We tested MEDNC on a brain tumor and a blood cell dataset to show that our model applies to a wide range of problems. The outcomes demonstrated that our proposed models attained an accuracy of 99.39% and 99.28%, respectively. This COVID-19 recognition tool could help optimize healthcare resources and reduce clinicians' workload when screening for the virus
