    Intelligent flight control systems

    The capabilities of flight control systems can be enhanced by designing them to emulate functions of natural intelligence. Intelligent control functions fall in three categories. Declarative actions involve decision-making, providing models for system monitoring, goal planning, and system/scenario identification. Procedural actions concern skilled behavior and have parallels in guidance, navigation, and adaptation. Reflexive actions are spontaneous, inner-loop responses for control and estimation. Intelligent flight control systems learn knowledge of the aircraft and its mission and adapt to changes in the flight environment. Cognitive models form an efficient basis for integrating 'outer-loop/inner-loop' control functions and for developing robust parallel-processing algorithms

The year end review was held at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, June 18-19, 1992. The Joint University Program is a coordinated set of three grants sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration and NASA Langley Research Center, one each with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (NGL-22-009-640), Ohio University (NGR-36-009-017), and Princeton University (NGL-31-001-252). Completed works, status reports, and annotated bibliographies are presented for research topics, which include navigation, guidance and control theory and practice, intelligent flight control, flight dynamics, human factors, and air traffic control processes.     Autonomous Navigation in (the Animal and) the Machine

    Understanding the principles underlying autonomous navigation might be the most enticing quest the computational neuroscientist can undertake. Autonomous operation, also known as voluntary behavior, is the result of higher cognitive mechanisms and what is known as executive function in psychology. A rudimentary knowledge of the brain can explain where and to a certain degree how parts of a computation are expressed. However, achieving a satisfactory understanding of the neural computation involved in voluntary behavior is beyond today’s neuroscience. In contrast with the study of the brain, with a comprehensive body of theory for trying to understand system with unmatched complexity, the field of AI is to a larger extent guided by examples of achievements. Although the two sciences differ in methods, theoretical foundation, scientific vigour, and direct applicability, the intersection between the two may be a viable approach toward understanding autonomy. This project is an example of how both fields may benefit from such a venture. The findings presented in this thesis may be interesting for behavioral neuroscience, exploring how operant functions can be combined to form voluntary behavior. The presented theory can also be considered as documentation of a successful implementation of autonomous navigation in Euclidean space. Findings are grouped into three parts, as expressed in this thesis. First, pertinent back- ground theory is presented in Part I – collecting key findings from psychology and from AI relating to autonomous navigation. Part II presents a theoretical contribution to RL theory developed during the design and implementation of the emulator for navigational autonomy, before experimental findings from a selection of published papers are attached as Part III. Note how this thesis emphasizes the understanding of volition and autonomous navigation rather than accomplishments by the agent, reflecting the aim of this project – to understand the basic principles of autonomous navigation to a sufficient degree to be able to recreate its effect by first principles

    From locomotion to cognition: Bridging the gap between reactive and cognitive behavior in a quadruped robot

    The cognitivistic paradigm, which states that cognition is a result of computation with symbols that represent the world, has been challenged by many. The opponents have primarily criticized the detachment from direct interaction with the world and pointed to some fundamental problems (for instance the symbol grounding problem). Instead, they emphasized the constitutive role of embodied interaction with the environment. This has motivated the advancement of synthetic methodologies: the phenomenon of interest (cognition) can be studied by building and investigating whole brain-body-environment systems. Our work is centered around a compliant quadruped robot equipped with a multimodal sensory set. In a series of case studies, we investigate the structure of the sensorimotor space that the application of different actions in different environments by the robot brings about. Then, we study how the agent can autonomously abstract the regularities that are induced by the different conditions and use them to improve its behavior. The agent is engaged in path integration, terrain discrimination and gait adaptation, and moving target following tasks. The nature of the tasks forces the robot to leave the ``here-and-now'' time scale of simple reactive stimulus-response behaviors and to learn from its experience, thus creating a ``minimally cognitive'' setting. Solutions to these problems are developed by the agent in a bottom-up fashion. The complete scenarios are then used to illuminate the concepts that are believed to lie at the basis of cognition: sensorimotor contingencies, body schema, and forward internal models. Finally, we discuss how the presented solutions are relevant for applications in robotics, in particular in the area of autonomous model acquisition and adaptation, and, in mobile robots, in dead reckoning and traversability detection

    Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud

    Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations. Our algorithms can serve as prototypes in the development of novel MR simulation algorithms for large-scale lattice-based a-life models.https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/scs_books/1014/thumbnail.jp
